According to The Hollywood Reporter, BET has given a straight-to-series order to In Contempt, a legal drama starring Survivor’s Remorse alum Erica Ash.
From Terri Kopp (Law & Order), In Contempt follows attorney Gwen Sullivan (Ash), whose passion for her job and personal investment in her clients makes her the best public defender in her district. The series will feature the likes of Megan Hutchings (Reign) as Gwen’s friend and fellow public defender Tracy; Christian Keyes (Let’s Stay Together) as Charlie, Gwen’s boss and friend with benefits; Richard Lawson (Grey’s Anatomy) as Gwen’s father Earl; and Mouna Traore (Book of Negroes) as Vanessa, a rookie attorney on the road to becoming more socially conscious.
BET has ramped up its scripted presence in recent months as a result of Viacom’s recent restructuring, which places it as one of the corporation’s primary scripted hubs. The network has acquired VH1 dramas Hit the Floor and The Breaks, will be the beneficiary of Viacom’s recent exclusivity deal with Tyler Perry, and has the likes of Tales, Rebel, The Quad, and outgoing Being Mary Jane still on its roster.
In addition to her role on the recently cancelled Starz comedy, Ash has appeared on Real Husbands of Hollywood, Shades of Blue, and The Big Gay Sketch Show.
In Contempt is currently in production for a 2018 premiere.
