It’s been a busy time for news in and around Shondaland, as Scandal is officially heading into its final season, The Catch was cancelled, and For the People landed a series order. On top of all this comes word that ABC has ordered a currently untitled Grey’s Anatomy spinoff that will focus on firefighters.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s‘ signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey.
The spinoff, whose pilot will air as an episode of the venerable medical drama next season, would be the second time Grey’s Anatomy has birthed another drama. The first time was Private Practice, a more direct spinoff that followed Kate Walsh’s Addison Montgomery from Seattle Grace to Los Angeles where she launched her own practice.
There’s no word yet on what connection the new Grey’s spinoff would have to the mother ship or if any characters from the main show would move to the spinoff.

Would you watch a Grey’s spinoff centering on firefighters? Do you think ABC should directly spin Grey’s off in the way they did with Private Practice? Should someone from the main show go to the new spinoff to help ratings?
