Inspired by her attraction to Mike, as well as a major creative crisis, Abby decided to write a romance novel set in the world of baseball. Not only would she be tapping into a major literary market by moving from self-help to romance, she would be using a unique setting for that world, something that would help her novel stand out from a sea of ripped bodices and long-haired lotharios. Helping her writing was her decision to act on the sexual tension with Mike, as the taboo nature of their relationship fed into the romance novel sweet spot while the two deciding to wait to have sex forced Abby to channel her sexual energy through her writing. It was a pretty ideal situation for a romance writer, having a scenario worthy of a romance novel playing out in your personal life, but what happens after Abby finishes the novel and is left with the reality of her relationship with Mike?
On the season finale of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Abby has completed her first romance novel, which is cause for celebration. Prior to entering the world of romance, she didn’t know how she would be able to support herself or what direction her career was going to go without self-help to fall back on, so the fact that she was able to remake her brand for the second time is impressive. But once she turns in her final draft, Abby doesn’t have the fantasy world to continue fueling her relationship with Mike; what she’s left with is a man somewhere between married and divorce, whose status she refuses to press him on. Abby has no idea how far along Mike’s divorce is, what the custody arrangement he has with his wife entails, or anything specific pointing toward legal, finalized divorce being in the foreseeable future. For someone who’s been divorced herself, Abby knows how long and complicated the process can be, how draining it is to relive your marriage’s mistakes and how depressing it is to monetize the life you lived with someone. It’s a lot to deal with emotionally and it’s something that doesn’t necessarily make someone the best partner, so if Abby chooses to stay with Mike regardless of the status of his divorce, she has to be ready for things to get a lot worse before they even have the chance of getting better.
Elsewhere on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Barbara re-enters a crowded job market after quitting SheShe, while Phoebe and JD’s getaway to Gemma’s lodge turns into something neither of them expected.
The season finale of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce airs Wednesday at 10:00 on Bravo.
Will Abby stay with Mike even though he’s not technically divorced? What will Barbara do next now that she’s been burned by SheShe? Can Phoebe and JD’s marriage survive her friendship with Gemma?
