CBS has started handing out series orders for the 2016-2017 TV season.
What’s coming?
There’s a MacGyver reboot starring Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) with George Eads (CSI). The show follows a 20-something MacGyver as he creates a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening. The trades are reporting that Till and Eads are the only cast from the original pilot staying; as such, we probably won’t see this one until midseason. Interesting trivia: In 2004, The WB had a Young MacGyver pilot of their own, starring a young Jared Padalecki.
Training Day is also from a known property: the movie of the same name. The TV project is describes as a crime thriller that begins 15 years after the events of the feature film left, about an idealistic young police officer (Justin Cornwell) who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous detective (Bill Paxton). Drew Van Acker, Katrina Law, Lex Scott Davis, and Julie Benz also star.
Bull should be a slam dunk for CBS, as it stars NCIS favorite Michael Weatherly. The drama is inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw as the founder of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time. Brilliant, brash and charming, Dr. Jason Bull is the ultimate puppet master as he combines psychology, human intuition and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses and the accused tick. Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr, Chris Jackson, Jaime Lee Kirchner, and Annabelle Attanasio also star.
Pure Genius was at one time in development called Bunker Hill, and it comes from Executive Producer Jason Katims (Parenthood). Its pickup makes us worry for Code Black’s future. In any event, the show follows a young Silicon Valley tech titan (Augustus Prew) who enlists a veteran surgeon with a controversial past in starting a hospital with a cutting edge, “new school” approach to medicine. Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, Brenda Song, Reshma Shetty, Ward Horton, Aaron Jennings, and Odette Annable star.
On the comedy front, Man With A Plan once had the meta title I’m Not Your Friend and stars one of our old Friends, Matt LeBlanc. LeBlanc stars as a contractor whose wife goes back to work starts spending more time with his kids and discovers the truth every parent eventually realizes: his little angels are maniacs. Jessica Chaffin, Matt Cook, Grace Kaufman, Hala Finley, and Matthew McCann also star.
Community’s Joel McHale stars in The Great Indoors as an adventure reporter who must adapt to the times when he becomes the boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of the magazine. The show also stars Stephen Fry, Chris Williams, Shaun Brown, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Christine Ko, and Susannah Fielding.
McHale and LeBlanc aren’t the only sitcom stars returning for new CBS shows: The network has also already ordered Kevin Can Wait starring the King of Queens, Kevin James.
CBS will unveil their 2016-2017 schedule on Wednesday, May 18.
