I do think that Smallville did a better job at making Kara (an alien woman raised in an alien culture) feel like a fish out of water, than the Supergirl TV show did. There, they have her land on Earth when she's like 13 (whereas Vandervoort's Kara was like 19)... then they do a 12 year time jump, to when she's already assimilated into Earth society. Kara having grown up in an alien culture (and only recently arrived on Earth) is an important aspect, to distinguish her from Clark.
