I think it was a good choice to only have him in full "Bizarro" mode, when exposed to direct sunlight and to do it in CGI. On Superboy, the practical make-up (complicated make-up effects can take hours to apply) required Bizarro to be played by a different actor. The same on Supergirl. When she looked exactly like Kara, she was played by Melissa Benoist. But, when she permantly changed into Bizarro face, she had to be played by a different actress.
Here, they were able to have Tom Welling play both characters, in the same scene, and all he needed to do is change a shirt and jacket. And the rest could be done in post.
Overall, I thought this was a good start, to what sadly became a weak season (partially due to the writers' strike). Sadly, they had to end it with a reveal that Lana is still alive.
