Lex is a little too emotionally guarded and can't fully let some one in without getting hurt in the process. Considering his previous relationships all ended badly with all the same circumstantial outcomes. Lex is incapable of seeing people outside of how they relate to him and believes that many, if not all of their actions are designed to hurt him, this initially seemed to simply be a result of his upbringing and playboy lifestyle, it increasingly became his main character trait to the point that he saw every one around him as extensions of himself, viewed his role as a leader only in terms of how it could benefit him and more or less believed that the world existed to serve his purposes. With that said I have to honestly say that it is difficult to determine what his intentions are towards Lana because he can be very misleading, on the one hand he actually does love Lana and is not using her to hurt Clark, but on the other hand his thirst for power, desire for control and his secrets and lies has Lana ending up leaving him at the end. if all he does is attract all the wrong women, then why can't we just have Lex become gay? I think Clark is better for Lex than Lana because they're a little more similar as polar opposites go. After all it is the Clark & Lex story and Lana has no place in it. Both Clark's and Lex's infatuation with Lana ultimately becomes the reason of their rift, she gets in between them when it's not her place to get involved. They're always competing for her affections that Lana becomes their untimely demise. She helps Clark move forward with Lois and into becoming superman and Lex's descent into evil basically not just Lionel although he is big part of that. It is not just their constant secrets and lies to each other. Both Lionel and Lana had a part to play in that too
This is very well said. You make some very valid points.

Lana didn't really cause the rift at all.

      • I honestly think the one of the biggest reasons why Lex went after Lana was because of the EP "Lexmas".

Remember how baffled he was that he apparently ended up with Lana, because he never really saw her in a romantic light? But then he saw the cute son he had with her... and then He started talking about how he always wanted a loving family of his own. Once he saw that he had a family thanks to Lana, he was super into the idea of being with Lana.

I think that if Lex's mother showed him with Chloe or anybody else, then he would probably had gone after them instead in order to have the family he always wanted. Heck, he would probably even turn bisexual for Gabe if Lex's mother showed him the perfect family he would have with him.
So his desire to have a family had nothing to do with Lana at the time... save for the fact that Lex's mom showed him the cute son he was going to have thanks to Lana.

Of course, the fact that it was ticking off Clark Kent later on was also a very nice bonus for Lex.

He was shown to have romantic feelings for her prior to that.

          • Sorry, but I didn't see that as romantic behavior at all... that was just Lex being friendly towards Lana.

They hint at it quite a bit in season 4. He gets Jason fired. Bad Onyx Lex kisses her. In Commencement he holds her face and tells her that her safety is more important than any of this.

              • That's a little bit of a stretch, don't you think... getting Jason fired because he had feelings for Lana? I saw it as him being creeped out that Jason would date a girl still in high school while he was a high school coach. Of course everyone saw him as the bad guy for ratting Jason out to the school board, but Lex did have a good point (regardless of his motives) that Jason shouldn't be doing that, even if Lana was now of legal age in the state of Kansas.

Onyx-- still a stretch, he wasn't in his right mind at all... considering that he was split in two.

Commencement-- Well, considering the bad relationship Lex had with Mrs.Teague, and how he was trying to get to the stone of power too... don't you think he had a pretty clear motive there besides being in love with Lana?? in fact he asked her for the stone of power....

Onyx Lex was still a part of Lex, which showed that the actual Lex somewhere had romantic feelings for Lana.

It's possible that was a part of it. But even Clark suspected something was up with that.

He said that after he asked for it and grabbed her bag and started rummaging through it. I'm not saying he fully meant it. But that he did feel something.

                  • In "Lara", Lionel notes that Lex is obsessed with Clark and everyone associated with him. It's then possible that Lex's interest in Lana was merely an extension of his obsession with Clark. The boy who had everything Lex ever wanted (a loving home, loving parents and friends). As the show progressed, Clark even got the interest of Lex's dad. So, being with Lana was simply taking something from "the boy who had everything", as far as Lex was concerned.
