  • Metropolis Meeting

Ireallylikethisshow, I was impressed by your effort and touched by a sense of fellow feeling, so I thought I'd aid your cause by writing a Loix fic just for fun.

    One-Shot

The wet streets were jam packed with taxis and buses, blaring horns and flashing turn lights, as prime traffic hour (twilight) descended onto Metropolis.

Lois' umbrella flew out of her hands when a particularly forceful wind blasted its way between the skyscrapers. She moaned in the cold, too damp to curse. She'd been standing on the curb waiting for a taxi for half an hour.

"Lane?" a masculine hand took her arm and she turned quickly to see millionaire Lex Luthor at her side, looking down at her with concern.

"What are you doing out in the elements? Get into the limo."

She opened her mouth to protest but nothing came out.

He noticed her doubt. "This is no time for enmity, Lois. I know we got a little carried away during the elections but I'm not quite beast enough to want to watch you die of pneumonia."

The ghost of a smile touched the corners of her mouth and she let him lead her to the open door of the long limousine that had pulled up silently in front of them.

Lex got into the back seat next to her and immediately started to pull off his layers of wool. She watched as two creme scarfs and two black mittens made their way to the car floor. He saw her watching him and gave her a smile.

"Now I'm just taking precautions. Look at you though. Every inch sodden with rain. Better shed it faster than a cat."

"Thanks for your concern, Lex, but I'm not quite going to strip before you in this enclosed environment." A grin softened her words.

He rose an eyebrow. "Not that that's a sight I would be averse to witnessing, but that's not exactly what I had in mind. Removing your jacket might be enough."

She slowly complied, basking in the hot vents of the heater. Oh, it was heavenly. Her body began to tingle with returned life.

"Where are we going?" she asked. "You didn't ask for my address."

He hesitated. "I could ask the driver to change course."

"Where were you headed on a stormy night like this?" she persisted curiously. "Back to the Luthor residence?"

"No, I wish I was but there's a Governor's Ball being held for the Metropolis elite in the old town." He shrugged. "I have to make the Luthor presence felt."

"You're going to a ball?" Lois repeated. "In this downpour?" she tried to keep her face straight. "I'm sure it'll be very festive."

"You know it is an indoors event," Lex reminded her pointedly. "In fact it's bound to be very cosy. There will no doubt be crackling wood in the grates and a lot of heavy velvet draperies."

Her hazel eyes took on a gleam. "Oh, and you did say the elite. I wonder who else will be there?"

He read her mind. "You can find out in the gossip column early tomorrow morning. You're not going." He narrowed his eyes.

She quirked an eyebrow at him. "Oh come now, you don't seem to be escorting anyone else. Or are you going to stop by Bessolo Heights for a fair dame on your way?"

He couldn't help smiling. "Now, now, there's no fairer dame than you."

She laughed. "Gallantry! First a warm ride and now a compliment. I must say, Lex, when the world gets wet and ugly, you do shine."

He cocked his head to one side, trying to read her expression better. There was bright life in her green-brown gaze; her cheeks were pink; her mouth smiling. "Are you serious?" he asked. "Do you want to go to the ball with me?"

"Well, not as a date or anything, so don't be getting any ideas." She smirked.

"Date or not, you'd do better to go home and wrap yourself up in blankets."

She let out an exasperated sigh. "I'm not an old granny yet, Lex. Or a delicate socialite. I don't need to be swaddled."

It was his turn to smirk. "No stripping and no swaddling. Can't win with you, can I?"

She raised her brows loftily. "I apply moderation in all things."

    He snorted.

"Don't be rude," she said lightly.

"I was going to bring out the champagne but I fear to test your moderation so immediately," Lex replied.

She refrained from sticking out her tongue. "Fine, keep your vintage aged champagne to yourself. I'm sure they'll have better at the party."

"You're sure you want to go?" he checked again.

    "Lex, quit asking."

"You're not dressed for a ball," he mused.

She looked down at her thick red-and-beige plaid pants and ruffle shirt. "Hmm.... maybe I'll tell you where I live after all."

    "To stay?"

"To change." She rolled her eyes. "I'm a woman of decision, Lex. When I say I'll do something I mean it!"

"Ah," he smiled as he settled back against the cushions. "You mean you're a stubborn female. Prickly, hard-headed and loyal to a fault. I knew that already, Lois."

She scowled. "Well, when you knew all my virtues, how dared you call me a mere muffin-peddler?" She was surprised to find she was only half-joking. Darn, did that still rankle with her?

Lex dropped his gaze. "Alas. I may have recognized your virtues but you remained blind to my own."

She turned sheepish. "I was kind of rude, wasn't I?"

    "Kind of," he agreed sadly.

"Maybe this is a good time to say that I always appreciated what you did for me and Lucy? And that I have a problem with remembering a person's good points when in the, er, passion of my emotions?" she grinned lop-sidedly at him.

He extended his hand. "I'll accept your apology if you'll accept mine."

She took it easily. "Done deal, Luthor. And a bargain at that."

His brows raised skeptically. "I thought I was being very fair."

"No way. A chance at friendship is priceless." Lois winked at him.

"Are you just saying that because I'm a billionaire?" Lex asked suspiciously, his eyes twinkling with laughter.

Lois pooh-poohed the notion. "Don't be paranoid."

He smiled. She smiled back. And neither noticed that their hands were still warmly clasping the other's. They just felt a deep contentment as the limousine crawled along the dark roads of the great metropolis.

    THE END

Aww Jazel always so sweet! Call it a test of your true Clois love, if they can weather the storms of Lana then it just proves to the world what we mean by true love. Similarly if the reader can weather the storms too it shows dedication! lol

Sorry LoisL got a little sidetracked. Always like your writing, so just figured I'd pop over here to check out the Lexis, and it's not half bad for a Lexis. Pretty Darn good infact. Im with Jazel though if it read Clark instead of Lex it would be sublime.

Lol, yeah, I think this is the end of my detour. Time to get back to the real thing.

oh no, why is that the end, I wanted to see the ball. I'm a Cloiser, but I enjoy seeing other ships, and with the problems Lois has had with Lex on the show, I'm interested in seeing how they could have a romance like in other version of the mythos. I think you did a good job of setting it up, but I'd like to see where it's going.

                thanks, gj430, glad someone's being open-minded!

nah, i'm just kidding. i can't make Lexois romantic coz my fave Loises ('40s comics, ED and MK) never remotely liked him.

but i do like the idea of SV Lex being good. so i thought a friendship with Lois would illustrate his good side.

                thanks for the encouragement though!
