Or it could just be another example of lazy writing. There were a few stupid things involving Lex on this episode:
1) Why would Lex be testing an extremely powerful naval weapon system in a Kansas Lake? While trying to keep it under wraps? While the public is obviously still swimming in the lake?
2) Why does Lex leave his top secret files laying in his unguarded laboratory that is obviously not difficult to gain access to?
3) Why does Lex never have security cameras installed where Clark uses his powers?
4) Why does Lex keep allowing Clark to wander into his mansion?
And not really stupid on the part of Lex, but...
5) Why are people in Smallville always so willing to dismiss the fact that they or someone they know is drugged, kidnapped, and/or detained by someone else on a weekly basis?
