  • The Mask (1994)

One of three big hit movies that Jim Carrey made in 1994. Based on a Dark Horse comic book series. It was made by New Line Cinema, then best known for Nightmare on Elm Street movies. In fact, the director of this film also directed the third instalment of that series. It's co-written by Mark Verheiden, who later worked on Smallville. Speaking of Verheiden. This takes place in Edge City. Edge City is also featured on Smallville. No idea if it's something from the Dark Horse comic, or if it was a city invented by Verheiden and/or co-writer Michael Fallon.

Decided to check it out on HBO Max. Didn't care for it. Didn't care for Carrey's character. Before becoming the Mask, he's got pictures of cartoon characters on the walls of his apartment, and watches cartoons. He insists that he's a nice guy, which I get the impression that he isn't really. The mask is presented as bringing out who you are deep down. After he becomes the Mask, one of the first things he does is going to some mechanics, that were trying to screw him over... attacks them and inserts exhaust pipes in their butts. Not only is the first half a disproportionate response to their behavior, but the second half could potentially be considered sexual assault. Then there's his behavior towards Tina (Cameron Diaz). Stanley claims to be a romantic, but he comes across more as a sexual predator towards her. When they meet up in the park, he doesn't let her leave, when she wants. He climbs on top of her, when she's clearly terrified (and tries to get away). When he tries to escape the police, he runs into a woman, who starts screaming out of fear. He responds by grabbing her, and kissing her. He's not a nice guy, he's a creep to women (no wonder they don't like him). Earlier in the film, he also uses his powers to rob a bank. Oh, he also fires a machine gun at some street youths. Despite all of these actions from him, we're supposed to view him as a hero. The film itself insists that the Mask is just a representation of what Stanley is deep down, not an external entity possessing his body.
