'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' won the pre-Thanksgiving weekend, while 'Trolls Band Together' finished second in North America with $30.6 million.

The outlook continues to look bleak for superhero pic The Marvels, which is falling off 78 percent to 80 percent in its second outing to rank as Marvel Studios’ worst second-weekend drop of all time, as well as the worst for any Hollywood superhero pic. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, threequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania previously sported the worst drop of 69 percent.

The Marvels is expected to earn $9 million to $10 million for the weekend, putting it in a potentially close race with Thanksgiving, although most rival studios show The Marvels coming in third ahead of Thanksgiving.

The current friday gross (Nov 17) estimate on Box Office Mojo is $2,800,000, which is a 87% drop from the previous friday/opening day.

Disney boss Bob Iger claims a lack of supervision while filming during the pandemic hurt The Marvels ahead of its underwhelming theatrical run.

Disney boss Bob Iger claims a lack of supervision while filming during the pandemic hurt The Marvels ahead of its underwhelming theatrical run.

Disney CEO Bob Iger believes a lack of supervision on the set of The Marvels eventually hurt the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster as it weathers a disappointing theatrical run.

While speaking at the New York Times' Dealbook Summit, Iger admitted the Captain Marvel sequel, which was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, was hurt by not having sufficient oversight on set. A combination of stringent pandemic restrictions and an increased focus on content for Disney+ following its launch made it harder for Disney to properly supervise the various new productions in the works at the time. ″‘The Marvels’ was shot during Covid,” Iger said. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

Production for The Marvels was fraught with issues since shooting began in July 2021 in England. Reportedly, creative issues plagued the sequel, leading to Marvel president Kevin Feige sanctioning weeks of reshoots as he was unhappy with the direction the film was headed. A subsequent test screening revealed further cracks in the superhero film as it was met with less than enthusiastic feedback from the audience. Additionally, there was the controversy surrounding director Nia DaCosta, who left during post-production as she began work on another project, Hedda, featuring Thor franchise star Tessa Thompson.

Since its release on Nov. 10, The Marvels has endured a difficult box-office run. The MCU blockbuster has made just $187.9 million against its gross budget of $275 million, suffering steep declines in each of the last two weekends as it failed to make the top five of the domestic box office chart. This is a far cry from 2019's Captain Marvel, which earned over $1.13 billion at the box office. At its current pace, The Marvels will become the first MCU title to fail to reach $100 million domestically and the second to lose Marvel money in the post-pandemic era after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Vellani recently deflected the film's box-office struggles by suggesting Iger should be the one to answer questions about them. Meanwhile, legendary author Stephen King leapt to The Marvels' defense after calling out detractors who reveled in the film's box-office struggles, with some criticisms claiming the movie was too "woke," for their liking. Meanwhile, Larson has teased her next appearance in the MCU despite reports she's grown "disillusioned" with playing Captain Marvel.

0:58 Come to think of it, she's right. Carol dropped by Earth in 1995, but nobody knows about it. Then she spent the next 23 years in space, before being summoned back to Earth by the pager. She met the Avengers, then they went to the planet where Thanos was and killed him. We don't know if she went back to Earth after that. So she might have spent the next five years in space, only showing up for the end battle. Attended Tony's funeral, and, by all account, left Earth again. Would Kamala (and other people of the general public) really even know that Carol exist?
