Actually, they are pushing it back an hour to make it the lead-in for a new show "Riverdale" (a twist on the Archie comics--described as "Twins Peaks meets Dawson's Creek"). Usually shows that are doing well are used as lead ins for new or struggling shows, so that's how I took the hour earlier move...

... Except the reason they're moving the show is the literal exact opposite of what you're saying.

Supernatual ratings are so consistently solid for The CW, they trust it to boost up other shows and know it can survive in pretty much any time slot.

Exactly. SPN does pretty well in the ratings (especially for a show that is over 10 years old!). They are using it and it's loyal fanbase as the lead in for Riverdale (the new show based on Archie comics). That's why it's being moved to the earlier time slot. Not because of ratings slipping.
