I think the show wanted to make a political statement, which in the hands of other shows, I think could have been done well, but with this show's track record...did anyone expect it to go well?

Yeah, SV was always a little heavy-handed when they got political (Subterranean, anyone?!) They managed to leave it out most of the time, fortunately.
