Yeah, they're Marvel's version of Mutants/X-men...at least that's what I've heard.

No, I think they've been around for just as long as any other Marvel creation; there are established Inhuman characters. It's just that whole mess they had with sharing the Quicksilver/Scarlett Witch characters. It saves Marvel any grief if they can share other characters that otherwise would be X-Men characters.
