A question about Smallville: "Luthor"

In the "Luthor" episode of Smallville, Clark goes into an alternate reality where he was raised by Lionel Luthor. In the episode, Lionel tosses a fencing sword to Clark, and he catches it by the blade, and it makes him bleed. I was wondering, how did it cut him? He's shown right after that super speeding so he has his powers.

The tip of the foil is glowing blue which means there's a small (probably sharp, too) blue kryptonite piece at the end.

Closeness to BlueK on Smallville means no powers which is a bad thing if you try to catch a blade.
