"Guardians of the Galaxy" co-writer Nicole Perlman and "Inside Out" scribe Meg LeFauve are in talks to pen "Captain Marvel," The Tracking Board reports. The Wrap subsequently ran its own report, stating that "an individual familiar" had the same information.

"Captain Marvel" is slated to be Marvel Studios' first female-led film. The movie will follow Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who gets energy absorption and flight powers following an accident that infuses her with Kree DNA. There is no director yet attached, though The Wrap states that Michelle MacLaren, announced today to have left Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" film, has been rumored for the spot.

Perlman was the first credited female screenwriter of a Marvel Studios film, through there were subsequent conflicting reports on how much of the final product was her script, and how much was "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn's rewrite. Perlman and LaFauve would mark two women writers on "Captain Marvel," a fan-favorite character whose recent resurgence has been guided by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Perlman is also set to write a "Gamora" comic book series for Marvel, announced last fall at New York Comic Con.

"Captain Marvel" is scheduled for a July 6, 2018 release.

Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, it's confirmed that Captain Marvel won't have a cameo in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." However, it turns out the fan-favorite superhero came really close -- so close that director Joss Whedon filmed FX footage of her in flight.

Speaking with Badass Digest, Marvel Studios Kevin Feige explained the rationale for excluding Carol Danvers from "Age of Ultron," rather than introducing her at the very end. (Caution: A minor spoiler for the film follows.)

"[T]o me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99 percent of the audience would go, ‘Who is that?’" he said. "It’s just not the way we’ve done it before."

Captain Marvel's FX shots didn't go to waste, however.
"The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie?"
Feige said. "Those were Captain Marvel plate shots."

Screenwriters for Marvel's 2018 film Captain Marvel might be focused on trying to tell the best superhero story they can, but they're also very aware of the groundbreaking role of the character as the star of Marvel Studios' first female-helmed movie. Writer Nicole Perlman, who also wrote Guardians of the Galaxy, told Wired that working on Captain Marvel with co-writer Meg LeFauve is much more stressful because of the "magnitude."

“We’ve been talking a lot about archetypes and what we want this movie to be about and just how to write a strong female superhero without making it Superman with boobs," the writer said at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "Meg and I are doing a lot of brainstorming and we’ll catch ourselves and say, ‘Wait a minute, what are we saying [here] about women in power?’ Then we have to say, ‘Why are we getting so hung up on that? We should just tell the best story and build the best character.’

"And then we have this constant back-and-forth about how to tell a story that is compelling, entertaining, moving, kick-ass, and fun, and also be aware of what those larger implications might be," she said. "It’s a lot more complicated than just writing [Guardians of the Galaxy].”

Too bad they can't use Rogue, she'd make a pretty good antagonist/uneasy ally.

A new report from HeroicHollywood claims "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" star Rebecca Ferguson is currently at the top of Marvel Studio's list to play Captain Marvel in the character's solo film. However, the report notes that it is unclear whether talks have taken place or if an offer has been made.

Ferguson was recently on the shortlist for the part of Bella Donna in "Gambit," though she took herself out of the running for the film in order to star in "The Girl on the Train." She has already proved herself an action star by starring opposite Tom Cruise in this summer's blockbuster "Mission Impossible" installment.

In order to accommodate the new Ant-Man and the Wasp movie, "Captain Marvel" has been pushed back again to March 8, 2019 from November 2, 2018 (source:CBR).

Oscar winner Brie Larson is in early talks to play the title character in "Captain Marvel," as reported Wednesday by Variety. According to the outlet, the "Room" star is the frontrunner to play Carol Danvers in the upcoming Marvel Studios film.

While it isn't clear on how far Larson's negotiations have progressed, the report claims that she is "the first choice, and that she’s leaning toward playing the part." Marvel declined comment on Variety's report.

We're still a few years off from seeing Carol Danvers in theaters, but screenwriters Nicole Perlman ("Guardians of the Galaxy") and Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out") are already hard at work crafting the story for "Captain Marvel." In a recent interview on the podcast "Any Time with Vin Forte," Perlman dropped plenty of information on the development of Marvel's first female-led superhero cinematic outing, including the need to distinguish Ms. Danvers from certain intergalactic characters before her.

"She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently," Perlman said. "But here’s the thing: if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen."

In the comics, Carol Danvers is an Air Force officer working with Dr. Walter Lawson, the latter of whom is actually Mar-Vell, a Kree in disguise who defends Earth as Captain Marvel. After Mar-Vell shields Danvers from a Kree device's explosion, she absorbs radiation that gives her similar powers, and takes the mantel from her friend. Coincidentally, Green Lantern is Hal Jordan -- an Air Force test pilot who inherits his own cosmic strength after stumbling upon the dying alien Abin Sur, so one can at least see where Perlman is coming from. None of this seems to worry the writer, however.

"It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film,” she said.

A fourth contender has reportedly emerged to direct the 2019 Captain Marvel film for Marvel Studios. According to Mashable Senior Film Reporter Jeff Sneider, Universal Pictures’ The Little Mermaid director Rebecca Thomas has been in contention for the role going back “months.”
