  • Why did Michael Rosenbaum quit smallville?

It just seems like such a shame! His performance as Lex Luthor was one of the best things about Smallville. Also, the character had just found out Clark's secrete. This meant he had the potential to become the true worst enemy of Clark. There was so much more potential for that character. Why did Michael Rosenbaum quit smallville?

His and Kristin's contract ended with S7. I don't know when he decided to leave but seven years is a long time for an actor to spend on one character.

And let's face it, S7 was the very low point (from a narrative point of view) of Smallville. Add to that the writer's strike of that year and you get an actor who may think to himself "this cake is eaten".

From Michael's behavior in interviews since, it appeared his main reason for leaving was a combo of health and career concerns. At the time, he seemed to be thinking his next job would be feature films, but the show would limit that. Also, he said many times he'd just gotten sick of shaving his head in the cold Canadian weather...and the producers wouldn't let him use a bald cap every day.

Never got why they had to have him be bald from the start. The character originally had hair, when he was introduced in the comics, in the 1930's (the bald Luthor was a later redesign). The Superboy story, where the two meets as teens started out with Lex having hair (and then losing it in a lab accident, that he blames Supes for). When DC rebooted in the 80's, Lex was again introduced with hair (that he later lost). Why not let Rosenbaum's Lex have hair, which he then looses towards the end of the series?
