Confused on how Brainiac is posing as Kara

I thought Kara "destroyed" Brainiac in the past, and both Kara and Clark got back safely.
How is Brainiac posing as Kara?

On Krypton, when Clark went back to save himself as a baby in Apocalypse (S07E18), we saw Brainiac impaled on a stalagmite then Kara about to smash a boulder on him (which we didn't see). In the next shot, as Clark was sending baby Kal-El on his way in the ship, Kara ran up to Clark and told him Brainiac had been destroyed. This "Kara" was actually Brainiac morphed as Kara. Brainiac is a machine so the stalagmite nor the boulder would've destroyed him. Out of shot, before Clark sent Kal-El off, Brainiac overcame her and banished her to the Phantom Zone, and morphed into Kara then went back to Earth with Clark in the last remaining portal.
