I knew Julie Plec had a good reason to have Elena choose Stefan in the finale, and this is why. Stelena needed closure. Elena needed to get back together with him so they could have the breakup they never had last season. This episode was the perfect time for it to happen. Stefan had tried for the past three seasons to keep Elena to himself. He hated the thought of her spending time with another man. It is now clear to him that his efforts are useless. Delena is happening. Stefan and Elena had a nice breakup. Stefan probably broke up with her because he knew he was losing her and wanted the last word, but even so, they had a nice talk and reached the conclusion that they do not work well together.
Elena is a different person than she was a few seasons ago. Back then, Stefan could easily keep a hold on her. But now she's a vampire, and she's a fighter. She can't be tied down by her ex boyfriend any longer. She is now mature enough for a relationship with Damon.
Throughout the episode, Elena kept confusing reality with illusions, unable to recognize people. On the bridge, when Elena saw Damon, she saw him. She didn't see Connor or any other illusion, she saw Damon. He was the person who could break through to her. And then he saved her life, and they held hands. And just when it all seemed perfect, Damon decided to once again be the selfless brother. He told her why Stefan has been acting secretive. Damon is clearly the mature brother, and Elena is ready for a true mature relationship with him.
