Where did Uncle Zack come from?

I've been pondering this question and haven't come up with an answer... where the heck did uncle zack come from? As far as we know in the series so far, Stefan and Damon were the only children in the family. THere is no way that they could have any descendants. and zack isn't a vampire. so how are they even related?!

Either Gueippse did have some other family carry on the Salvatore's or he was just some random guy they made take the house or something, maybe he stayed there wen it was a boarding house, or apartment place or whatever.
