the bolded is the reason I haven't completely walked away from this show...they keep killing my favorite characters...but now I'm going to have bad thoughts of wanting Elena to walk in front of a bus or something...

Really? Sugar honey, it was in fact that Elijah blackmailed Elena, he was going to kill her so he could kill Klaus another original. The promise was that Elijah was to not hurt Elena's friends and family, but it did not extend to Elena herself. A loophole which he, while still keeping his word, exploited.

However, having a body that is still in tact with a dagger in it can still have the dagger out of it. I wonder what happens if the body goes in the sunlight, will it still be intact? Originals can be in the sunlight, but a "dead" original in the sunlight??
