The way I see it, the endgame played out exactly as God intended from the very beginning. Lucifer and Michael may have believed (and convinced the rest of Heaven and Hell along with them) that the "plan" was for them to fight and the victor to take the spoils, but IMO God bet on humans a long time ago. It is easy to predict the outcome (a fight) when one son is created to rebel and one son is created to be a good soldier, but they both forgot that the third son (humanity) was created to make up their own mind and to choose their own side. Then it becomes less of a sure thing and more of a gamble on the outcome.
And let's not forget that while Angels can think like Angels, no-one can think like God (assuming he is the true creator and not just the bloke the Jews thought up a few thousand years ago - that deity is no more important than Ganesh) since He has no equal. No one can know what he is truly thinking, no one can know what he is truly planning. And like I say, the plan was not for one brother to beat the other, but for the fight to be prevented by humanities greatest gift. Free Will. God bet the planet on that gift, and it paid off.
