The light going out

Jacob's fake mom told him that if the light went out it would go out for the entire planet.

Does that mean that the whole world started to fall apart while it was out?

The mother protector stating if the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere. I took that to be a big metaphor for hell on earth. The plug seemed to be separating good from evil at the source and the red light after it was removed is kind of ominously symbolic.
