Do ratings even matter anymore now that Supernatural has been renewed for Season 6? Would lower ratings at this point hurt the Season 6 budget?

I think ratings do matter, even with the renewal. Ratings = revenue from ads. If ratings are down, companies won't want to pay to advertise during the show. The CW has never turned a profit. If they want that to change they can't afford to keep shows that don't generate money. One good thing for Supernatural is that it is very profitible in DVD and merchandise sales and is very popular overseas.

Plus networks have renewed shows before then changed their minds later and cancelled the show. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen. I'd rather see the ratings stay up so that the CW has no excuse to cancel the show.
