I have been informed that a recent comic arc has retconned comics!Lois's past so that her mother died when she was young. Making it even more similar to Lois in Smallville.

I've collected but not read comics over the past several years, so I don't know more about it. But this is what I've been told.

Lois as a character, distinct from ED's specific portrayal, is a great female role. She is this sharp, witty career gal. The character emerged in the 1930's, when few women who weren't desperately poor were working outside the home (and the desperately poor were working as laundresses, sweatshop seamstresses, etc.). My grandmother and her sisters were about the same generation as the original Lois; they all left home at a young age and ended up getting jobs as school teachers (basically the only job for a college-educated woman in those days).

So yeah, I think Lois is a kind of feminist heroine, because she has a really strong man in her life, but she is not defined by their relationship. She is truly her own person. I also like the fact that she had the experience of kissing a few frogs before finding her prince.

I also think that ED does a great job conveying Lois' sassy, wise-cracking attitude.

Secret Origins by Goeff Johns is where the retcon about Lois' mom being dead now is.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and Lois has always been a divisive character. If she weren't, she wouldn't be Lois. There are characters I hate. Loathe, even. So I can't hold it against others that their character they hate is Lois. I don't really understand it, since I think she's quite possibly the most awesome female character ever. But I can't hold it against them.

I used to think that Lois was a snoozefest and wasn't needed. Now I enjoy Lois. I really wish they would have waited on introducing her character. It was premature, she was immature, and I didn't like it. Since she's grown up a bit, she's tolerable, and she makes me smile.

Before S8 I didn't pay her much attention if I'm honest, they never gave her enough 'meat' in my eyes but after Bride I now prefer her over Clark lol
