  • Redemption (Arthur/Morgana

I wrote this little ficlet a year ago for some friends who are fans of the Arthur/Morgana pairing.

“Arthur, King of Camelot. Yours will be a golden age. An age of prosperity, of chivalry, of conquest, of magic.” And here her eyes fell on Merlin, briefly, before flickering away, growing distant again as if the future was stretched out before her for her to gaze upon. An empty road yet to be travelled.

“You will ride into legend. You will be immortalized in song. They will tell your tale for thousands of years. Camelot will rise,” her voice lowered until it was barely a whisper, “and it will fall. It will be the greatest story ever told.”

Somewhere in the forest a twig snapped and the spell was broken. Arthur was the first to recover, shaking himself as if waking from a deep slumber. Merlin watched out of the corner of his eyes as Arthur, hand on scabbard, advanced slowly until he was almost upon her.

“Your efforts are in vain.” She turned suddenly, her gown sweeping the brightly coloured autumn leaves, green eyes blazing gold in the thready sunlight and they were trapped again in the thrall of her voice, weighed down by her words.

She touched Arthur’s shield briefly, her fingers grazing the crest, the crown, the dragon before moving to stand by Morgana. Her expressive face curiously blank, one hand reaching out to Arthur.

“Morgana of Camelot,” the words were whispered to a wistful chord, a melancholy song. “History will remember you as Morgana Le Fay.” She took Morgana’s hand, smoothed it out and then closed it, wrapping her own hand around Morgana’s fist. “Healer or sorceress? His saviour or his downfall? What will it be?”

She dropped her hand just as suddenly as she had taken it. “Perhaps it matters not that your looks are full of spells and your words of sorcery. Perhaps it matters not at all for in the end when all is said and all is done. In the end it will be you that will guide his boat to Avalon. He will be your redemption just as you will be his.”
