    Never After

A/N: This fan fiction is a sequel to Injustice. So if you haven’t read Injustice, you won’t understand this story (basically it leaves off from the epilogue, so if you just read that, you’ll understand where I am starting from). I actually wasn’t going to write this, but what the heck.

Summary: This story takes place almost a year after Injustice. Superman and the Justice League are doing their best to keep Metropolis safe, but when tragedy strikes, the team must lean on each other while facing their inner most demons.

    CHAPTER ONE

FLOATING JUST ABOVE the Daily Planet Globe, Superman watched as the people below were finishing up their last minute chores before heading home and calling it a night. The sounds of the large city comforted him as he listened, making sure nothing was out of the ordinary or no one needed his help. In a few more hours, he would call it a night and head home to Lois, who had been spending a lot more time with his mother, learning how to cook home-made meals. He had made the mistake once to joke with Chloe about Lois becoming domesticated. Not only did he have to sleep on the couch, but he couldn’t taste the meal that Lois had prepared for Chloe, Bart and his mother, which apparently tasted as good as it smelt (not that he needed to eat, anyway).

Actually, when he got to thinking about it, his relationship with Lois was stronger than ever, and he was planning on proposing to her sometime after Bart and Chloe’s wedding which was coming up, even though Lois stated many times that she was in no rush to walk down the aisle. Next week he, Oliver, AC and Victor were going to throw Bart a bachelor party, while Lois threw Chloe her bachelorette party. It was going to be a busy month for Clark Kent, and he was thankful that the crime wave in Metropolis was now at an all time low, and he knew that it was all in part to Lex Luthor being firmly placed behind bars.

He was about to fly home to Smallville, where Lois and his mother were expecting him for a late dinner, when he heard a chilling scream. Using his super-hearing he tried to pinpoint where the cry for help was coming from.

“Please,” He heard the woman beg. “Don’t hurt me.”

“It’s a little too late for that,” The man’s voice said as he cocked his gun, aiming it right at her head and then pulled the trigger, while the woman screamed, and a rush of wind hit her face.

The woman opened her eyes to see a man in blue and red standing in front of her, and a wave of relief washed over her.

    “Superman,” She said gratefully.

“Superman!” The robber said angrily, and then tried to escape, which was pointless as Superman was already in front of the robber with his arms crossed.

“Just where do you think you’re going?” Superman asked, hearing the sounds of the police sirens in the distance. The robber fired bullets at him, but it bounced off his chest.

“You’re kidding right?” Superman asked as he grabbed the gun out of the robber’s hand, just as the police cars pulled up to the ally way.

Lieutenant Dan Turpin was the first to step out of the car, followed by his partner, Maggie Sawyer, who made her way over to woman who was attacked and helped her off the ground.

“We got it from here, Superman,” Dan said as he took the robber and cuffed him.

“Thanks for saving me, Superman,” The woman said, just before she was led to an awaiting ambulance.

“Come on, dirt bag,” Dan said as he pushed the robber toward the patrol car. “Hey Superman, thanks for your”—Dan started to say, as he turned around to face Superman, only to notice that he was gone –“...help.”

    ***********

Lex Luthor sat down on the mattress that was supported by a stone slab and two heavy duty chains. How he longed for his silk satin sheets, and his own bed that felt as though you were sleeping on clouds. He had served 3 years out of his life sentence so far, and all this misfortune that he was now facing was all thanks to an alien from the planet Krypton, called Superman.

“Lex, you have a visitor,” One of the guards said as he took the necessary precautions to transport a prisoner to the visiting area. Lex was intrigued. The last time he had a visitor was just over two years ago, when Lana Lang forced him to sign the divorce papers.

Hands cuffed, and feet shackled, he made his way to the visitor lounge, and went toward the direction the guard was pointing. He smiled as he pulled out the seat and grabbed the phone. This certainly was a surprise.

“I never expected to see you here,” Lex laughed.

“Cut the crap Lex. You know why I’m here,” His visitor responded looking dead serious.

“No, actually, I don’t.” He watched in amusement as his visitor held up a piece of paper and placed it against the glass divider. He leaned closer to view the foreclosure notice on the Talon. The foreclosure that he approved.

“All my stuff is gone, Lex. Where did you put it?”

“Who is the unlucky man getting married to you, Chloe?” Lex asked, noticing the engagement ring on her finger, which she quickly covered.

“You had no right to take my stuff Lex.”

“I had every right Chloe, you see, the Talon is my building, and since I’m going to be spending the rest of my life in here, I have no need for it anymore.”

“Where is my stuff, Lex?!” Chloe repeated, this time with more venom in her voice.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” Lex said smugly, and then hung up the phone, as the guard began to escort him back to his holding cell. He turned back to see Chloe slam her fist in the table.

It was still good to be Lex Luthor.

    *****************

Clark opened the door to his home and used his super-speed to quickly change out of his outfit and into something more comfortable. He smiled at his mother, who was warming up a dinner plate as he entered the kitchen.

“Hi sweetie,” Martha said, as Clark took a seat. “How was patrolling?”

“Just one incident tonight,” Clark responded. “Where’s Lois?”

Martha gave her son a sympathetic smile, knowing this was probably not the news he wanted to hear. “Lex Luthor foreclosed the Talon. Lois is with Chloe trying to find out where he put her stuff.”

“Even from behind bars he still manages to make our lives miserable,” Clark sighed as Martha put the plate in front of him.

“I told Chloe she is more than welcome to stay here until she and Bart find a place of their own.”

“Bart’s been preoccupied with the Justice League to look for a home in Keystone,” Clark commented, which was where Chloe and Bart were planning on living after they got married.

“With the wedding coming up, she definitely does not need this stress,” Martha added remembering how much stress her wedding to Jonathan was, and that was on a smaller scale.

“Chloe must be pissed,” Clark said.

“Lois had to move the phone away from her ear,” Martha said, which made Clark laugh, but he couldn’t help but feel responsible for Chloe’s dilemma, after all, Lex was launching a war against Superman, and if Chloe hadn’t hacked into the system out of his request to expose Luthor’s treasons, Lex would still be a free man. Although how he figured out that Chloe was responsible for hacking into the system, and still not being able to realize that Clark Kent and Superman were the same people (although that was a good thing) eluded him.

Sometimes being Superman wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be.

    Update!

Great start... 'specially with the one question I always wanted Superman to ask when someone shoots at him: "You're kidding me, right?"

    Loved that.

Hello and my apologies. I have had a pretty busy summer and couldn't find the time to write. So again I apologize, and if you are still interested, here is chapter 2.

    ************************************************** ***************

    CHAPTER 2

LOIS OPENED the door to the Kent’s home, as she and Chloe made their way inside. It had been a long drive from Smallville to Metropolis’s notorious prison and back, and not only were the Lane-Sullivan cousins tired, but they were also pissed off.

Martha greeted the two women with a sympathetic smile. Her late husband, Jonathon, knew exactly how manipulative the Luthor’s could be, and it was just unfortunate that Chloe had to be on the brunt end of it.

“I take it didn’t go well,” Martha said, as she flung the kitchen towel over her shoulder.

“That’s an understatement,” Lois said, biting back the venom in her voice. “Just where does he get off on taking things that doesn’t belong to him?”

“He owns half of Metropolis,” Clark said as he descended the steps to the living room. “He can do whatever he likes.”

“He isn’t going to get away with it—not this time,” Chloe replied, with coldness to her voice that mirrored Lex’s.

Clark sighed inwardly. He knew the dangers of taking Lex on, and if it wasn’t for the help of the Justice League, he probably would have never gotten this far and actually locking Lex up in prison for good.

Lois looked at Clark, in a way knowing what he was thinking. At this moment, Clark was probably the only one being realistic about Chloe’s plan to knock Lex down a peg or two. Chloe was getting married soon, and starting a life with the man she loves, and that was one thing Lex couldn’t take from her.

    ********************************

The Green Arrow picked himself up from off the ground, shaking off the debris that had landed on him from the surprise explosion.

“Cyborg to Green Arrow, do you copy?”

Oliver put his finger to the communicator that was in his ear.

“Just a little shaken up,” He replied, and then heard the relived sigh of Victor Stone.

“Don’t scare me like that, Green Beans,” Victor replied. “I’ve been trying to reach you since I saw the explosion.”

He looked back at the area that had almost killed him. He should have known better—an innocent tennis ball lying in the middle of a field isn’t so innocent when Toyman was involved.

The Green Lantern appeared over Oliver.

“The party moved that way,” Kyle Rayner said, pointing north. “Flash is chasing after Zoom, Cyborg and Aquaman are fighting Toyman, and Batman and Wonder Woman are taking care of Bane.”

“Let’s finish this,” Oliver replied as he became engulfed in the green light, as Kyle flew toward the action. He got his arrows ready to fire, and he wasn’t going to miss.

Wonder Woman smiled when she saw her friend survived the blast, and then quickly turned her attention to Batman, who had just been kicked to the ground. Whatever Bane had in those tubes of his, was giving him super strength, and so far the two of them had been unsuccessful in trying to unplug the source of his strength.

Wonder Woman took out her lasso, and tied it tightly around Bane.

“Batman! Now!” She cried, as Batman took out a batring and cut the tubes from his arms.

The sludge started to spill out, and his muscle mass was diminishing. She watched as Batman delivered a roundhouse kick to his face, knocking Bane unconscious. She then saw him place handcuffs around his hands. He would be secured until the others were taken care of.

“Let’s get Toyman,” Batman said, in which Diana nodded and flew to the others.

“What’s wrong with Cyborg?” Batman asked when he finally arrived, noticing Cyborg on the ground.

Toyman started laughing. “Maybe it was a computer malfunction.”

“He got hit by one of his gizmos,” Aquaman replied. He was getting frustrated as Toyman had an endless supply of explosions, keeping them all busy.

“I’m flattered that it takes 6—wait, 5 of you to stop poor, little old me,” Toyman laughed again, causing Batman to throw one of his batrings at Toyman, but failed as it reached an invisible force shield.

“Do you like it?” Toyman asked pointing to a toy belt, similar to Batman’s, and then threw another exploding tennis ball at the Justice League.

Wonder Woman was getting agitated. They had no way of stopping him.

“Hey GL,” Flash suddenly said, holding Toyman’s belt, and then throwing it to him.

“What the hell?!” Toyman squealed. “How did he get through?”

“I can vibrate my molecules,” He said, and then saw Zoom approaching him. “But gotta run.” And just like that he was gone again.

Green Lantern detained the belt, so when itself destructed, the green box he made would enclose the explosion.

Toyman slowly started to back away from the five members of the justice league, who had all their weapons and strength pointed at him. Batman quickly grabbed him and handcuffed him. The only person left to take care of was Zoom, and unfortunately the
Flash was by himself on this one.

    *****************

The Flash stopped running to survey his area. Even though at times it felt like he could run forever, right now he was tired and needed to rest.

“Giving up so soon?” He heard Zoom say from behind him, and he quickly turned around to face his inverted counter-part.

“Maybe in your dreams,” Bart responded.

“Let’s face it Flash, you know I’m faster than you,” Zoom mocked.

    There was a silence.

    “Yeah, you’re right.”

Zoom was shocked. “And here I thought you were going to deny that claim.”

“You may be faster than me, but on a side note, I’m smarter then you.”

Zoom didn’t have time to process Flash’s confusing sentence, instead he was greeted by a surcharge of electricity, rendering him unconscious. It was a little device that Flash had stuck on him when made the wrong decision to blink.
