Right, it's about time we got a thread going for this episode.......
A strong episode for me. Pretty dark in tone. I'd imagined from the name of the episode, and some of the stills I had seen, that the majority of it would be based on Clark's flight with Tess - and as a result I thought it would mainly be a set-piece, stand-alone episode. So I was pleasantly surprised to find the development of the Doomsday arc - I think it's quite a clever idea to have him stave off his transformation through the murdering of others. I think the writers have played it quite nicely, all this inner turmoil that Davis is feeling: crucifix in the ambulance; confessions to priests; the murdering of those he feels justice should be meted out upon. Of course it was fairly obvious that Chloe's soothing touch would calm the inner beast, too - but I think there is genuine chemistry between them that recalls the tragedy of doomed love (certainly more so than with Jimmy)......although does anyone else get the feeling that Davis Bloome/Sam Witwer is quite camp?
Jimmy's paranoia was pretty well done (in terms of Smallville) although we were never likely to get anything of Michael Rosenbaum's quality in Shattered (or indeed TW in Splinter) - but really it was a little too rushed. We haven't seen Jimmy for however many episodes and suddenly he's become pathologically delusional after a bit of cabin fever! Mind you, Doomsday taking a chunk out of you on "the happiest day of your life" would shake you up a bit! All in all I'm happy that that relationship is over - I never bought into it and maybe we were never supposed to.
I liked the cat and mouse stuff with Clark and Tess (she looked stunning in this episode!) I know it recalls the early Lex stuff, but the once bitten, twice shy aspect comes into play - plus I think Tess genuinely wants to believe that Clark is a saviour, not just someone to be exploited. Actually I think the same thing was true of Lex, but you know what I mean.
Oh and that little scene where Clark showed Chloe how he could change quickly was another gold star for S8's progression of Clark as Superman - which only makes you think, why did they feel the need to tarnish it with Power/Requiem?!
