  • Yeah, only two eps got over 5 million in season 7 but this season hasn't topped that rating yet.
You haven't noticed that has been going on for years? The only time in the history of the show that a later season did better than an earlier season was Season 2 doing better than Season 1, which began with 8.4 million (yes, that's not a typo, the show used to get over 8 million viewers) and ended with 6.0 million viewers with its finale. So it lost over 2 million viewers from debut to finale. Season 2, however, brought the numbers back up. It began with 8.7 million and ended with 7.5 million. That season also had the highest rated episode of all time, Lineage, which got 9.4 million viewers. Unfortunately, after Season 2 every season dropped from there forward. Season 3 began with 6.8 million and ended with 5.9 million. Season 4 began with 6.01 million and ended with 5.5 million. Season 5 began with 5.9 million and ended with 4.9 million. Season 6 began with 4.96 million and ended with 4.14 million. Season 7 began with 5.18 million and ended with 3.85 million. Season 8 started with 4.34 million.

Other things you haven't taken into consideration were day changes and time changes. Smallville began on Tuesday at 9/8 central time and kept that day/time through second season, but moved to Wednesday an hour earlier, 8/7, beginning Season 3 and stayed there through season 4. Season 5 it moved to Thursday and was still on the WB. The following year it became the CW, the poorest, least watched network on Earth and that has been its fate ever since. If you're trying to find shipper light at the end of this tunnel, it's simply not there.

You made my point. Fifth Grader is much more of a ratings competition against SV than "Hole in the WAll" or Kitchen Nightmare, yet Season 7's ratings still out performed Season 8's.
I'm not sure how often I have to say this, but Season 6 did better than Season 7 and 5 did better than 6 and 4 did better than 5 and so on. If you're trying to translate this into shipper numbers, then Lana and Jason did better in season 4 than Clark and Lana in season 5, but they did better than Lex and Lana in season 6, but Lex and Lana did better than Clark and Lana in season 7 and 8 and Whitney and Lana did better than any of them Seriously, Power got 4.21, but Void, where Lana killed herself over and over got 4.24 million viewers. Does that mean more people would rather see Lana dead than back with Clark? No comment.

Yeah, Power had repeats against it but it was also competing against American Idol which had 24.26 million viewers. You can't discount American Idol as a competition for SV. That's one of the reasons why Infamous was pushed back 2 weeks because CW didn't want it going up against AI which aired on 8:00 pm Thursdays two weeks prior to Infamous airing.
Uh, Smallville used to face American Idol all the time back when Smallville got much more impressive numbers than it does today. AI didn't seem to have much crossover with Smallville viewers. Smallville used to even go up against "24" back in the day too.

As far as Requiem it also went up against Bones new and not just Big Bang Theory repeat
A rerun of The Big Bang Theory. Infamous went up against Bones and Survivor. You would acknowledge that's a little tougher competition given Survivor beat Bones, right?

So what? With 4.8 million viewers it still did 90% better than any ep from this season.
Are you talking about the 4.8 for Fierce? First, the highest rated episode this season was Bloodline with 4.46 million. You think 4.8 is 90% better than 4.46? Is that new math? Second, if you want to compare ratings from older seasons, then how about 4.88 million for Wither? Isn't that the episode where Lana and Lex got it on? Lana sure peeled Lex's armor off pretty fast. Sorry, but any shipper connection falls like a lead balloon.

    • It's a great show that still has it's core audience intact after 8 years. I think that's pretty good. Shows always decline in ratings as the years go by, it's just a fact of life. It's still the highest rated show on the CW, and I think Turbulence is going to bring back a lot of the viewers that stopped watching after Power.

ITA. Analyzing the ratings can be a double-edged sword. One of the reasons for the decliing ratings was the switch to Thursday nights. Every network has traditionally put competitive shows on Thursday nights. The other blow to the ratings was when WB merged with UPN into the CW. The CW has less markets, so do the math.

Had Smallville been on a bigger network, it may have had better ratings, but it also may have been canceled years ago.

The CW and the Thursday time slot are both blessings and curses to Smallville when it comes to ratings, but I think ratings are over-rated (no pun intended) in this age of I-tunes, DVDs, and TV on the internet.

        • Exactly. And I fully believe that if they keep on showing that amazing trailer for Turbulence regularly, we'll get over 4 million and possibly 5. I definitely predict at least 6 million for the finale.

              • That's wonderful news bizzaroboy9. Considering the obstacles placed against the episode, I am so happy to see the show broke 4million in Live+7 ratings!

                Thank you for the update.
