  • This is how I love my SPN

I could not possibly rave about this episode more. I know that all of you guys have read my continuous rants this season about this or that aspect of S4. But here is one that I could not be happier with.

The funniest part is....it just figures. Family Remains doesn't have Ruby or Castiel or Uriel or any mention of the 66 seals or "Lucifer" or "God" and that is probably why I couldn't be happier. I have been very vocal about hating those aspects of S4 and I will treasure this episode forever. Jeremy Carver friggin' ROCKS.

The style with which he wrote this episode was awesome. The dark tone was much needed (at least for me). See that is how I like Supernatural to be, 90% gritty and moody atmosphere 10% lighthearted funny moments (to break it up). I wish this is how Supernatural could continue to be FOREVER. I like my funny episodes as much as the next person but when a show isn't "designated" as a funny epi but 3/4 of it ends up being laughs, it just gets to be too much. Supernatural is not a comedy, it's a scifi drama. It just compliments the abilites of the writers when we can see how cleverly they interweave funny moments into the dark themes of the episodes. Now the guys are hilarious and I would never technically turn down comedic moments from Sam or Dean (and Jared or Jensen respectively) but I find that I appreciate them that much more when they are interspersed within a serious/scary episode. A few of the one liners that slipped easily into the show with Dean being a smartass were-

Dean: (yells) What kind of ghost messes with a man's wheels?!?

Dean: Jeez, rent Juno, get over it.

Dean: Please nobody grab my leg. Please nobody grab my leg.

I thought those lines were great!

I enjoyed both brothers performances. But I gotta say I was a little puzzled yet again, on how they decided to write Sam here. I enjoyed his presence immensely but it did seem a little on the outskirts. And again, at the end when Dean is pouring his heart out, I'm not sure why the have Sam just standing there (like last time) with a sort of "Huh." look on his face. Like I know Sam has been through a lot (in fact I wish we would have gotten more about that during "his episode" which actually turned into "Ruby's episode") So again, I know he has been through a lot and has built walls in order to survive, but dude they didn't need to make him so unrecognizable this season from previous ones. Sam is one emo SOB and he always has been. He has always been the one to reach out and comfort others. There is so much compassion inside him. So I find it hard to believe that he can't even manage a comforting hand on Dean's shoulder or some other active sign of comfort. That just kind of bothers me. Sam Winchester is an excellent character, but they are just dropping the ball with him this year (IMO) and I just don't get it.

I remember the last time there was a brotherly banter moment was in H&H *shudders* (ugh.) and Sam said something to Dean like..."Stop confusing relaity with porn." The comment came off a little off-kilter me (though it seemed fine to everyone else) but I loved the moments between the brothers this episode-

Sam: We could tell them the truth.
    Dean: Really?
    Sam: No. Not really.

Sam: That's probably a dumb waiter. All the old houses had them.
    Dean: (mutters) Know it all.
    Sam: What?
    Dean: What?
    Sam: You said-
    Dean: What?
    Sam: Nevermind.
    Dean turns away and smirks

Those moments were so awesome. I mean they felt natural and subtly funny and I just got a sense of "brothers" from them.

I loved the twist that she wasn't a ghost even if it was made kind of obvious with how many times they said "Ghosts can't come though the circle." Ya kinda new whoever it was, was going to shock them all by stepping through. Or at least I did at least five minutes before it even happened. I just couldn't figure out what she was going to be. When Sam shined the flashlight on her. I thought maybe a vampire because she was sensitive to it but I wasn't even sure if I remembered that being SPN canon. When it turned out that it was just a girl I thought that was pretty damn creepy. I love the movie "People under the Stairs" so that was a cool outcome in my book.

I have always been a fan of MOTW episodes and this one just made me so sentimental. Even the part when they were talking about the remains of the two girls, one of the characters said that they had been cremated and I was like "CRAP!" Now there won't be a "salt 'n burn" GOD how I miss that. It was a staple of S1 it was sporadic in S2 but S3 and beyond it's pretty much non existant as is the brothers appearance in graveyards which is something I miss too. But this episode was still so....*at a loss*.....THIS is how I fell in love with SPN and THIS is the original and simple formula that made it so unique. And it works and I love it.

Cannot disagree with you more about the Angel storyline, I have thought ever since day 1 that if they are going to have demons and hell, then they must have angels and heaven. In the episode with the priest turned ghost who thought he was an Angel, I wanted him to be for that exact reason - although the way the angel storyline ended up playing out was far far better.

Still different strokes for different folks...

I don't know about you, but I don't think there really is anything you can say to that. Sorry? Its gonna be ok? You did what you had to do? There are no words that will do.

I belive the reason Sam doesn't say much is cause in previous episode Dean went off on him telling him he couldn't possibly know what it was like. And Dean never really wants to talk about it, So I think sam just kinda sits back and listens

I agree not much you can say to a person that is going through the inner turmoil and guilt that Dean is having to go through. And they probably also have already discussed this behind the scenes before so I think we can assume that Sam has tried to comfort Dean but that Dean won't accept - we see this from Dean every time in the brief moments he and Sam discuss the topic.

In the end, all Sam can do is listen. I think just being there for Dean and listening is the best thing to do for him right now.

Yes, certainly different strokes for different folks!! Because the funny part is we really are opposites. Three episodes that I never really cared for were Hookman, Faith and Houses of the Holy. All of them made me cringe because that was the very subject matter I did not want them to bring to the show. IMO Supernatural should be about only humans fighting and I honestly wanted them to stay away from the cliche of "the higher power"/good side. I mean in Sam and Dean's universe I was hoping it would be just the humans vs. darkness and supernatural til the end, working as hunters and their constantly moving individual lifestyle. So I would have been more than happy for angels and God to never have been mentioned at all. THAT would have been unique when the only thing on your side is your deeply instilled road warrior lifestyle the connection of family so strong it can never be broken.

Sometimes others happen to say things better than I can myself and here is a post by someone over at imdb-

What IS generic is the Apocalypse. Every hero in every fantasy show faces apocalypse sooner or later. To me, it's a major yawn moment on SPN. Robs the show of its originality and distinctive tone and turns it generic.
And another post that just says it all for me (expresses it a hundred times better than I could actually) about why this specific episode was so amazing and why I don't like the direction this season has taken-

Everything about tonight's episode was great. The story, the lighting, the atmosphere, the dialogue, all top notch. But if there was one thing that made me sad tonight, it was that this episode served as a reminder of how far this once great show has fallen.

What started as a refreshingly dark and minimalist approach to the supernatural about two nomad soldiers traveling the backroads of america hunting evil slowly devolved into a couple of melodramatic as$holes driving in and out of rejected Buffy the Vampire Slayer scripts.

What made me mad is the fact that tonight proved that the show is capable of being its once great former self. It proved that the writing staff hasn't gotten lazy or run out of ideas, but has chosen to reject the dark atmosphere and classic americana and actively embraced everything it once prided itself on avoiding.

Something has gone horribly wrong when an episode like this, one with a strictly horror plot, dark atmosphere, and the brothers investigating a case isn't seen as the show getting itself back on track but just a one week trip down memory lane.

Haha, I loved that bit!! I rewound it like 6 times just to see Dean's 'gotcha' grin again and again!!

And Dean admitted he enjoyed giving out all that torture. Didn't see that one coming, made me slighly queezy.

After the first 2 seasons, I kinda get a teeny bit tired when I realise an episode is a 'Monste'r episode. But this one was great.

I am suprised to see that someone hates the God vs Devil storyline for this season. In my opinion, it is the best storyline they have come up with. Lucifer is obviously the most dangerous evil of all, and the fact that he is danger of being released really makes the season interesting. Especially now with what we learned about Dean and his time in hell. I personally feel that overall this has been the best season of the show since S1.

One reason I love the angel storyline is because a) having no personal belief in the religion in question I can enjoy b) the Angels are not all pure and good and nicey nicey. My own experience with the mythology of angels comes purely from the comics Hellblazer and Preacher. To say that those stories follow the nicey nicey party line couldn't be further from the truth. God is portrayed as, respectively, insane and like a putulant child messing with his creation because he craves worshippers like a drug. That said, there is such a rich mythology to draw from its amazing it hasn't been done before.

The quote you included about the story turning into recycled Buffy scripts couldn't be further from the truth. I put it to you (your honour) that Buffy NEVER covered the "light side" of the mythology. In fact they never went biblical at all. Buffy going to heaven was explained under the multiverse theory, and I'm fine with that. But even when they talked about demons for 7 years they never talked about Lucifer, or any of the big nasties from downstairs.

I can't actually think of any show that has really gone biblical, the only other thing I can think of from the top of my head is the movies The Prophecy or Constantine (based on the Hellblazer comics in case you didn't know). So another reason to explore that mythology is that it really hasn't been done before in this way.

Finally think about the fact that in interviews Kripke has said that he was hoping that the series would get a 3rd season because he had a great story to tell. This is his baby, so back off, I've got Kripke on my side!

It's funny that you would compare Supernatural to Buffy since Buffy is taken from a lot of other things. There are no more original stories, just different ways to tell it. Me, I like the angel storyline. If there's evil, there should be good. If Dean can go to hell, there should be a heaven. I'm not a religous person, but I can appreciate good/evil balance. And if this story is going to stop them from doing a monster episode every week, I'm all for it.

I'm kinda confused here with the whole God/Lucifer thing. I thought that the existence of God had not yet been verified on the show.
The only time that they gave any specific info on "The big guy upstairs" was when Anna admitted to never actually having seen him. Angels are supposed to just have faith, same as humans (I absolutely LOVED that particular plot twist; it completely saved season 4 IMO).

Also I completely agree that SPN is nothing at all like Buffy. Supernatural is a lot darker and interesting because they actually don't portray the brothers as completely good guys. They don't get a happy ending most of the time (think about shooting werewolfs and witches dead in the head instead of giving them a slap on the wrist and sending them packing)

LMAO you know what's kind of funny? I seriously am like the ONLY person here who feels the way I do about the show? You know?

And I read some comments on other sites that just say exactly how I feel and I can't help but post them over here because sometimes they say it so much better than I can, myself. And I guess I post them here just in case they might possibly resonate with somebody at ksite. But it never seems to happen.....nevertheless...

Here are two more comments about "Family Remains" that really said it for me.

In my opinion! I much preferred the show going back to it's simpler one case per episode and then it's done formula, as apposed to the super heavy-weighted subject matter that we've had the first half of this season.
Amen. This what we need more of. Just two brother tracking down urban legends on dark backroad america. No Ruby, no seals, no nothing. Just the boys, a car, and a case..

I mean I can't believe it's thursday already and I'm just really worried about tonight's episode. To say that I have been unhappy with the storyarcs and new characters this season is pretty much the understatement of the century. It's common knowledge that I hate this epic war and the stupid 66 seals crap...and GOD Ruby? I have always hated that ***** ever since forever. Add Anna to that list and this new crap abut Dean's time in hell. *sighs*

What happened to the show about two brothers who ride the back roads of america, fighting the supernatural with a rock salt loaded shotgun, knives dipped in dead man's blood and exorcism chants? What happened to hearing the boys complain about the cheap motel rooms and greasy fast food and the occasional person mistaking them for a gay couple? What happened to ending the episodes with the guys in the car driving down an endless stretch of highway listening to classic rock?

I want it back. And others may say that if they were to still be doing that now, there would be no "evolution to the story and/or characters". Well I say I'm sick of hearing that. I would take that over what we have now. It was original it was interesting......it was so unlike anything TV shows have ever written.

Now we have the same old apocolyptic, "grey shades of good and evil" CRAP. *sighs* Last week was a welcome return to the original Supernatural that we have always known, but I'm seriously afraid for my sanity this week........I think it might be back to the crap they have been spewing out all throughout season 4.
