Ok after writing a few one shots I decided to give a serial a shot. This will be a Clois story and is AU. I don't anything nor do I profit in anyway off of this story. Here is a teaser and the first chapter. Enjoy!!

Last Daughter of Earth

Instead of Krypton being destroyed by a supernova star it was Earth that faced total destruction. General Sam Lane and his wife Ella placed their infant daughter Lois Lane in a primitive space prototype that was rejected by government in hopes she would live and keep the human race alive. Three years she traveled through space crashing into the planet Krypton where she is found by Lara El, her six year old niece Kara, and two year old son Kal-El. Jor-El takes the young child to the council who immediately want to terminate the child in fear of what she could mean to the genetically perfect Kryptonians but Jor-El stops the madness and his brother Zor-El adopts Lois raising her as his own. When a wide spread, unexpected, pandemic raises through Krypton years later the cure for this disease is found in the blood of the once labeled genetically “weak” Lois Lane. Will she be able to save them?

Chapter 1

A streak a fire shot across the sky barreling toward the ground. Lara El grabbed her two year old son Kal-El and took off running for cover.

“Hurry Kara,” she shouted back at her six year old niece. The three had been enjoying exploring the outer realm of Krypton when Kal-El had spotted the red streak headed toward them. They ran and took shelter inside of an ice cave. The object crashed with a loud boom, rattling the icy ground. Lara had barely enough time to shield Kara and little Kal and brace herself for the impact.

“Are you alright,” she asked Kara.

“Yes Aunt Lara,” Kara responded getting up from her perch and making her way out of the cave to explore.

“Kal,” Lara looked down at the smiling toddler in her arms that seemed unaffected by the event, “Kara wait for me,” she said once she noticed the girl leaving the cave. Lara pulled her and Kal up and exited the cave making their way over to the impact zone. A huge crater had been created into the ice where the object had landed. Ice debris was everywhere and a cold, dusty cloud had surrounded the area. They got closer and could see whatever had landed was metal and flashing bright lights.

“Aunt Lara,” said Kara excitedly, “it looks like ship,” she shouted and took off running toward the small metal looking dome.

“Kara,” should Lara, “be careful.”

“Don’t worry Aunt Lara,” the girl replied and at her voice the dome opened and inside lay nestled a small little girl, “Oh!!! Aunt Lara!!! Hurry!!”

She hoisted Kal on her hip and took off at a slight run toward the ship. Once closer she could see what had Kara screaming with excitement. There inside the ship wrapped in a blue blanket was a little girl who looked no older than Kal-El. “Oh my Rao,” replied Lara.

At the sound of the loud voices the little child’s hazel eyes popped opened and she looked around intrigued.

“Would you look at that,” said Lara as she sat Kal down and reached in to release the child from the restraints that had her confined.

“Mine,” little Kal-El said once he saw the girl.

“No silly it’s a little girl,” Kara said to Kal.

Lara picked the little girl up, who was naked save for the blue blanket and cuddled her close. The little girl gazed intently at Lara and then smiled, her little hazel eyes sparkling.

“You are such a beauty, I wonder where you came from,” said Lara holding the child.

“Mine Mommy,” said Kal pointing to the girl.

“No sweetie she is not a play toy,” Lara replied. “Come on everyone we can’t stay out here let’s get back to the house and let Jor-El know what we’ve found,” Lara said standing up holding the child.

“Mine!” Kal said again holding up his arms to his mother.

“Kara can you help your cousin?” Lara asked Kara.

“Sure Aunt Lara, come along Kal,” Kara said coming over and taking Kal’s hand.

“No Mine,” Kal said more insistently and started to climb up his mother’s dress.

“Kal-El stop that, she is not your pet,” Lara said down to the little dark haired blue eyed boy. As she pulled away Kal started pouting, “Come on everyone.”

The four of them made their way into the inner city, Kara helping Kal along as he stumbled to keep his balance pointing to his mother repeating, “mine” and Lara carrying the small alien child. Lara had no idea where the child had come from but she hoped Jor-El would be able to provide some answers. Jor-El was a brilliant mind and she knew he could solve this mysterious event. Lara cuddled the child closer who had not once seemed scared. She was such a good little girl. Lara didn’t know how any parent could possibly part with their child.

After long time I'm posting a story. It's not BETA checked, will have grammar & spelling errors. Please forgive me for any errors I might have made.

I do not own any thing. Just my ideas I have added.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One And Only

She still remembers when he asked her out, she laughed & turned down his offer. HE who stole her heart then broke it into million pieces, he who was her knight in shining armor, he who she thought will be her world, he who left her like dust when his ex came back to his world he was alone once but now who has become someone else’s love, he who she will always loved will love forever , even though she will not get his love.

Now she is seated alone here trying hard to think what to do, where to go. Sure she cannot go back where once was her home. He will be there. She took & dialed one person who was her role model but then she disconnected. Then she dialed her only blood relation after her role model, her sister. Though they were not that close, thought they were not best sisters she always can count on her only sister. Whom she raised as her own baby. She talked to her sister she was happy more than happy that it went well than she expected. She could not count on her favorite cousin who WAS more close to her than her own sister, because she is his best friend after all.

She stood among the crowd waiting for her rescuer. Small smile appeared in her face when she saw slim figure came towards her. Both did not say anything.

She gave a assuring hug to me to let know that I am not alone. She knew very well about me, of course she is my sister & I am hers. I know I will be ok. I hope I will be ok.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAST

Her mind flew back to time she took courage when she said she loved him. He laughed just like she did to him. She did not know that will hurt her that much. She did not mean to do that to him. HE was the one who left her heart shattered to million pieces, she then knew. Knew that she will never ever have a chance, she was wrong he came back to her but she was too stubborn & too hurt to accept his love & was too scared that he will leave again. So she pretended. He left so hurt, so down & so lonely & sad. But it was needed to happen. She had to do that. So she did it.

After few days he started to date some blonde name Helen, she was pretty, smart & rich but she was not the match for him. She knew that & she knew he knew it too. After a few weeks he proposed to his new girl friend.

Being the gentleman he invited her to his engagement party. Still she can see his love for her but both were too stupid & stubborn to accept. So she went for sake of her undying love for him.

She could not stand so she decided now or never so she knocked on his door & smiled & him. She took a deep breath & expressed her love for him. She accepted her mistakes & also first time in her life she apologized for her actions. She was surprised for his reaction, instead of hugging her he laughed at her, he laughed at her love, he laughed at her feelings., he lauged at HER. She felt her world is spinning. SO she left as soon as possible. She could not stand it. But she also could not think to answer one question he asked her. “My wedding is tomorrow. Why are you telling me this now Lois? Don’t you think it is too late”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRESENT

So she is here now alone thinking & crying. She knew now he was someone else’s lover, husband. She shivered when she though about the word HUSBAND . It should have been her not Helen. She did not regret loving him. Her love for him will be there in her heart forever & always.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was three days that she has left everything & everyone & here is a new city with her sister. Three days her love has become someone else’s husband. But that is how the life is. She was happy that she had at least her sister. Is was her sister who was her strength now, thanks to her sister she was becoming all right. Not that her heart ever will be ok but some what ok. She poured the coffee & headed to the glass balcony which was so lonely just like her heart. She hears a knock thinking it was Lucy she opens goes to open the door. To her surprise it was a delivery man. She signed & accept bunch of flower & some parcel not bothered to look at it she tossed it to the couch & sits next to it. After an hour she hears another knock. She get frustrated & ignore but the knock continues so she opens the door. Her world freezed & she holds her breath.

Two words ‘Hay Lois!’

He is here. Why would he come here? How the heck he knows I was here. She makes up her mood & smiles at him & welcome. He must be on his honeymoon. To think the destiny was so cruel to meet him with his wife after she wanted to get away from HIM.
He smiles & rushed to hug her so tight as if he missed her. She cant control her emotions so she return the hug. After for a while both let go & he smiles.

She listen to his each & every word. ‘I called off the wedding.’ She was sure that she was dreaming. ‘I could not marry Helen. I didn’t love her. I love you. Only you.’

The words she was dying to hear she heard it, he said that . He does love her. She was about to reply when she felt someone pulled & plant the best & fabulous kiss on her. THEREFORE, she returned the kiss by pulling him to her.

“I love you too Clark, my smallville’ she says. Both laugh like idiots. He says after she left he called Helen & called off the wedding, once he did he had searched her everywhere but could not find. But he had not given up search. She thanks the God that he did not stop.

Then he surprises her by taking her on flying & telling her the secret about his birth parents. But she does not see any difference in him. So she kisses him to prove that no matter what she loves him. She is even happy & surprised that he could never tell Helen the truth. Because it was HER always the ONE & ONLY.

THE END for now

-------------
Thank you so much for reading.

Greetings. I wrote this one shot after being inspired by a piece of music from JJ Abrams Star Trek film. I hope you all enjoy it.

The music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zjl-...feature=relmfu

He knew this day would inevitably come. The day when the catastrophe would be too much and a great sacrifice would be needed. It had started two weeks earlier, when scientists discovered a giant asteroid the size of the state of Alaska heralding towards earth. Calculations were made and it was determined the asteroid would strike the eastern seaboard of the United States, taking out all of the east coast, then sending a wave of death headed towards Europe and Africa. The debris from the fall out would send the planet into the equivalent of a ‘nuclear winter’ for decades. Life as many on planet Earth had known would cease to exist and none were guaranteed survival. The scientists and world governments did not hesitate to come to Superman immediately. After all, he was the world’s greatest hero; if anyone could save them, he could.

Superman had heard their pleas and flew into space to observe this moving death. He quickly discovered it was no mere asteroid; it was indeed the last remnant of Krypton. Still, for Superman, his resolve stayed firm. He vowed to use all his powers to find a way to save his adopted home world. He knew he could simply fly into space and break up the asteroid. However, that amount of kryptonite would surely kill him, and his comrades, the Justice League, refused to let him sacrifice himself.

“Clark,” said Bruce, “Be reasonable here, there are other ways.”

“Earth doesn’t have enough time,” Clark had argued.

“Then let me go, Kal-El,” said Diana. “You are too important here and have too many depending on you.”

“Diana, even though you are strong, we both know it wouldn’t be enough,” said Clark. “We can’t risk the fragments causing worldwide damages.”

“Clark, there is time,” began Oliver. “Bruce and I are combining our resources and Lucius Fox is heading this attempt. There isn’t a more brilliant man alive on Earth.”

“Clark, I implore you, if not us and Earth,” Bruce paused for effect, “then think of Lois,” he paused, “and your future.”

Clark nodded grimly and lowered his head as slight moisture gathered in his eyes. If his friends saw it, they didn’t say anything. When he raised his head, he said, “My wife is the strongest of any person I know,” the other hero’s nodded in agreement, “if there were no other way, she’d understand.”

“Yes, Clark, she would,” Oliver agreed. “But we are telling you there might be another way.”
************************************************** ****************************

Clark had left Watch Tower and headed to his new pent house apartment he shared with the love of his life, Lois Lane. He came in through the balcony window to find her sitting on the bed with her lap top, typing away at something. The slight breeze caught her attention and she looked up and smiled. Clark felt his heart constrict - this wasn’t going to be easy. He saw her smile start to fade.

“I know that look,” she began and she placed the lap top on the night stand, leapt from the bed, and came to embrace him. “What is it, Smallville?”

He held onto her tightly, tears threatened to seep through. Why was life so unfair at times? He quickly dashed those thoughts from his mind as they would do him no good now. He pulled back just long enough to sweep her into his arms and lay the most passionate kiss he’d given anyone ever on her lips as he floated them back to bed.

He lay in bed, with Lois tucked into his side, devouring her mouth as a man devouring water in the desert. He never wanted to let her go, but he knew he had to tell her about the severity of the situation. He pulled back and tucked the silky rich strands of hair behind her ear.

“Lois, the asteroid...” he began. “It’s kryptonite.”

Silence as Lois digested the latest.

“And it’s still headed this way?” she asked.

“Yes, but faster than the scientists calculated,” he stated. “It’ll be here in four days.”

“Oh, Clark,” she said holding him closer, “what are you going to do?”

“Bruce and Oliver have their scientists working on a rocket that can be piggybacked off of a 767,” Clark said. “The hope is the rocket will have enough pay load to obliterate the asteroid and I won’t be needed.”

“I know this is selfish of me to say, Clark,” Lois said tracing his ‘S’, “but that is what I want too. Our lives are just starting and with what’s coming in the next few months, I kind of want you around,” she finished with a smile.

“I know, Lois, I want to be here with you more than anything,” Clark said, kissing her forehead, “especially now.” They lay in silence, savoring the presence of each other. They knew the world would come calling soon enough, but for now, they allowed themselves the moment to delight in each other.

“Lois, what if it’s not enough?” Clark asked. “What if…” he trailed off.

He felt Lois swallow and heard her heart beat nearly shatter. He knew her next words would come at great personal pain for her.

“Then you will do as you have always done,” she began, the tremble in her voice betraying her strength. “You will save us,” she cupped his cheek and looked into his eyes. “And I will love you and be so very proud of my hero.”

“Lois,” he said crashing his lips to hers as he allowed himself to shed tears of longing.

As he released her, he said with a broken voice, “I’m so sorry, Lo,” he pleaded. “I never wanted this for you.”

“Clark, stop,” she demanded and Clark saw her eyes were shining. “I have always known what could happen and it changes nothing,” she said with resolve. “The only tragedy would have been if we’d never found each other. Just a moment with you, loving you, is worth a thousand years of loneliness."

“You are my strength, Lois,” he told her firmly. “I can be Superman because of you.”

“And you are mine, Clark,” she said smiling. “So if that moment comes, I know you will be able to do the impossible.”

Their lips met again and passion ignited. Tomorrow, they would face whatever came, but for just tonight, they would forget and celebrate the love they shared.
************************************************** ****************************

Bruce and Oliver had spared no expense. The rocket was ready and the best airliner was donated from Bruce’s own personal collection. A few modifications would be made to ensure it could handle the altitude and launch. A team of scientists was on aboard, and much to Clark’s dismay, so was his wife, Lois Lane. The event had to be documented and out of all reporters, Lois had been chosen. Clark’s heart had swelled with pride when learning, but as always, his fierce protectiveness had also taken hold as well. Lois had soothed him with a kiss.

He now hovered as his alter ego over Earth, watching as the plane made its upward ascent into the outer stratosphere to launch the rocket. So far, everything had been going right on schedule and everyone seemed confident Superman wouldn’t be needed. When the scientists had learned the asteroids threat to Superman, it was as if the whole world came together to develop ways to save their favorite hero. Superman had been touched, he never knew he meant so much to them. He knew if this attempt failed, he wouldn’t hesitate to do what was needed, what he was born for. He knew the team of heroes he had helped assemble would be there in his absence to offer guidance and protection.

Hope filled his chest as the plane came to view and he heard that ignition was beginning. He saw the flare of the rocket and waited for it to shoot off. However, at that moment, disaster struck. The platform clamps malfunctioned and the rocket wasn’t lifting off of the plane. Panic ensued within the plane, and the rocket boosters were causing the plane to lose control.

He wasted no time in flying in to save the people on the plane. He used his super breath to blow out the rocket engines. He knew that once the engines had been ignited it would take too long to repair and relaunch, thus his fate was sealed. However, he still had time for one more save. He glided down and took hold of the plane, keeping it steady as the pilots worked to stabilize the engines. From the small cockpit, he saw the lead pilot give a salute and he let go of the plane.

He let the plane gently fly on as he looked at the windows and saw her. He flew up to her window and gently stroked the glass in front of her face. He saw her tears and they burnt a whole in his heart. For a moment, he allowed himself to look at her. He remembered every moment they had shared and relived each one. He would love her even in death.

He took in her face for the last time. The pouty lips that he would kiss at night with passion, the corner she’d bite when engrossed in a story, and formed a smile that was just for him. Her long thick chocolate brown hair as it framed her face. He remembered how it felt to run his fingers through it and longed for just one more caress. He’d never forget the way it brushed against his face or chest as they lay snuggled in bed. He finally lingered on her soft hazel orbs as they looked at him with pride and love. His wife amazed him. At this moment they both knew what was coming, but instead of tears and angst, his wife willed him to do what only he could. He would treasure this look and it would be the last image on his mind. He smiled softly at her and mouthed the words, ‘I love you’ and watched as she smiled back, repeating the phrase and adding, “Always” at the end. He was now ready. One last look at his heart and soul and he turned to meet the oncoming challenge with renewed passion. It wasn’t just the world he was saving or even Lois; it was the hope of a better tomorrow and the promise of a brighter future. He passed the moon faster than he’d ever flown before.
************************************************** ****************************

On board the jet, the scientists were frantically adjusting equipment after the near disaster, oblivious to the tender moment that was just shared between the reporter and hero.

“Well, we will have to land and repair the rockets,” said one of the scientists.

“Get everyone available; I want to be ready in five hours,” said Mr. Fox.

“But sir…” began a bald scientist.

“I refuse to accept anything less,” responded Mr. Fox.

“There’s no need,” said a younger scientist, causing all conversation to pause. “Look,” he pointed to
the recalibrated monitor.

“Is that...” said a scientist.

“Superman,” said Lucius.

“But its kryptonite,” said the younger scientist.

“He knows the window is tight,” began Lucius, “He’s sacrificing…” but he couldn’t finished.

The jet was silent as Lucius Fox turned to Lois Lane, only to find her standing tall and proud, but with tears in her eyes.

“It’s what the world needs,” Lois stated.
************************************************** ****************************

At a rural farm in Kansas, a lady with graying hair sits on her sofa, watching the events of the attempted asteroid destruction on her television. She listens to the newscasters but she already knows what will unfold.

Yes, folks, it seems that there was a malfunction with the rocket launcher, but Superman thankfully has saved the day once again. According to scientists at the base in Dallas, Superman is now flying out to meet the asteroid head on. God Speed Superman.

The woman felt tears in her eyes, but instead of sadness feeling her heart, she was filled with immense pride. This is why he had come to us, this is what we raised him to do. We taught him to do the right thing no matter what. Oh, Jonathan she thought you’d be do proud of him.

She watched the scenes on screen and after a few moments said to no one, “My son.”
************************************************** ****************************

At Watch Tower, they all looked on at the monitors. Shame filled them that they weren’t enough, that it hadn’t been enough and now the best of all had to make the ultimate sacrifice. Still, their hearts were filled with courage to carry on. He had entrusted them, and they would not fail him! His memory would live on in the manner in which they defended what was right. They each made vows to protect and honor his legacy. They watched as the last satellite image came in of Superman flying off in space and each choked back on their emotions.

Out of a corner emerged a gruff voice filled with emotion, “Our Hero.”

Another added strongly, “Our Brother.”
************************************************** ****************************

Young Jimmy Olsen watched the broadcast from a bar in downtown Metropolis. He was sad he didn’t get to get on board the plane with Ms. Lane, but was determined to cover the reaction of the crowd with vigor. His heart had leaped when the rocket didn’t fire and the plane began to lose control. Relief filled him as he watched Superman come to aid. He was young, but he had discovered things he didn’t feel like he was supposed to know. So he had vowed to never reveal what he had learned. He looked on now as others cheered when it was announced Superman was approaching the asteroid. He smiled slightly at the screen and said, “Got get’em, big blue.”
************************************************** ****************************

She knew the risk in sharing his life but it hadn’t stopped her. Lois had no regrets and would live it all again. She would miss him. She would miss his warm smile and his chuckle when she said something clever. She would miss teasing him about his flannel and home remedies. She would miss him teasing her about drinking too much coffee and fussing over her not eating enough. She would miss his soft kisses on her lips. She would miss his arms holding her tight at night. She would miss his warmth, his heart, his courage, his strength. She watched the dot get closer to the large mass on the monitor and knew she would mourn later. For now she would find the strength to give him one final gift as he saved the world from destruction. She knew he would hear her, he always said he could no matter what. Bravely she whispered, “I’ll love you forever, Clark Kent, my beloved husband.”
************************************************** ****************************

He saw the asteroid getting closer and slowly started to feel the effects of the poison within. He wouldn’t stop, no matter what; he would see it through to the bitter end. He willed his body to endure for the sake of all. He set his sights on the middle of the rock and with all he had left, accelerated onward.

He felt the kryptonite burning his body, wanting him to give up, but he couldn’t. Out of the vastness of space came her voice of love, calling his name, and he found the strength within. Suddenly, his life flashed before his eyes and he focused on the good moments - finding two people upside down in a truck in the middle of a corn field, the love they surrounded him with, the friendships he forged, the sassy hazel eyed girl dumping him in a tank, a shared dance, a sweet kiss in a crowded bullpen, a proposal, a walk down an aisle, a life of love. He regretted nothing and with renewed strength, he barreled forward into the asteroid, dissolving it to dust in his final act as the greatest hero the world had ever known.
************************************************** ****************************

8 Years Later

Lois Lane sat on the porch swing beside Martha Kent as they talked about the recent comings and goings of life in Metropolis and the Dailey Planet. After the death of Superman, the world had united in a way it never had in its history. Everyone wanted to honor their fallen hero, who had saved them, by being the best that they could. When someone threatened the peace that came with such a high cost, countries banned together and met the threat head on. Heroes were still needed from time to time and the world had embraced them for the leaders they were. Thanks to Superman, they no longer had to live in shadows but were honored and respected for their good work.

“Still with all that has happened, Lex still is up to his old ways,” Lois was saying.

“Sad that he just can’t let go,” said Martha.

“Yes, world conquest seems to still be his greatest ambition,” Lois stated. “But it doesn’t matter how many bribes he tries to make, people don’t seem to be persuaded by him and that frustrates him to end.”

“I still can’t believe he tried to kill you,” said Martha.

“Oh, I can,” laughed Lois. “It was only my 43rd expose on him.”

“Well, hopefully this one gets him sentenced to jail for the rest of his life,” Martha firmly stated.

“That’s my hope,” Lois said.

Just then they heard a small voice full of pride and excitement coming from near the barn.

“Hey, Mom, look what I can do,” said the voice coming closer to the front porch.

Lois turned to look at the spectacle and gasped, quickly standing up and rushing to the banister. Martha, curious as to what drew such a reaction from Lois, turned to look as well and was just as startled. No words came from her mouth as she stood looking at the sight.

There, in her driveway stood eight year old Christopher Clark Kent, with his father’s black hair and piercing blue eyes and mother’s excited grin. The boy was carrying the family tractor over his head as if it were made of card board.

“Chris, put the tractor down,” Lois finally said.

The boy lowered the tractor.

“Sorry, mommy,” said Chris, biting the corner of his mouth. “I just wanted to show you how strong I was.”

“It’s ok, mommy is very proud of you, son,” Lois said with a smile. “Just be careful with the tractor, honey, it’s very special.”

“Because it was daddy's,” Chris said.

“That’s right,” Lois said. “Now take it and put it back where you found it and then we’ll have some of Nana’s apple pie.”

“Oh, boy,” the little boy said, picking the tractor up carefully and marching back to the barn.

“I’d say you handled that well,” came the voice of Martha Kent.

“Well, he is the son of Superman, so I guess I should be used to strange acts,” Lois said.

“Of all the legacies Clark left behind, that is the greatest,” Martha said. “The promise of a brighter future, the hope of Superman, and I have no doubts that one day, he’ll be as great as his father was.”

“No, he’ll be greater,” stated Lois with a smile, “and one day, I will tell him about all his father died for.”

At that moment, a little boy came running across the drive way and straight to his mother’s arms. Lois held her child tightly to her, before placing a kiss on his forehead.

“My little Superman,” she said proudly and turned to walk with him and Mrs. Kent into the house for some apple pie.

Hello everyone! I have another fic for you! :)

This fic is entirely from Lois' POV, though not in first person. It starts at the very end of Stiletto, and follows the Doomsday arc. Assume that what happened in canon, happened. I reimagined what could have happened to Lois during that time and how her relationship with the Blur and Clark may have developed. There is one surprise character who I hope will satisfy an annoyance we all had in the original arc...

At the end of the fic, I'll post a link to 'Blurring the lines.' This story is in 5 parts.

Enjoy! And comments are much appreciated! :D
~Part 1~

“My editor would kill me. But I don’t want this story. What I’ve really been wondering is – what is it you need?”

Lois replayed the conversation in her mind, surprising even herself that she hadn’t wanted to push the Blur for a story. She hadn’t realized it until the words were out of her mouth, but what she really cared about was understanding him. How did he manage to do it every day, saving people—and on more than one occasion, saving her? Each time it had happened, she had tried to remember the exact moment, the ephemeral second when he had held her in his arms, snatching her away from a bullet or an out-of-control car. She could barely remember those whispers of sensation on her skin: strong arms wrapped around her, all too briefly. She had really only felt safety and comfort… Sometimes she thought she could remember him standing over her, gently brushing back her hair as she fought her way back from unconsciousness… but he would always disappear before she could confirm his presence.

She realized early on that his anonymity was for the best. Lois was known for taking risks in general, but if the criminal element of Metropolis thought she knew the Blur personally—she would immediately become a target. She had understood the reasons for his secrecy, and yet had quickly embraced the idea of having her own personal hero—even if she could never meet him.

But she had sensed something so—fundamentally good about being saved by him, something about the man himself drew her to defend him in the pages of the Daily Planet whenever she could. Still, the impressions he left on her, those moments of absolute comfort in his arms, compelled her to want to know him, even against her better judgment. So she became eager for any contact with the Blur, even if it was only through a phone booth and a voice scrambler.

Because, what she wondered most of all was – why had the Blur chosen to look after her?
And why had he finally agreed to talk to her?

She realized and said as much to the Blur, that he was probably lonely, unable to share his secrets with anyone. And yet, she knew he was a force for good. If he weren’t, he could have easily abused his powers and done real harm to Metropolis. But instead… he had taken upon himself the burden of becoming Metropolis’ sworn protector.

She wondered why he had taken an interest in her at all. And that trust made her realize she could and would never use her connection to the Blur for a story, unless it was to help him. She didn’t want to expose the Blur or share his secrets with the world. For once, she didn’t want to expose the truth and splash it across the pages of the Daily Planet—and that was what stunned her, what kept her staring at the paper that the Blur had magically dropped at her feet with her invitation to talk to him.

The Blur was so much more than a story.

Because the Blur was her hero…

~\S/~

The next morning, Lois couldn’t keep the grin off of her face, even as she sat down to get to work. She had indulged in fantasizing about who the Blur really was as she had gone off to sleep last night, and the magic of that first phone call hadn’t worn off, even with the morning sun. She had no idea when she might hear from the Blur again, but she hoped it would be soon.

Lois’ practical side warned that she was playing with fire. She didn’t really know who he was, and yet, she implicitly trusted him. How could she not? After saving her bacon so many times, the least she could do was give him the benefit of the doubt. She knew he was one of the good guys.

Yet there was another danger here, too. One that she was already teetering close to the edge of doing---falling for him. Even Lois scoffed at her ridiculous notion that she could love an invisible hero—yet, she knew, there was a part of her that was inexplicably drawn to him.

As she chomped on a maple-glazed donut, her mind started wandering… She wondered what the Blur actually looked like. Again, those too brief moments in his arms came back to her – she was certain he was tall, broad-shouldered… She imagined he was ---

“Hey Lois,” Clark said, setting down some papers on his desk, snatching her out of her daydream. He flashed today’s paper at her, pointing to their story on sacking the money launderers the other night.
Miraculously Lois had managed to stop her Stiletto story from going to press—but they still ended up with a good headline. “Looks like you made deadline,” he said, with a teasing smile. “And no Stiletto marks to cover up.”

“Ha, ha,” she said humorously, slightly irked that Clark had interrupted her Blur fantasy. But then she remembered the price of her Stiletto foolishness-- Clark getting in the way of a bullet meant for her, and she backed down.

“Donut?” she asked, pushing the box towards him. She felt herself blush guiltily for a moment, dying to ask how he was feeling, but unable to utter her thoughts.

“Sure,” he said, reaching for the box. He didn’t seem encumbered by his wound, but she still cried out for him.

“Clark! Be careful!” she cried out. “Don’t want you to risk opening up that—“ she swallowed, unable to say the word. “Just take it easy, okay?”

He nodded, and scrunched his brow in what looked like slight pain.

Lois looked away, and searched for another topic. She glanced reflexively at her cell phone. How would the Blur get her a message? How would she know to go to the phone booth again? She decided she would go at 10 tonight, just like last night, in case he wanted to call her.

“Expecting a call?” Clark asked, with an unexplained amused grin on his face.

Lois felt her cheeks flush, “Y—I mean, it’s none of your business, Smallville.”

He lifted his hands in mock surrender. “Sorry I asked.”

She relented a bit and gave him a small smile. “No, I’m sorry, Clark. Just—a little jumpy after last night I guess.”

“Lois, even though I’m relieved that Stiletto has hung up her boots, I’m glad you were there last night. If you hadn’t shown up when you had… well, I don’t know what would have happened.”

She gave him a genuine smile this time, “Any time, Smallville,” she said, taking another bite of her maple donut.

A new email popped into her account. Like the dozens she received a day, this one was from one of her police friends giving her a heads up.

“Bruno Mannheim to be released on bail…” she read aloud. “Oh hell no. I don’t care who he is-- owner of the Ace of Clubs or not-- he should not get away with what he did to you that easy!”

“Lois, where are you going?” Clark asked in a warning voice, seeing her make a move to grab her coat.

“To talk to the DA. Ray Sacks has some explaining to do about his cozy relationship with Metropolis’ mob bosses!”

“Lois, let me go with you?” He laid a gentle hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off.

“So you can slow me down? I don’t think so, Inspector Gadget. Just keep the home fires burning. I’ll be back soon enough with a headline,” she said, throwing on a scarf as she turned towards the elevators.

~\S/~

Lois felt her blood beginning to boil with anger as she stepped into the Metropolis Court House. She had considered Ray Sacks to be the makings of a great story if she could prove his dirty dealings. She’d been collecting a notebook on him for months.

But this was going too far. Not only had Mannheim been arrested for creating counterfeit money, but he’d been laundering it through the Ace of Clubs. Not to mention the personal assault charges that Jimmy had pressed. Clark, the sweet guy that he was, said he was just glad to get out of there alive.

But if Smallville wouldn’t stand up for himself, then Lois would have to do it for him.

“I’m here to see the District Attorney, Ray Sacks,” she demanded unceremoniously to the secretary.

The young buxom blonde looked up from filing her nails, an unapologetic look of contempt on her face. “Ray Sacks don’t see no one unannounced,” she said, with a heavy accent that indicated she was born and raised near Suicide Slum.

Lois narrowed her glare and lowered her voice, demanding blondie’s attention. “I’m not just anyone. I’m—“

“Lois Lane,” she turned as she heard her name spoken behind her in smooth tones.

“Ray Sacks,” she snapped in retort, facing him with her hands on her hips in defiance.

“I’ve been wondering when you’d pay me a visit,” he said with a lift of his eyebrow.

“I’m here to know why Mannheim got released on bail. There was plenty charged against him to keep him in jail for life.”

Patronizingly, Sacks draped his arm around Lois’ shoulders, and she resisted the urge to shake him off.
He steered her towards his office. “Miss Lane, the dealings of a city is complicated business. Sometimes, what seems a poor choice is really what’s best for all involved.”

Lois shrugged him off her and turned to face him squarely. “You’re telling me that assault and money laundering and God knows what else, gets a free ride in this city? I know you’re playing for the wrong team, Sacks, and one of these days, I’m going to prove it,” she said boldly.

His face turned serious, as he stepped closer to her. “I’d back off if I were you, Miss Lane. Sometimes, children who put their noses where they don’t belong get hurt.” He turned away from her, and picked up a cigar and cutter from his desk. “Now, get out of my office,” he said, not looking at her.

Lois, feeling more threatened than she wanted to admit, left the office--but not before she had scored a picture with her mini-camera of some plans that had been lying on his desk.

Sacks didn’t know that he was playing with fire when he decided to tangle with the great Lois Lane.

~\S/~

“Jimmy!” Lois called out as soon as she hit the bullpen.

She made a beeline to her desk, taking off her coat and scarf on the way. She noticed that Clark had gone, but suppressed a sigh of disappointment. She didn’t need him here anyway, getting in the way of her pursuing her next great story.

“Jimmy!” she called again, this time with some exasperation that he wasn’t responding right away.

At last, he came around the corner, a camera dangling around his neck. “What is it, Lois? Karl in Travel wanted me to go with him—“

“Forget Karl. I need you here,” she passed him her phone. “I got this picture, but it’s not as clear as I need it to be. I need your professional eye to see if you can get a better resolution on it.”

Jimmy hesitated a moment, and then shrugged his shoulders, giving in as he always did to Lois’ requests.

“Get your USB connector. We’ll have a look at it in my work room.”

~\S/~

Some thirty minutes later, Lois was losing patience with the camera software Jimmy was playing with. “Maybe this was a bad idea. Maybe I didn’t get anything good,” she said with disappointment.

“No, hold on. The angle was a little off, but I think… there. Still a little fuzzy but—“ Jimmy glanced at Lois. “What is it?”

“It’s the facility under the Ace of Clubs – where you and Clark--,” she couldn’t finish, remembering how Clark had dodged in front of a bullet to save her. “Anyway, it’s the plans for that place. I think the DA knew about it all along. Of course, he’s working with Mannheim! …Or for him? I wonder which way it goes? Who pulls the strings?” she said, thinking aloud. She turned to Jimmy decisively. “Jimmy, we need to go back to that facility tonight. We need to see if it’s operational again or if there are any clues—“

Jimmy lifted his hands in refusal, “Oh no, Lois. I’m not getting involved. Besides, what good would it do to go snooping around there? Wasn’t Mannheim sent to prison?”

Lois relished his reaction as she shook her head. “That’s why I went to the DA’s office. Mannheim was released on bail. I smell a rat. And I’m pretty sure his name is Ray Sacks.”

Jimmy sighed, sensing that Lois was on the verge of getting herself into some more hot water. “Lois, please just let this story drop. We all had a rough night last night, and your whole Stiletto thing… haven’t you had enough adventure for one week?”

“Little do you know, Jimmy. The week’s just gotten started,” she said, hitting the print button on her newly edited photo.

“Just… be careful,” Jimmy said helplessly.

“I’m always careful,” she said, getting up to leave after the photo printed. “Thanks for your help, Jimmy.”

~\S/~

Lois didn’t run into Clark the whole rest of the day, for which she was almost relieved. She knew if she breathed a word to him what she was up to, he’d try and stop her. Clark was great to work with, but he could be a little overprotective at times.

Still, she didn’t mean to go into this completely alone. She hoped to talk to the Blur that evening before she went to the Ace of Clubs, just in case she needed some backup.

Only a little slither of guilt crept into her heart, worrying that the Blur would think she was making him her bodyguard. But still, if anything happened to her, she knew she could count on him to get her out of a jam.

She got to the phone booth she had first talked to him at 9:55. There was no pre-set plan, but she hoped that he’d call…

She waited patiently---

Until 10:01.

“Please call,” she sighed, suddenly worrying about chasing down this story all alone. Maybe she should have waited until she could have spoken to Clark about it or even Oliver…

The phone suddenly sprang to life, jarring her out of her thoughts.

“Hello?” she answered. “Is it really you?”

“Lois, how did you know I’d call?” the Blur asked with some surprise.

She shrugged her shoulders, but then said, “I didn’t. I just hoped you would. I’m glad to see you didn’t disappoint me.”

“Lois, is there some reason you wanted to speak to me?”

“Well, actually, yes. I mean—I admit that talking to you is a little overwhelming, but I just feel—that I can trust you.”

“I appreciate that, Lois. I know I can trust you as well.”

She smiled, and then brought herself back to the reason she had wanted to speak with him. “Here’s the deal: my friend was shot last night. He’s okay, but the guy that shot him was released on bail. I think he’s working with the DA and I mean to expose them both.”

“Lois, that sounds dangerous—“

“Which is why I’m telling you what I plan to do. I saw pictures of the plans of the facility that Clark—my partner—got shot in last night.”

“Partner?” the Blur interrupted, with some amusement in his voice. “I thought you worked alone?”

Lois realized she had misspoken a bit, and tried to backpedal Clark’s rank in her life. “Well, he was my intern. But he’s quite good at his job – better than anyone expected him to be, actually. Myself included… and, well, we work well together. So sometimes partner, how’s that?”

“Just tell me what you plan to do.”

“Right. Well, I plan on heading back to that facility and see if it’s operational again. If it is, it will definitely prove, along with my photo, that the DA is involved with Mannheim!” she finished triumphantly.

The Blur suddenly sounded very worried. “Lois – please, don’t go back there. It’s too dangerous.”

“You could be my wingman,” she gently suggested. “I mean, I’m sure you’re busy and all—but if I need the backup?”

“Lois, I—can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?” she asked, a mounting fear growing in the pit of her stomach.

“Both. Lois, I’m sorry. There’s a reason—“ he stopped, seemingly hesitant.

“You can trust me, I promise.”

“Look, just promise you won’t actually go inside?” he said, changing the subject slightly.

“I may. Depends. I need to get the necessary incriminating photos. But if you’re that concerned, I’ll be careful.”

“I’d rather you not go at all, Lois. I can’t always protect you.”

“I’m not asking you to. I—I just can’t let this mobster get off Scott free. Not after what he did to Clark. Smallville’s too nice of a guy to do anything about it. But not me.”

“Smallville,” he repeated softly, and she could almost hear the smile in his voice.

“Yeah, it’s sort of a pet name that stuck. Clark is… well, let’s just say that it’s not Smallville when he’s not there.”

“Lois, I know you mean well, and it’s admirable to want to fix the injustices in the world, just please promise me, you’ll be careful.”

“Of course I will… and, should I expect another call from you tomorrow night?” she asked, trying to keep her hopefulness out of her voice.

“I can’t always promise, Lois. But I will try. Some nights we may miss each other. And Lois?”

“Yes?”

“I’ll always do my best to watch over you.”

~\S/~

Lois climbed to the roof of outbuilding that she had swung in through the glass ceiling of the night before. A large gray tarp was over the area, so she couldn’t see directly inside. But she could hear someone speaking in the room below. It was definitely in use.

She crouched down and carefully lifted the tarp, so as not to attract attention from those below her. She could see Ray Sacks talking to Mannheim! Lois suppressed a gasp of excitement, and readied her camera. She silently clicked photos, all the while thinking up a juicy headline.

“Mob boss in cahoots with shady Sacks”

“Sacks’ secret dealings with Mannheim Mob”

“Money hungry mob deals with dirty DA”

Or…

Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She flipped herself over, only to come face to face with a pistol.

“The boss is not going to like this one bit,” said the thug. “Aren’t you that reporter chick who’s been causing trouble for some of my friends lately?”

“I’ll cause you some more trouble if you don’t let me go,” she said defiantly, though she could feel her heart about to thud out of her chest with fear.

The thug laughed, relaxing his grip on the pistol, giving Lois the in she needed to kick up in the air and nail him in the crotch.

As he doubled over in pain, she got up and scrambled for the fire escape ladder. Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, came another heavy. He was able to grab her, and had a knife to her throat in a matter of seconds.

“Not so fast, cupcake. The boss would like a word with you first,” he said, tugging her inside the building.

“The Red-Blue Blur will stop you,” she said with forced bravado, managing to step on his toes with her heel. But it only made him hold her tighter.

“Spiteful b*tch!” he yelped, gripping her tighter. “Don’t tempt me to cut your throat now, with or without the boss’ approval.”

That tempered her enough to at least let him lead her down the staircase into the room below.

“Look what I found, Boss,” said the thug, obviously proud of his get.

The pair turned towards the ruffian. Lois noticed a stack of abnormally green cash in Mannheim’s fist.

“Well, well. If it isn’t the lovely Miss Lane come to visit. I thought you understood my warning earlier,” said Sacks, with a sneer.

“Yeah, well, I’ve never been good at taking orders,” she mumbled, the knife still held at her throat.

Mannheim gestured to his thug. “Tie her up in the corner over there,” he said, licking his thumb as he prepared to count another handful of bills. “We’re almost finished here. We’ll deal with her in a minute.”

Fearing a nick if she made a false move, Lois let herself be carried over to a wooden chair. At last she could breathe normally as the thug let go of the knife long enough to tie her hands tight. He came around to tie her feet and she managed to kick him square in the chest, causing him to fall over.

“Hey, what’s going on over here?” asked Mannheim, coming over with a pistol out. “Do you want to die right here, Miss Lane?”

She mutely shook her head, fear clenching her belly at the sight of another pistol aimed at her head.
“Then I suggest you let Ralph do his job.”

Ralph got up and again made a second attempt at tying her legs to the chair. Lois wanted to struggle, but then she realized that if they turned back to whatever they had been discussing, she might learn more of their plan. Besides, she might have a better chance of escaping without their eyes focused on her.

After seeing to her being securely tied up, they walked back over to the counterfeit money printer, resuming their conversation in low tones. “We can print enough money here to fund your re-election campaign and then some, Mr. Sacks. And with the money the Ace pulls in, well, we do a little mixing, and the Feds will never know the difference,” Mannheim said with a shrug of his shoulders.

Lois watched as Sacks considered the idea. “I don’t want a single greenback traceable to my office, you hear? Everything has to appear legit.”

“Scout’s honor,” Mannheim said, half seriously. “Besides, I owe you for busting me out of the slammer. Did they ever find that Stiletto chick?”

“There wasn’t a mention of her in the paper today, which I find suspicious. But I have my men looking for her.”

Lois tried to hide her alarm, realizing exactly the kind of danger she had put herself in by pretending to be a superhero. Clark had been right. She hated it when he was right…

Suddenly, she felt hands on her ties, undoing them. She turned, almost half-expecting to see the Blur himself behind her, but was surprised to see instead Green Arrow, aka Oliver Queen.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered tersely.

“Saving your hide. Keep still while I cut the ropes on your feet,” he whispered back.

As Ollie bent over her feet to uncut them, suddenly a shot rang out.

She heard a terse, “Damn,” come from him, just as he finished untying her ropes. “Lois – run!” he commanded, and she noted with horror that he had been shot through the shoulder.

“I’m not leaving you here,” she said, quickly reaching behind him to grab his compound bow off his back.
She had little experience with bows and arrows, but she knew these were pre-set to aim and shoot.
“How hard can it be?” she muttered to herself.

“This Lane chick is something else,” said Mannheim with some amusement, his gun casually in his hand as he gestured towards them. “Hey look, Sacks. We may get two for the price of one.”

Lois acted fast, seeing this as possibly their only moment to escape.

Where the hell was the Blur? She wondered silently.

Lois locked on to the trigger, but at the very last second, shot nearly directly upwards towards the tarp, causing all in the room to look up as the tarp was snagged down over top them.

“Go!” she whispered brusquely, as she pushed Oliver towards a back entrance during the momentary distraction.

“They’re going to come after us,” he said needlessly. Suddenly he stopped and pulled out a foldable grappling arrow that he aimed above them. “Grab on.”

Lois clung onto him as they were pulled up and over to the balcony at the Ace of Clubs by his anchored arrow. “Come on. It will be harder for them to find us inside,” Oliver said, taking her by the hand.

He led her to the back towards the men’s room. “Ladies’ is always full. At least here, we have a chance of hiding for a bit,” he said, somewhat apologetically.

Lois didn’t hesitate and just nodded her acquiescence.

As soon as they were inside, Oliver scanned the bathroom. Seeing it was empty, he blocked the handle with one of his weapons. It would keep the average guest from coming in, but any serious pressure would knock it out of place.

Lois could now see, in the fullness of the florescent lighting, just how badly Oliver was hurt.

“First Clark, and now you…” she said, her voice full of self-recrimination. “You’d think I’d listen after a while… How you holding up?” she asked, turning on the water to soak a paper towel. “This will only clean the surface. We have to get you to a hospital or—“

“No. I can’t go to a hospital dressed like this, Lois. You know that. There—there’s someplace I can go, but,” he shook his head, which was now dripping with sweat as he seemed to be suppressing showing how much pain he was in.

“You can trust me, Ollie,” Lois said softly, hearing the echo of her words to the Blur. Sure, she trusted the men in her life, but how often had they trusted her?

“I know, Legs,” he said, his speech starting to slur from the pain.

“You only call me Legs when you are really a mess… We’ve got to get you out of here… Can I call Clark?” she asked with some trepidation, an unspoken question on her lips, as she nodded slightly at his Green Arrow getup.

Does he know you’re Green Arrow? She wondered, recalling the night her dreams of reuniting with Ollie had literally been shattered by the strange assassin woman who had the ability to smash glass with her voice. Lois would never forget the moment she realized who Oliver really was – and knew that they could never be together for precisely reasons like the situation they were in now.

After a moment’s hesitation, Oliver nodded.

Lois pulled out her Blackberry, discouraged to see no signal. She walked over to the small window on the far side of the bathroom, and eventually had a few bars of available service.

“Clark? It’s Lois,” she said, glancing worriedly at Oliver who was half-sitting on the sink, his head against the mirror. He held a wad of paper towels against his shoulder where he’d been shot, but she could see that he wasn’t doing too well.

“Lois, where are you?” Clark’s voice brought her back to the conversation. He sounded worried.

“I’m at the Ace of Clubs. With Oliver. He’s—badly hurt, Clark. I don’t know how to get us out of here. Maybe you can inform the police about Mannheim and Sacks’ dealings… I don’t know. Sacks’ thugs are probably still after us. I don’t know how much time we may have…”

Lois suddenly heard a whoosh of air, and Oliver was gone.

“The Blur,” she said with awe. “Clark, it may be okay. I think the Blur just rescued Oliver.”

“Sit tight, Lois. I’m—around the corner. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“And risk you getting hurt again, too? I don’t think so, Clark. Besides, the Blur is nearby. Maybe he’ll come back for me, too…”

Practically before the words were out of her mouth, Lois was in the Blur’s arms being carried away. She was standing at doors of the Daily Planet, as safe as ever in the blink of an eye.

“Clark? Are you there?”she asked, surprised her phone was still in her hand.

“I just heard a noise. Is everything okay, Lois?”

She smiled, “Yes, everything is fine. I’m at the Planet. The Blur just made another whirlwind save.”

“Please, Lois. Promise me you’ll head home? Or better yet, maybe even come to the farm? That way, your place won’t be the first place they look for you…”

Lois’ smile grew wider, though she tried to hide it, lest he could hear it in her voice. “Clark Kent, are you trying to play protector?”

“Lois, I just mean—“

“It’s okay, Smallville. I appreciate the offer. I’ll be over as soon as I can. Besides… I have a juicy story that I just may let you in on if you’re good.”

“See you soon, Lois. And please. Be careful.”

~\S/~

Lois did intend on heading to Smallville, but first she wanted to thank the Blur for getting them out of the Ace of Clubs safely.

She had put herself in danger, if truth be told. But all the same, the Blur should be thanked for saving her bacon – and Ollie’s.

She had so many questions about Oliver floating in her mind…

Why had he even been there in the first place?

Had he been on another mission and they just happened to cross paths?

… Or had the Blur sent Oliver ahead until he could get there?

If that were the case, then Oliver might know who the Blur was. Not that she’d ever press either of them for the identity of the Blur, but she did sort of like the idea that Green Arrow wasn’t fighting crime every night on the mean streets of Metropolis alone.

Lois picked up her pace as she made her way to the phone booth. It was 9:59 PM.

The phone started ringing just as she set her hand on the receiver.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Lois—“

“You saved me and Green Arrow. How can I ever thank you?”

“There’s no need, Lois.”

She hesitated, not wanting to seem pushy, but infinitely curious. “Did you know Ol—uh, Green Arrow, would be there?”

The Blur paused for a long moment. “No – I simply got there as soon as I could and found you two hiding in the bathroom.”

She felt slightly deflated… so much for the idea that Ollie and the Blur were friends… “How did you know where to look for us?”

“I—I can see through walls.”

“You what?” she asked in astonishment, her disappointment quickly forgotten. “How does that work, exactly?”

“Well, I just focus – and objects just disappear before my vision. Everything except things made out of lead, that is,” he added practically.

“You simply amaze me…” she said, full of breathless wonder. How many other things could the Blur do? But still, despite him saving her and Ollie, it was Oliver who had rescued her – and had gotten shot in the process. “Where did you take Green Arrow, by the way? He said he didn’t want to go to a hospital—“

“I took him to a friend’s. Don’t worry, Lois. He’s in good hands. And his identity is safe.”

“So you do know him?” she couldn’t resist asking.

“I—let’s just say that heroes of all stripes try to stick together.”

“Does he know your identity?” she asked, and then immediately backtracked. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked that. I know it’s important for you to keep your identity hidden. But Green Arrow is a good guy – I’d be happy just knowing that you have a friend out there whom you can trust.”

“Thanks, Lois.”

“Honestly, I’m just glad you were able to get us out of there. You--- and I hate to admit it, Clark---were right… I should have been more careful.”

“Lois, you can’t always count on me to be there for you. I wish you’d stop taking so many risks.”

Lois could feel guilt come over her. “I’m sorry. I was just after a story and—I guess I just got a little over-confident… are you sure O--- Green Arrow will be okay?” she asked, uncertain whether she could or even should use Oliver’s name or not.

“Yes. He’ll be fine. Please, promise me you’ll leave Mannheim and his thugs alone for a while?”

She sighed, feeling like a reprimanded child. “Yes, I will. But this isn’t over. I already have some evidence against them. But I promise I won’t throw myself into the fire again.”
"Yeah," Lois began. "Your spit!"

It was Clark's turn to stop walking, Lois turned to look back at him questioningly, "It was you!" Clark cried.

Lois moved her head back at the unexpected accusation, "What do you mean it was me?"

Pushing his wayward glasses back up his nose Clark gave her a look as if to say he could see right through her ruse. Only she didn't have a ruse. "You broke it. Then blame me and my toothpaste spit, which I repeat, never touched the sink last night. "

Lois huffed, though enjoying the exchange immensely seeing as lately they barely had time to banter or argue or whatever it was this sort of exchange could be called and she missed it. Walking again, fast, forcing Clark to do his bumbling act at break neck speed through the crowd to keep up with her, Lois responded with "Oh really Clark! So I broke it and chose spittle as my patsy?"

"You blamed me for the coffee machine when we both know you broke that." Clark responded back. He tripped behind her, grateful that he couldn't twist his ankle which is something he would have done, were he human, with how Lois was navigating them.

Refusing to own up to the coffee maker, Lois used the only defense she had left. "Unless I've developed a meteor freak ability to crack sinks and counter tops while using the bathroom half awake, it can't be me."

"I'm sure Lois, you would find a way.."

At his teasing but frustrated tone Lois hid a smile.

ღ

The debate was no closer to being resolved by the time Lois met Clark for lunch at their favorite café. Clark took a sip of his ice tea before replying to Lois' last question.

"The only thing I am sure of is it wasn't there yesterday morning when I got up."

Lois nodded and tapped her pen on her notepad. "Okay. I've narrowed it down to happening between the hours of 7 am yesterday to 6:30 this morning."

"Lois I did not break it with my spit!" Giving her a lighthearted glare for her insistence he must have spat too hard.

Lois was unaffected, "I can't discount it happening in the evening when neither of us is 100% sure a crack or at least the start of one wasn't there. You were in a rush and I was half asleep."

"Maybe it was on it's way before we even moved in." Clark suggested, giving an awkward smile at the waitress placing down their orders.

"Clark, the bathroom sink was new when we moved in. Remember - oh wait, you weren't there when the landlord was giving his life story." Lois replied with a roll of her eyes before taking a sip of her coffee and scribbling a note down. "So it can't be because it's old. No, something happened. I am sure of it."

"Obviously something happened." Clark picked at his food while watching her, "Why does it matter? I can just replace it."

Lois picked up a fry and took a bite before remarking, "It doesn't matter I guess, it's just odd." She sighed, "It's been driving me crazy all morning. Like how did our bathroom sink suddenly get a 5 inch crack in it? And what's worse - we're not even sure when it happened!"

They ate in silence for several minutes with Lois scribbling things down then crossing them off. Her foot had slipped out of her heel and was rubbing up and down his leg casually. Clark shifted, trying to remain physically calm while attempting to read her notes but couldn't make heads nor tails of what he was seeing. Though some, if they were doodles, which were a bit on the x-rated side.

"Lois." He finally said after finishing off his own fries.

"Yes, honey?" She didn't look up from her latest doodle, apparently adding finishing touches of what was suppose to be them in some sort of intimate position.

"Your food is getting cold."

Lois looked up at him and bit her bottom lip a second before picking up a fry and taking a slow bite. Clark raised a brow and cleared his throat. He knew the look in her eyes far too well and decided the sink conversation was probably for the best if she was actually going to get food in her. If it wasn't for his insistence she'd never get enough to eat, she was far too easily distracted.

Other appetites often won out.

"I'm thinking that we didn't notice the sink because the crack actually happened while we were gone. " At the argumentative expression on her face Clark added, "However, I think whatever caused it started earlier. Something we did."

"If getting ready for work is going to break our sinks we have an issue, Smallville." Lois pointed out.

Clark leaned forward a bit. "Lois, getting ready for work wasn't all we did."

Sucking the inside of her cheek Lois' eyes flickered to her little doodles before locking with his own, "True." She replied slowly. "So, how exactly would that have caused..." Pausing midsentence as realization dawned on her.

"Oh!"

Clark nodded his eyes remaining steady with her own.

"You really think that..."

Clearing his throat and adjusting his tie Clark was unable to stop the images forming in his head, "Yes, I do. " Taking a quick glance around. "We should discuss this later."

Lois smirked, "Yeah, we should." Unashamedly enjoying her own graphic flashback.

Heat cascaded over her skin in delightful waves, tingles sent racing down her spine with each and every caressing touch of his warm lips. The water streaming down her had cooled in temperature but the heat flowing around her was all from him, them, generated by touch and sensation, by desire.

His hand gripped her waist, pulling her tighter to him while the other trailed down her back, along her spine to cup her bottom, squeezing gently causing her to gasp as her body was pushed completely flush with his own.

His mouth began to move across her neck, Lois leaned her head back gripping his wet hair, his shoulders tightly. The things Clark Kent could do to her, how he could make her feel. The fire, that had started in her belly, raged like a volcano demanding attention, every nerve burned from his touch. Not with pain but pleasure. Barely able to cope with the need only he could satisfy, Lois hooked a leg high up his thigh, rocking her body into his.

Ring...ring...

Clark moaned. Lois wasn't sure if it was because of her or reality bidding them back. Lost in the fog of heat and delight she didn't particularly care at that moment who was calling. The President of the United States could be demanding her attention and it wouldn't have mattered.

Unfortunately, there was another kind of call that took precedence.

When he began to lovingly detach himself from her, lingering his lips one last time over hers, Lois felt her body protest the loss of his heat and touch as if she had suffered a sudden shock.

Neither spoke as their eyes met, there was nothing to say that hadn't already been conveyed. Water cascaded down between them, over heaving chests, swollen lips and glazed eyes under half-lidded eyelashes. Sliding a hand up his chest Lois gave him a provocative look, willing him to hurry back.

The intensity of his gaze told her he would come back hell or high water.

Lois felt the whoosh of air and...

"Earth to Lois."

Feeling very warm and a bit amourus Lois glanced up at Clark. "Hmm..." She said and stole a drink of his ice tea which at that point was mostly ice water.

Clark was watching her with a look that was a cross between amused, turned on and impatience. Why did he have to be so 'grown up' at times? Lois chuckled to herself as she took a big bite of her burger.

"Dhere. Bwettur?" she mumbled through a mouth full of food.

Giving her a pleased smile Clark nodded back , "Yes, better"

"Nowm, " Lois swallowed the bite and slightly pointed the burger at him "Now why do you think our morning fun is responsible?"

Clark gave her a resigned look for bringing the topic back up.

"Oh, live a little, Smallville. Besides, " She grinned, " we can be vague, no one is going to know what we're discussing."

With a sigh Clark leaned back and crossed his arms, "We were a little... intense. "

"Yes, we were. So?"

"So I think we must have cracked it or started it."

Lois shook her head, "Clark.." She leaned forward. "Shower intensity isn't going to break a sink."

"No," he responded also leaning forward. "You getting rough could."

"Rough?"

"Yes, you got... rough and we moved a lot."

"You liked it." Lois grinned devilishly.

She could see the smile in his eyes even though he kept a neutral face. "Can we please discuss this later?"

Giving him a long look Lois nodded, "Oh, we will, Clark Kent. We will."

She received a smile and returned it as she took another bite. Stopping a moment later mid chew, her eyes went wide. Clark Kent was officially playing footsie with her. In public.
Rated PG-13
Summary: This is an AU story where Lois Lane travels into space as the reporter aboard EPRAD’s Mission to Mars. When something goes terribly wrong, her life pod crashes in a strange land. At gunpoint, she is taken before the Supreme Ruler — Kal-El.

A/N This fic is based on a premise that is highly improbable — some might say impossible. But the Superman universe includes a man who can fly, so I hope you can get past the scientific laxness and still enjoy the story.

The recognisable characters are not mine. I have drawn from ‘Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ for themes and other details.

In the early parts of this fic, there are a couple of moments that suggest something terrible is about to happen. They are quickly resolved.

I owe a large debt of thanks to Iolanthe, my Beta Reader extraordinaire.

Prologue

Lois Lane was excited.

More excited than the day she’d landed her job at the Daily Planet.

More excited than the night she’d won her first Kerth.

More excited than the moment she’d known for sure that she had brought down Lex Luthor.

Eight months of exhaustive tests, nerve-racking interviews, and interminable submissions had come to this.

There was one remaining vacancy on EPRAD’s Mission to Mars — a vacancy to be filled by a reporter.

From the moment she had heard, Lois’s life had been wholly devoted to ensuring that she would be the reporter on the spaceship. Her focus had been unwavering, her drive relentless, and her resolve uncompromising.

The head honcho of EPRAD walked to the microphone, and the tension in Lois’s stomach spiralled upwards, squeezing the air from her lungs.

He scanned the full one hundred, eighty degrees of the crowd before him, obviously relishing his moment in the spotlight. “Thank you,” he said. He cleared his throat. “EPRAD’s Mission to Mars is the result of many years of … ”

Lois tuned out. Her brain was already saturated with every single aspect of the Mission to Mars. She knew everything there was to know. Everything except the one detail that mattered.

A swell of anticipation rippled through the gathered crowd, and Lois’s attention leapt back to the man with the microphone.

“It is my great pleasure to announce that the reporter who will be joining us on the Mission to Mars is … ”

The tension around her lungs squeezed tighter.

“ … Ms Lois Lane, Daily Planet.”

The world stopped.

There was time — as those around her caught up — for the reality to permeate her mind.

She was going.

She was actually going.

She had dreamed of this moment … dreamed it, imagined it, lived it, breathed it, been absorbed by it.

Then the bubble of solitude shattered, and countless people jostled around her, hugging her, slapping her back, speaking very loudly, laughing, showering her with congratulations.

Lois grinned, incapable of anything more profound than, “Thank you. Thank you.”

She was going.

She was really going.

Part 1a

Kal-El, Supreme Ruler of New Krypton, heard the soft click and looked up from the report he was reading. The red light above the door flashed, signifying someone was requesting an audience with him.

He closed the report and stepped out from the inner sanctum of his bedroom and into the more public Chambers. He positioned himself in the large seat on the raised platform. “Enter,” he directed.

The door flung open and six armed soldiers stomped in.

Six soldiers flanking one woman.

She was small and petite, practically hidden by the bigger bodies of his soldiers as they hauled her forward. They stopped a yard in front of Kal.

“Let go of her,” he commanded.

“Sir.” The most senior soldier spoke with breathless urgency. “She’s an alien.” Not one of them had loosened their grip on the woman.

“Let go of her,” Kal repeated.

The soldiers unhanded her with clear reluctance. Two of them raised their rifles and stood, poised, their weapons aimed directly at her head.

Kal gestured impatiently to the closest soldiers to clear the space between him and the woman. They shuffled back.

The woman’s head was down. From his elevated position, Kal could see little other than the mussed dark hair on the top of her head. Then, slowly, her head lifted, and she confronted him, brown eyes steady, face set, chin up. Her dark hair hung loose across her shoulders.

Kal stared right back, careful to stifle his surprise. Very few people looked directly into his eyes. No one ever regarded him with such … simmering indifference.

Fascinated, he studied her. He could have ended her life with one word to his soldiers. Either she didn’t realise the precariousness of her situation, or she wasn’t one to cower. To anyone.

“Where did you get her?” Kal questioned, his eyes still locked in hers.

“A primitive vessel crash landed beyond the city gates,” the soldier answered. “We investigated … and found this.”

This was not Kryptonian, that much was obvious. Kal skimmed his eyes down her clothes — they were unfamiliar in both design and material — before settling again in the uncanny magnetism of her unflinching eyes.

Who was she? Where had she come from? Was she alone? Did she represent a threat to his people?

“Are you injured?” Kal asked her.

Her gaze flittered briefly to his mouth before returning to bore into his eyes.

“What is your name?” he said.

Not even a glimmer of understanding showed on her face.

“Your name?” he tried again.

Her mouth opened, and a string of sounds emerged. Was she trying to communicate? Kal didn’t recognise any words. He didn’t even recognise any sounds. Certainly, she wasn’t speaking Kryptonian … or anything remotely related to his mother tongue.

Kal swung his attention from the woman to the most senior of the soldiers. “Take her to the Noble’s Prison,” he ordered. “Give her food.”

“Sir,” the soldier said, “we barely have sufficient food for our own people.”

“Take her to the Noble’s Prison,” Kal repeated, his tone fortified with steely authority. “Put her in one of the rooms and leave food with her.”

The solider nodded, and the woman was thrust from Kal’s presence.

***

Lois Lane didn’t appreciate being mauled by six armed men.

However, they hadn’t shot her.

Yet.

Although she couldn’t be sure that wasn’t the plan.

They’d obviously taken her to a top banana — probably their leader or something. Maybe he was in charge of illegal aliens.

Lois sifted through her fragmented memories. It had happened so incredibly quickly. In the spaceship, they’d ordered her — in panicked voices and urgent gestures — to get into the one-person, cramped pod that was basically the equivalent of a lifeboat on a ship.

She’d got in. Matt, one of the astronauts, had slammed shut the lid, entombing her.

Then there had been an almighty roar, and her pod had been tossed around like a solitary snowflake in a blizzard.

She’d blacked out.

Surfaced.

Blacked out again.

Felt grossly nauseated.

Then awakened to stillness and silence.

Both of which had been shattered when the door of her capsule had been violently peeled back and the business ends of six weapons had converged on her face.

They’d hauled her from the capsule, adding a few extra scratches and bruises in the process. As they had hustled her forward, she’d gotten her first view of wherever she’d landed. It was arid … dry, bare, and ugly. It was cold … freezing, although she saw no ice or snow. It was dull … as if they were in heavy shadow. And everything was tinged red. Lois looked up, searching for the sun. A bloodshot haze hung above them.

The place smelled.

Bad.

Like someone had been boiling gym socks.

The soldiers had set her before Mr Top Banana.

Lois was fairly sure there had been communication between the soldiers and the boss guy, although it had sounded so unlike any language she’d ever heard, she’d checked his mouth for movement.

Now she was in a room — stark and bare except for a small, raised platform that could have been a bed. It was cool, but definitely warmer than outside, for which she was grateful. One of the soldiers had brought a bowl of something and left it with her.

As soon as she was alone, Lois had tried the door. It was locked.

She examined the contents of the bowl. It was lime green in colour and had the consistency of thick yoghurt. She bent low and sniffed.

It didn’t really have an aroma of its own … which meant it smelled like boiled gym socks.

Lois wrinkled her nose.

She was hungry.

She just wasn’t sure if she were that hungry.

Or if this was even food.

Lois sat on the platform and shuffled back into the corner where the cold, hard walls met. There was no mattress, no pillow, no bedding of any sort.

Where was she?

Somewhere remote, obviously. Greenland? Siberia? Shouldn’t there be snow? Deepest Africa? No, the people weren’t Africans. So where was she?

Were there any other survivors from the Mission to Mars?

The men who had found her pod had seemed surprised … although the expressionless mien of their faces hadn’t altered. But there was something in the quick jerkiness of their actions that had seemed to suggest that finding stray space vehicles wasn’t an everyday occurrence. Lois surmised she was probably the first.

How long was it going to take to get back to Metropolis? She needed to contact Perry – soon — because this story had ‘guaranteed Pulitzer’ stamped all over it.

With a heavy sigh, she realised that it was in her best interests to appear compliant. She hungered for that Pulitzer so badly she could taste it … but being awarded it posthumously didn’t have quite the same appeal.

And she was going to need help to get home.

The door opened, and an older person walked in, holding a white garment. The person’s face was blank and pallid. It was hairless like a woman’s but held not even a hint of femininity. Lois glanced down. Under the shapeless cloak-like gown, there was the hint of a bust. She was probably female.

Lois stood. The woman held up the garment. It was a satiny dress — short and sleeveless. The woman pushed it towards Lois.

The woman said something — something totally incomprehensible. She gestured to Lois.

With a sinking feeling, Lois realised she was meant to wear the dress. They were going to freeze her to death.

Lois nodded and held the dress next to her body, trying to indicate that she understood she was to wear the dress, hoping the woman would get the hint and leave. The woman stared, unmoving.

With a sigh, Lois unbuttoned her jacket and slithered out of it and her shirt. She slipped the dress over her head, removed her shoes, pulled up the dress, and eased her jeans from her body.

The woman pointed to Lois’s thick, dark socks — socks that now jarred visually with her bare legs and the shiny whiteness of the dress. Despite the woman’s vacant expression, Lois sensed her disapproval.

With a sigh, Lois bent and removed her socks. The bare, concrete floor was cold.

Seemingly satisfied, the woman turned and left.

A minute later, two armed soldiers stormed through her door. They pushed Lois out of the room and kept her moving with regular jabs from the ends of their rifles. They hustled her back to the building where she’d seen Mr Top Banana. As they went inside, they passed between two armed sentries — neither of whom even glanced in their direction.

They took her to the same room as before. Mr Top Banana was there, standing this time, instead of entrenched in the big, ornately carved seat.

He barked something — it actually sounded more like a dog’s bark than anything human — and the two soldiers turned and left. Obviously, he had clout. People did what he told them.

Lois faced him, her head high. He wore much grander clothes than the soldiers, lived in a guarded — and heated – palace, and had a pompous seat to perch on … but she was going to let him know it took more than that to impress Lois Lane.

He was tall … dark-haired … and — despite his weird dress-and-pants outfit — not bad looking. His eyes were brown and cold … no, not cold … empty. His mouth moved as he ‘spoke’ — if those strange noises were supposed to be speech — revealing nicely-shaped teeth.

Whatever he was trying to say, it was taking a long time. Lois gave up trying to understand and surveyed her surroundings. Other than the ‘throne’, the room contained very little — a small table and a bookcase of shelves laden with large books. The decor — if you could call it decor — looked like brown mud smeared on concrete walls. The floor was bare — and cold.

Her attention returned to Mr Top Banana, and she tried to judge what she could expect from him. Compassion? Brutality? Justice? Assistance?

“Excuse me.” Lois cut briskly across his monologue. “Lois Lane, Daily Planet, Metropolis. I need to get home. I have a very important story to write.”

He’d stopped talking at ‘excuse me’. He considered her — his face showing neither anger, nor annoyance, nor surprise, nor any other recognisable emotion. He waited in silence for a short time and then spoke. When he stopped, he waited again. Lois figured he expected a reply. She shrugged.

He strode to the table and picked up what looked like a syringe — without a needle — containing purple gel. He approached her purposefully.

Lois held up her hand to thwart his progress. “Don’t touch me,” she warned, making no attempt to conceal her resentment.

Her body language, her tone, her words — all were completely ineffectual. He stepped closer with calm determination. Her hostility gave way to fear. “No,” she cried, backing away from him. “No.”

He followed her until she thudded into the wall. He advanced an additional step and towered over her. He was going to drug her, she was sure of it. A scream rose in her throat, but she feverishly swallowed it down as she tightly clamped her mouth.

He grasped her right wrist with his left hand. Lois kicked at him and tried to wrench back her hand. The battle was hopelessly uneven — his strength far exceeded hers. He leant his forearm across her chest, pinning her against the wall. He brought the syringe to her captured wrist and squirted its contents onto the back of her hand.

It stung, and Lois instinctively jolted back, but she was neither quick enough nor strong enough to lessen his grip on her wrist. She peered into his face, expecting anger, or triumph, or even manic cruelty. She saw none of them.

The realisation hit her with the force of a tornado — he took no pleasure from this.

Lois relaxed against the wall, and he immediately lifted his forearm from her body.

When the syringe was empty, he tossed it onto the table. Using his thumbs, he rubbed the purple gel into the back of her hand. He spread it from her knuckles to her wrist, from her thumb to the base of her little finger.

His touch was neither gentle nor rough. Lois sensed neither kindness nor malice. His actions were … deliberate, devoid of feeling.

The stinging abated. The colour faded.

Then the door opened. Two soldiers came into the room, and Lois was hustled away.

I’m working on a new chapter for ‘Midnight Sun’ but this idea suddenly entered my head and I couldn’t help myself. So here it is. If you like it or not, let me know. Usually I don’t write a new story with one already in progress, but this plot line has been haunting me, literally.

Wide Awake

Summary: When an anomalous, but deliberate accident disrupts Clark’s path to being Superman. Two strangers come. Who are they? Why are they here?

Prologue is Post-Pandora and Pre-Disciple

Prologue

2010

Lois rolled her eyes as she paced around. Today was their first date and he is 20 minutes late

‘Well, technically 3rd date, with the first two times, him not bothering appearing’ thought Lois as she remembered

“Kent, if you don’t bother appearing this time, I will castrate you…” muttered Lois but inside she held a fear that he really won’t appear

When Clark had asked her out, after she had been released from the hospital for weird, fantasy flashbacks, she had been sceptical. Not wanting to risk their friendship but mostly, she was afraid that Clark wouldn’t want her. Yes she was soft and vulnerable inside, even though she always put up a tough appearance

She sighed in irritation as she paced even more, but when she heard a clutter, she froze.

“Clark?” asked Lois uncertainly, but there was no answer

“Good god Smallville, if this is your idea of making up with me, then it is failing miserably” said Lois but there was no answer

Now wary, she turned around. Not a living soul seemed to be there but Lois’s instincts were screaming and on high alert. Biting her lips, she turned around again and froze up, her eyes going wide

“Hello, Ms. Lane”

So…eh, should I continue?

11:40 pm

Lois crept out of her room as quietly as possible. Well, actually, it was Clark’s room, not hers. And that was part of the reason for her late night walk-around. Lying in his bed, surrounded by his things, she’d been unable to forget the feel of his lips or the tingle that they elicited.

It had been forty minutes since they’d said goodnight. Mr and Mrs Kent had gone to bed just before eleven and Lois had turned away from wishing them a goodnight only to be met by the intense gaze of one handsome farm-boy. He’d stood and taken one step across the room then stopped, towering over her.

“I …” she stammered. He just looked down at her. Although it was only moments it felt like a lifetime while she relived the rollercoaster of emotions and changes of the week. This evening had been especially obscure. The time spent in the barn loft had been a combination of blissful and sharp. They’d alternated between using their lips for kissing and using them for sarcasm. It seemed that even the burgeoning romance couldn’t completely replace their natural banter.

Coming back into the house for supper had initiated the awkward factor. With Clark’s parents around they’d been careful to avoid suspicion. It had been easy to keep up the snarky comments; it was their default relationship stance. But it had been hard to hide her new feelings. She’d flicked her gaze to him over the top of her coffee too often.

“I should go to bed,” she said and stood. He nodded, still not speaking. She couldn’t move; trapped between his gaze and the couch. “I …” His gaze flicked to her mouth and she fluttered her eyes closed preparing to be assaulted by the pleasurable feelings that came with his every touch but; instead of feeling his arms encircle her, grasping her close in fierce desire she felt a feather-light touch on her lips only.

A second of contact and it was gone. The tingle which accompanied every kiss was strangely more intense than ever before with this lightest of kisses. She opened her eyes immediately, confused.

“Yes. I think you should go to bed,” Clark said. Lois shuffled past him and headed for the stairs. At the bottom step she turned to say goodnight expecting to see Clark still in the distance in the lounge but he was immediately behind her and she jumped in shock, her heart skipping a beat.

“Oh!” she squeaked.

“Goodnight Lois,” he whispered then kissed her again. This time the contact lingered, but Clark refused to deepen the kiss. Lois pulled away and nibbled her bottom lip.

“Night,” she whispered back then turned and ran up the steps.

That was forty minutes ago. And now Lois found herself creeping downstairs in the hopes of … of … She blushed. She didn’t even want to think it, never mind say it out loud. At the bottom step she turned and look back up, checking that she had not been discovered. She smiled and turned back.

Heading for the kitchen, no longer creeping, she hummed a lively tune. In the kitchen she opened the refrigerator and took out the milk, closing the door forcefully. When she looked around for a glass she saw some draining by the side of the sink and frowned. That would not do. She turned and headed for the cupboard and opened it. She pulled out a glass, identical to the ones already out and then slammed the door shut.

She surreptitiously peered over her shoulder in the direction of the front room, but there was no sound. She sighed and headed back to the counter where she’d left the milk. Once she’d opened the carton and poured out a drink she sealed it up again and banged it down on the counter. Another look back in a certain direction revealed that her hard work was bearing no fruit.

She leant against the counter and took a sip of the ice-cold milk.

11:51pm

Lois continued to lean. She nibbled her lower lip. This wasn’t working out like she expected. She put down her drink and reached for the kitchen tap. She turned it on full blast for about ten seconds then twisted it off again. She picked up every cup and gently slammed them back down on the counter. She opened the cutlery drawer and rattled it around. Still nothing.

She picked up her milk and wandered to the kitchen table then slid into a seat.

OK. Three choices. One, go back to bed. The disappointment arcing through her heart meant that she immediately discounted that option.

Two, wake him up deliberately.

The warring emotions of embarrassment and pride stopped her from considering that one any longer. That left only the final option.

Continue with the loud noises, hoping he wakes up, comes to find me and initiates … cause I’m certainly not going to let him think that I’m desperate.

She stood and wandered into the living room, making sure to walk as loudly as possible.

I guess I have to be a bit more ‘disturbing’ before he’ll wake up though. I know subtle isn’t my strong point but I’d have thought he’d be awake by now.

As she strolled towards the sleeping figure on the couch she tipped her head and pondered.

Maybe he’s a really deep sleeper.

She made it right to his side and teased at her lip with her teeth as she studied him. Suddenly it occurred to her that it was a good thing he was a heavy sleeper; it gave her the perfect opportunity to study him. As she circled the couch, taking sips from her milk every now and again, she admired the sexy picture he created.

Strewn over his body, haphazardly, was the thinnest of sheets. She could see the lay of his legs, knees half drawn up to his chest. His arms were out on top of the sheet and his muscular chest and biceps were quite evident. She just completed her circuit as she moved onto the piece de resistance; his face and ridiculously sexily tousled hair. All the frustrations of life which seemed to dog him, and make him into a brooding, tortured soul were wiped from his face in sleep. She’s almost seen this sense of peace in him earlier, as if their teenage hormone induced face-sucking had been something of a burden-lightening experience. But this… This was perfect peace and contentment. She wondered what had made him so happy. Was he dreaming?

She placed her glass down on the small table just next to the couch and then she crouched down. Her face was almost level with his now.

11:59pm

"Are you going to kiss me, or just keep admiring the view?" Clark's sexy, teasing voice came. Lois gasped in shock. His eyes were still closed. She narrowed her eyes and smiled slyly. Lowering her head she touched her lips to his and he immediately parted his; tongue flicking out. Lois didn't move at all, just let him kiss her, and his hands didn't come up and surround her, but, even so she felt her heart begin to flutter.

When a noise on the stairs started her out of the haze she jumped up and away. She looked down to see Clark pull his sheet up and over his head immediately. Lois took one step away from the couch just as Martha peered round the corner.

"Is everything okay, Lois?" she asked.

"Mmm hmm," Lois nodded, eyes wide.

"What are you doing down here, sweety?"

"Um, I just came down for a glass of milk and I …" she cocked her head to the side, "heard Smallville here moaning so just came to check that he was alright."

Martha just smiled and raised her eyebrows in laughter.

"I think he was dreaming or something. I was a little worried for a moment." She saw the sheet move a tiny bit beside her and began to play up the situation. "He sounded quite distressed. All that deep moaning and breathing. I'm guessing his dream was kind of intense." The sheet quivered a little. She guessed he was trying not to laugh.

"Well, everything seems fine now. I guess the dream has passed," Martha nodded, obviously trying to suppress a smile. After a pause she continued. "Did you get your milk honey?"

Lois shuffled her feet. "Um, yeah."

"Ok, then I guess you'll be back off to bed."

"Um, yeah," she repeated and half laughed then wandered in the direction of the stairs, a little dazed. At the doorway she glanced back at the couch quickly and frowned in frustration then turned and headed up the stairs.

So, go ahead and comment. I'm sure there will be another midnight encounter soon. I know this encounter was a little tame but I can assure you that future encounters will be steamier - possibly on an increasing scale.

Hi all! This is a little fic that just wouldn't let me go until I finished it. I'm still working on the pre-'Blurring the lines' story, but this one wouldn't let me go--

It's what happened in those three weeks during Dominion while Clark was in the Phantom Zone and how Lois coped. It's just two parts. Hope you enjoy!

A Hero’s Wife

It wasn’t possible. Clark wouldn’t leave her. He simply wouldn’t.

Surely Tess had done this. This couldn’t possibly be under Clark’s orders. He wouldn’t destroy the gate, his only way home. His only way back to her.

But what sacred Lois more, was the absolute honesty she saw in Tess. Gone were the usual subterfuges, the arrogance that as a rule, Tess generally wore. Deep down, Lois knew Tess was telling the truth, that Clark had decided they needed a back-up plan in case he couldn’t find who had opened the gate. He had decided he would sacrifice himself in order to protect the world from a greater evil.

Even if it meant abandoning her.

Even if it meant that they would be separated forever.

Tess turned pleading eyes on Lois, and Lois could see that for once, Tess was being completely forthright with her.

And what was worse, Tess seemed to comprehend and accept Clark’s sacrifice while Lois refused to purely for selfish reasons.

Lois didn’t want to contemplate that she would be asked to sacrifice Clark so soon – before their life together had really even begun.

She simply denied that Tess was telling her the truth, afraid of believing that Clark would ask that of her – of them – so soon, and without even having said good-bye.

On instinct or desperation, Lois suddenly pulled the emergency handgun from under the desk and aimed it at Tess.

Tess had betrayed them before. Surely she was the one betraying them now.

But not Clark… never Clark.

He wouldn’t leave me without saying good-bye. Without giving me a chance to talk him out of it…

But she knew, deep down, Clark wouldn’t have let her talk him out of sacrificing himself, especially not if it meant saving the world. What angered her the most was that she knew she would have been selfish enough to try and stop him.

Tess spoke calmly, deliberately, her shocked green eyes meeting the pistol in Lois’ hand. “I understand you love Clark, and that you’d do anything not to lose him.”

“You bet I would,” Lois said in a low voice, fear and anger vying for position in her heart.

“Lois, I don’t want to give up on Clark either. I don’t, but we have a responsibility to not put the world at risk for selfish reasons, which is what you’re doing by wanting to see him again,” Tess explained, finally understanding what it meant to do something that was for the greater good.

Lois felt tears rising up, but she tried to hold her emotions in check. She did not want to seem weak in front of Tess, and she wouldn’t back down. Not when her future with the man she loved was on the line. She had to stop Tess from destroying the gate. “I will not let you sacrifice him.”

“Being with a hero, means accepting that hero’s sacrifices.”

Lois shook her head in denial, oddly thinking suddenly of her mother who had always stood behind the General no matter what. And Lois would be no different. “That’s where you’re wrong,” she said, steely determination in her voice. “Being a hero’s wife, means never accepting defeat.”

Tess lifted her palms in a slightly surrendering gesture, seeing that Lois was pushed beyond reasoning. Lois was afraid, and Tess worried how that fear would manifest itself. She just hoped it wasn’t a gunshot wound in her chest. “Lois, put the gun down. Please,” she coaxed. “We’ll find a way, okay? I promise… we’ll get Clark back.”

Her elbows hurting from the tension of holding the gun, Lois slowly lowered it, setting it on the desk. She was full of adrenaline, and her hand shook a little as she released the gun.

“I knew I’d get you to see things my way,” Lois said coolly, though her heart still pounded in her chest.

Tess turned to the computer, her eyes glancing now and then to the gun on the desk and back to Lois. “I can’t promise I can override the system. There are several back-ups in place, but I’ll do what I can.”

Lois came to stand behind Tess, watching over her shoulder as she typed some codes into the computer. “Do it, Tess. Find a way. I don’t care how noble Clark think he’s being by destroying the gate, he has to come back. He has to…”

Tess nodded reassuringly. “Ok, I stopped the clock. But it has an automatic restart if I can’t override the shutdown command in the next ten minutes,” she said, glancing at Lois. “Clark made sure the destruction of the gate would happen no matter what. He had me put in several security measures.”

“I can’t believe he didn’t even tell me,” Lois murmured in dismay, shaking her head. “I mean, of course I would have tried to talk him out of it, but to just step into that horrible place, not knowing if he’d come back—“

“Clark did what he thought he had to do, Lois.” Tess hit another few keys. “Okay, that did it. The gate will not self-destruct. It can now only be destroyed manually.”

Lois nodded in relief. She began pacing, her arms crossed as she thought. “Look, sorry for going all G.I. Jane on you. I just—“

Tess lifted a palm, gently silencing Lois. “Lois, you don’t have to explain. I would have done the same thing, had the roles been reversed.”

Lois’ eyes darted to the computer screen, tears brimming in her eyes. “Let’s just hope they get out of there…” she said, afraid of voicing her fear of what would happen if they didn’t. “Have you tried the communicator again?”

“I have it on a loop to try every three minutes. So far, nothing. Anything could have happened to those communicators, Lois. Just because we can’t reach Clark and Oliver, doesn’t mean something has happened to them.”

Lois nodded in agreement. “I know. I’d just feel a lot better if I could hear Clark’s voice, or even if I knew he could hear mine. So he knows he’s not alone in there, you know?”

“He’s not, Lois. He has Oliver. They’ll look out for each other.”

Lois agreed, hoping that between the two of them, Clark and Oliver would make it back alive.

Suddenly, they heard a noise on the computer. It sounded like a muffled groan and people yelling in the background. It was only about two seconds long, but Lois honed in on the screen. “Did you hear that? The communicator! Try it again.”

Tess did some fast typing and then spoke into the mic. “Clark? This is Watchtower. Can you hear me? Clark?”

Lois waited expectantly, her fists clenched at her sides, anxious. “Let me try,” she said.

Tess gave her a helpless glance, but gestured to let Lois try.

“Clark? It’s me, Lois. Can you hear me? Clark!?” she cried, her voice growing more desperate with the respondent silence. “Clark!”

Lois stood at the mic for several minutes, every few seconds calling Clark’s name and straining to listen for some kind of answer.

After a while, when it was clear their efforts were futile, Tess put a hand on Lois’ shoulder. “It was just a fluke… we’ll keep trying but—“

Lois turned anxious eyes on Tess. “Did what we hear get recorded? Maybe we can get some clue as to what is happening. We need to hear it again.”

Tess nodded, the memory of Lois aiming a gun at her still fresh in her mind. She would do all she could to help Lois, if only so she’d feel like she was doing something. Even if Tess thought it was hopeless and knew that Clark and Oliver were on their own now.

Tess clicked a few keys, and set the volume levels high on the main computer. She hit play. It came out as jumbled noise, like there was some sort of struggle, and there was an audible grunt.

Lois, suddenly believing that they might have something, began to feel hopeful again. “Can you separate out the noises? Maybe we can know more about what is going on. How much danger they are in.”

“Lois, I don’t know what that will do, except make you worry even more,” Tess warned, knowing how helpless they really were.

Lois glanced at the gun across the room, an unspoken threat that she’d reach for it again if pushed. “Look, if that’s all we have, then that’s what we work with. If that was Clark—“ she swallowed hard, as if speaking her thought pained her. “If that was him, then I need to know what he said.”

Tess nodded, taking a deep breath. “Didn’t sound like much to me, but I can separate out the lows and the highs, and try to clean up any extraneous noise.”

The first track played the highs. It clearly was the sound of a crowd jeering and taunting. Tess glanced at Lois, who was nervously biting her fingernail, something she rarely did anymore.

“OK, here’s the other track.”

It sounded like a sword or a knife, slicing through flesh, and the grunt of pain—

“Clark,” Lois sobbed. “That was Clark, I know it.”

“Lois, there’s nothing you can do. You can’t get to the Phantom Zone yourself. I’m sure, if there’s a way, Clark will make it back.”

Lois nodded, afraid to speak. All she could think was that Clark was without his powers, he was vulnerable, and at the very least, wounded.

“Play it again,” she demanded.

“Lois—“

“Play it!”

Tess reluctantly complied.

At hearing the enhanced sound of Clark grunting with what sounded like a sword through flesh, Lois shook her head. “No, it can’t end this way...” Then she turned again to Tess. “Check the three minute loop on the communicator. Anything?”

“No, we’d hear it if something came through.”

Lois looked calculatingly at the equipment around them, her only fragile connection to Clark in that other world. “Teach me how to check it. How to replay any sounds that come through. I want to know everything about the gate, too. I want to know, because I will wait here until he comes back.”

“Lois,” Tess said carefully. “You have to prepare yourself for the chance that he won’t make it back. You have to understand that.”

Lois shook her head fiercely. “No. I won’t give up on him, because he’d never give up on me.”

~L&C~

Hours later, after Tess had shown Lois all she could on how to check all the possible outcomes with the communicator and how to rerun any sound that may come in, Lois was alone in Watchtower.

The sun was setting on the city, and sunlight was dancing through the stained glass. Despite her concerns and tears over the last few hours, the golden sunlight seemed to calm her just a bit.
She walked over to the large window, thinking of the day she had saved Clark’s life, by pulling that blue kryptonite stake from his chest. And how, like the Egyptian god Rah, he had been reborn with the sun.

She had believed in the hero and the man that day, seeing them at last as one. Lois knew Clark would do all he could to make it out of the Phantom Zone. And no matter how badly he was hurt, he would be okay—but only if he made it back to Earth, where he could be healed by the rays of the yellow sun.

“You have to come back, Clark. I don’t know how to go on without you,” she whispered to the empty room.

Tess had brought her some Chinese food before she left for the evening, but Lois couldn’t bring herself to eat. For the next hour, she instead obsessively checked the communicator, hoping that it had picked up some noise. Now and then she’d hear some static, and she’d play it over and over again on the larger computer, trying to enhance it to hear something more substantial, but every time she was disappointed.

Torturing herself, she played the one sound clip they had, of what had sounded like Clark being wounded. She played out in her mind a million different scenarios about what could have happened, and how he could have survived. Only in her darkest moments did she wonder what would happen if he didn’t…

She glanced at Watchtower’s clock, and at the frozen countdown timer that was to have destroyed the gate. If she hadn’t stopped Tess, the gate would have been destroyed by now, and Clark would have been lost to her forever.

She comforted herself with the fact that at least there was still some hope he could return, that the gate was still intact.

Just like the rays of the sun that healed Clark, the light in Watchtower seemed to light on that sliver of hope.

Somehow, he’d make it back to her.

He just had to.

~L&C~

Tess came in the next day, and found Lois half-asleep at the consol.

Lois started awake when she heard Tess approaching. “We have to keep trying, Tess… maybe they will get the communicators working again,” she said sleepily, her hand reaching for the mouse that had almost grown attached to her hand during the night as she had checked and rechecked sound files.

“Lois,” Tess chided gently, seeing what a mess Lois was. “Go home. For at least a few hours. Get some sleep, and a shower… We’ll take turns at Watchtower, okay?”

“Home… what is home?” Lois said morosely. “My home is in some Kryptonian wasteland, Tess! I’m not going anywhere. Not until he comes back…”

“Lois, as a member of this team, I am ordering you out of here for a few hours,” Tess said in a voice that brooked no argument. “You will be sharper once you’ve had some rest. If anything comes through, you know I’ll call you. Just go home for a while… it will be all right.”

Eventually, Lois reluctantly nodded, knowing she wasn’t much use as worn out and upset as she was. “My head does feel a bit like a grease ball… I know I need a shower. Fine. We’ll take shifts. I’ll be back this afternoon, fresh as a daisy. And meanwhile, if anything happens, even if you think it’s minor, call me.”

“I will. I promise.”

~L&C~

The walk to the apartment was painful.

Her and Clark’s new apartment.

Where they were to start their life together…

How was she to face going there, knowing that Clark wouldn’t be there to greet her, may never—Lois refused to finish that thought.

He had to come back to her.

When Lois arrived, she stood at the door for a long moment, her hand on the doorknob, unable to turn it, afraid of facing the empty apartment full of their future, alone.

Home.

This was to be their home… and yet, could it be if he didn’t return?

Smallville is my home, Clark. Not this one, this Smallville, right here. You're all I'll ever need.

Tears came to her eyes, knowing that she’d never feel home again until she could be wrapped in Clark’s arms once more.

She looked around at the stacks of boxes, her eyes falling on her Whitesnake pillow that Clark had teased her about just yesterday.

Don't worry. My "for better or worse" will include your love of hair metal.

Lois grabbed the pillow, pushing several boxes aside to sit cuddled with it on the couch. She thought all her tears had fallen the night before, but suddenly her cheeks were wet again.

“You have to come back, Smallville. You have to.”

Lois cried herself to sleep, curled up amid the many boxes and waiting memories, snuggled close to her Whitesnake pillow.

~L&C~

When Lois awoke, she felt slightly disoriented, not yet used to the confines of the new apartment. For a short second, she almost forgot where she was, about Clark being trapped in the Phantom Zone. About the fact that she didn’t know when or even if he’d return.

But as realization hit, she suddenly reached for her cell phone. Had Tess called while she slept? Had anything happened?

But no new messages or missed calls were on her cell phone. It was the same as it had been this morning. Clark and Oliver were still in the Phantom Zone.

Lois needed to get back to Watchtower as soon as she could. She dug through a box labeled “bathroom” and found a towel. Clark had bought toiletries from the drugstore yesterday morning, after Lois had sent him out with a list. She found the bag on the kitchen table, and felt a little lurch in her heart as she looked at the contents. He’d gotten everything she’d ask for down to the letter.

“You are everything I’ve ever asked for, Smallville,” she said sadly, pulling out the shampoo, soap, and shower poof. “Which is why you have to come back.”

Lois took a shower and quickly got dressed, focusing on getting back to Watchtower as soon as she could. She thought she’d kill Tess if anything had happened while she was away that she hadn’t told her about.

Before leaving the apartment, Lois glanced around at all the boxes. She knew that the only way she’d get through this was to believe that somehow Clark would return.

Smallville was her home.

And their new home would be waiting for him when he returned.

She’d start unpacking the first box tonight.

~L&C~

“Find anything while I was gone?” Lois asked, stepping into Watchtower with a little more confidence then when she had left.

“No, Lois. Unfortunately not.”

Lois glanced at the computers, noting that nothing had changed since last night. “Tess, what are we going to do? I’m going to go crazy without having some way of trying to help them—“

“Well, I’ve contacted the rest of the League. We’re going to video conference here in a minute and see what they say. Maybe they can go in after Clark and Oliver… but Lois, they will probably decide against it,” Tess warned.

Lois nodded. “Well, let’s see what they say first, okay? If there’s a chance that we can go in after them, then we take it. We can’t give up on them, Tess. I can’t give up on them.”

“I know, Lois. We won’t.”

Suddenly, the conference screens turned on. Lois and Tess headed to the small semi-circle of computers as the League checked in, one by one.

John Jones appeared, shortly after Black Canary. Cyborg and Impuse checked in next, followed by Aquaman. They all seemed a bit surprised to see just Tess and Lois.

Tess quickly briefed them on what had happened in the Phantom Zone.

“Oliver followed Clark in. We lost communication with them shortly afterwards. The gate is still open, however, no one has ever gone to the Phantom Zone before without Clark. We don’t know what will happen if we send one of you there.”

Lois stepped forward. “Or if you could even find them. It’s a vast wasteland… miles of desert…” She suddenly turned to Tess. “Send me,” she said quietly, thinking the others wouldn’t hear her. “I know what it’s like there. I could go—“

“Lois, no.”

It was John Jones who had spoken. “You know that Kal-El wouldn’t want you there. Not when he is without his powers. Any one of us should go before you should.”

Lois faced them all defiantly. “Why not me? If Clark can sacrifice himself, then so can I, to find him.”

“And then what, Lois?” asked Tess, a bit of exasperation in her tone. “Even if you found him, you couldn’t necessarily help him. Clark will come back if he can.”

“It’s too risky for any of us to go. And we need heroes here on Earth, in case the gate can’t be closed,” said John. “Kal-El would want us to stay put. We’ll keep trying to reach them, but there is no reason for all of us to risk the Phantom Zone.”

Lois backed down, seeing they were right. She wouldn’t be able to help Clark even if she found him. But that didn’t mean she’d give up.

“Then Tess and I will keep an eye on things from Watchtower. We’ll continue to try and make contact with them.”

Tess nodded. “But with Clark and Oliver gone, we’ll need all of you to be more vigilant than ever.”

“We’ll do what we can to be sure Earth remains safe while Kal-El is away,” said Aquaman.

One by one, the heroes signed off, leaving Tess and Lois with the task of once again trying to reach Clark and Oliver in the Phantom Zone.

“Was there really no sign of them last night, Tess?” Lois asked pensively, heading back to the monitor where they had been trying to reconnect the communicators.

“No. But it doesn’t mean that they won’t make it, Lois. Look, I won’t give up if you won’t. We’ll do what we said, take turns monitoring the communicators.”

Lois nodded decisively. “Right.”

Tess started gathering her things. “That means you are in charge until tomorrow. I can make excuses for you at the Planet, but I have to show my face for at least part of the day.”

“I understand. We’ll split shifts. And on the weekend—“ Lois paused, realizing it was only Tuesday. How long would they have to wait before Clark and Oliver returned? It didn’t matter, she realized. She’d wait for Clark forever if she had to. “On the weekend we’ll both camp out.”

Tess dipped her head in assent. “I admire your determination, Lois. You know, I think I was wrong about you when we met.”

Lois smiled, her first since she had learned Clark had run off to the Phantom Zone. “Thanks. Back at ya.”

“Well, I admit I haven’t always played fair, or even always on the right side. But I always tried to,” she admitted, the small jut of her chin showing an air of defiance. “But Ollie…” Tess started, but couldn’t seem to finish.

“Means something to you,” Lois filled in for her.

Tess nodded. “I mean, I know we haven’t meant anything to each other for a long time, and I’m happy for him and Chloe—but yeah, I’d do whatever I can for him.”

“Then that just means we won’t give up.”

~L&C~

Moments after Tess left, Lois dug out what she had deemed her survival kit: slippers, a six pack of beer, a picture of her and Clark, and her Whitesnake pillow.

Normally she would have brought along a Whitesnake CD, but she didn’t want to risk missing anything coming through on the communicator. Besides, the pillow made her think of Clark, and it gave her something to hold that he had recently touched. Oddly, she felt like it was a tether to him, proof that he was still alive.

Lois ran through all the files Tess had accumulated since early that morning. There were only a few with anything to listen to, mostly full of static, but nothing as substantial as that horrible clip of what Lois was convinced was Clark getting wounded.

She refused to think the worst.

He was still alive. And he’d come back to her.

She had to hold onto that, or she’d go crazy.

Lois connected their communicator to the monitor, hoping against hope that she’d somehow connect to Clark or Oliver.

“Clark? Come in. This is –Lois…” she finished with surprising sincerity, first thinking she’d try to say she was Watchtower, but in the moment needing to reach out to that infinite space as herself. “Anybody listening?”

She waited… and waited.

Nothing. No static, not even a blip.

She knew how impossibly far and otherworldly the Phantom Zone was. It had been a miracle that they had had a connection at all.

But that didn’t stop her from wanting that connection again.

After a while, Lois opened a beer and began humming some Whitesnake to pass the time. Anytime she thought she heard a noise, she’d jump in her seat and replay the last looped recording.

Around midnight, and after about four beers, she had an intriguing thought. What if Clark could hear her, but just couldn’t respond himself?

Her heart lightened at the idea. She connected into the communicator, watching the screen for any indication of a response as she began to talk.

“Clark… if you can hear me---well, I just want to say I miss you,” she shook her head, realizing that she wanted to say more. Needed to say more. “No, it’s more than that. I miss us, what we’ve become together… You know, I think back on those years at the farm. How blind I had been. Not just to your abilities, but to you. I ignored you for as long as I could, you know? I mean, I always thought you were good-looking, but so many of those good-looking guys I had fallen for before had always turned into disasters… and besides, I never thought I could compete with Lana.”

She scoffed at herself, taking another sip of beer. “I know, it’s funny now. But I was intimidated by her for a long time… and you, well, I guess I just never thought that you and I could ever be more…”

She felt tears well up in her eyes, and hugged the Whitesnake pillow tighter. “But when I started falling for you… you know it took me by surprise, right? It happened even before I knew it. But the first time I acknowledged it was at Chloe’s wedding when we almost kissed. And I—I felt like such a fool when Lana reappeared. Anyway, enough about her… I just—well, it’s ancient history now, right?”

Lois put her slippered feet up on the consol, keeping an eye on the screen for any kind of response.
“And then when you came into the picture as the Blur… wow, looking back, I really think I was stupid for not putting it all together sooner. Some reporter I am, right?” She smiled. “I know what you’d say: ’You’re a great reporter, Lois.’ …And you’d be right, of course.”

She was quiet for a moment, contemplative. “Did I ever tell you what it meant to me, the moment you actually told me your secret? I had known for a while, as you now know, but in that moment—Clark, I thought my heart would break if you didn’t say something. I remember heading to the elevator, feeling as if you would be lost to me forever, separated as we were by your secret. And then—a miracle. You told me and I knew that we’d be okay. That we’d somehow figure out how to move forward together, no matter what came our way—even, through things like this…”

Lois opened another beer, staring at the screen until she could see her own reflection in it. “Bottoms up,” she said, waving the beer towards her reflection. “We’ll make it through, Clark. I have to believe that you will return. I can’t think of any other possibility, you see? I won’t give up on us – on you*. I just wish – or maybe I hope that you are listening to this. And that somehow it’s giving you the courage to continue and to find a way back to me, Smallville… because my only home is with you. Be it Kryptonian desert or the farm or our sweet little apartment in Metropolis…“ Lois looked around at the empty and quiet solitude of Watchtower, imagining her days here—without Clark. “But the truth is, it will only be a home if you’re there… Smallville…”

She felt tears roll down her cheeks. “I miss you,” she whispered, just wishing there was some sign, some ray of hope that could tell her that Clark was still alive. If only there was another anomaly from the communicator, some indication that her vigilance wasn’t in vain.

But Lois wouldn’t give up. Not without concrete proof that Clark was gone forever.

She wouldn’t give up, even if only the smallest ray of hope shimmered.

She couldn’t.

Heyy guys heres the start of my fourth Clois story and I'm really excited about this one:)!

Summary: Lois and Clark are married and are expecting a baby [I don't know why but I tend to write all my stories with these two already married or with a kid it must be a bore but I promise it's definately a different predicament;)] Doomsday appears in Metropolis leading the justice league into a battle which ends with the loss of a hero. Lois grieves over her loss and she has everyone there for her and for the baby but all the support in the world can't fill in that loneliness that yearns for her husband and so in a moment of desperation and loneliness, she does something that no one expected her to do and she's in for the shock and the relief of her life, but what she does has its consequences.

Note:
- I don't own anything.
- Every chapter in this story is titled after a song which inspired me to think up of every chapter (Seriously, each song inspired the plot for each chapter) so I suggest you guys check out these songs or listen to them while reading the chapter :)
- This story starts off on a very light tone, but warning it gets angsty
- I am really excited about this story so I would LOVEEE to hear all your critiques, comments, and reviewss I love reading them all:D!
- Enjoy!
Chapter 1: Sparks- Coldplay

My heart is yours. It's you that I hold on to. That's what I'll do.

Lois had been feeling very down on herself today as she walked into the Daily Planet, more like waddling as she realized in the shower that she couldn't see her feet past her ever growing belly. She sighed as she came in late as Clark was already sitting at his desk. She slowed down at the entrance as she saw he wasn't alone. Lois watched as Clark was sitting beside some other woman, younger looking, blonde, and wore a skirt that was so short she didn't even need to try to look up it. She raised her brow as she routinely rested her hand on her stomach as Clark was showing her something on his computer and said something that made her laugh. Lois took a deep breath and walked over to her desk. Once she was in sight, Clark noticed her immediately and grinned as she came to a halt before the two. The woman followed his gaze up to the very pregnant Lois. Clark straightened up, "Hey baby, you finally decided to show up."

Lois forced a smile as her eyes immediately went to the woman sitting next to him, holding out her hand, Lois spoke in a normal tone, "Hi, we haven't officially met I'm-"

"Lois Lane" the blonde cut in with a smile, she stood up and shook her hand, "The legendary intrepid reporter. Hi, I'm Andy."

Lois gave a small smirk as they continued to shake hands, Clark stood up, "Andy's an intern here at the Daily Planet, she just started today and Perry asked me to show her around and pretty much guide her on what to do..."
Lois furrowed her brows when Andy spoke up in a cheerful tone, "You can say Clark's become my mentor of all the how-to's of the Daily Planet." Her grin grew as she gripped Clark's shoulder, "Can't wait to see what else he has to offer."

Clark watched as Lois' eyes remained on Andy's hand gripping her husband's shoulder, she eyed Andy and nodded, "Well... I hope you enjoy your time here." She gave Andy an innocent shrug, "Don't get too comfortable." Andy furrowed her brows as she tilted her head confused, Lois grimaced at her, "That was a joke."

With that, Andy gave a laugh which Lois could clearly tell was fake, "Well I guess I'll go learn the filing system now. It was nice meeting you Lois." She turned to Clark and gave him a girly smile with a little wave, "Bye Clark." Clark waved bye as Andy walked away. Lois watched her as she moved her hips to the side, with her short skirt hiking up, and her long wavy blonde curls flying over her shoulders. Lois huffed in frustration as she sat herself down on her chair which made a creaking noise to which Lois scowled at. Meanwhile, Clark had been watching her the whole time, noticing her mood today.

"Is everything okay honey?"

"Mhm." Lois didn't make eye contact as she was sorting her papers. Clark waited, knowing Lois would definitely break the silence, "So... Andy is your intern?"

Clark nodded, holding back his amused smile, "Yea, Perry assigned her to me."
Lois raised her brows, pressing her lips together, "She seems nice... so you're going to be working with her from now on." It wasn't a question as much as it was a statement. Lois continued to rearrange the articles on her desk.

"Only in the office. You know you're my only partner in crime on the field."
Lois bit the inside of her lip, "She knows me as Lois Lane the reporter. Does she also know I'm Lois Lane-KENT? You're wife and the woman who's carrying your child?"

Clark chuckled, holding up his left hand in front of her, "I guess she figured it out by the way I was looking at you and the fact that I have my wedding ring on?"

Lois smirked, "That didn't stop her from hiking up her skirt in front of you."

Clark leaned back on his chair with an amused smile, "Are you jealous?"
Lois smacked her papers on her desk which surprised Clark, "Jealous? Why would I be jealous? Is it the fact that I feel like I look like a cow, the fact that I can't see my feet anymore? The fact that I was late for work because I spent 2 hours parading my closet, going through hundreds of outfits just to find one that makes me look a little sexier for you? No. Why would I be jealous that a hot young intern is so infatuated by you and can't take her hands or her gooey eyes off of you? No. The fact that she's going to be spending so much time with you? Her and her bimbo style? It probably takes her no effort to look that hot. Why would I be jealous when all I have to offer is wearing this stupid black dress which doesn't even look good anymore!" She suddenly broke down in tears after her rant. Covering her eyes with her fingers, Lois began to sob heavily as she scowled to herself, "Damn hormones!" Everyone who walked by her watched and whispered to one another about what was going on to which Lois noticed and yelled out, "Why don't you take a picture it'll last longer!" At that, everyone scurried as far away as they can.

Clark leapt off his seat and turned Lois' chair to face him as he kneeled in front of her. "Hey." Lois wouldn't look up at him as she continued to cry, Clark lifted her chin up as her eyes had gotten pink and her face was flushed, but god did she look beautiful when she cried. Clark gave her a warm smile, "I don't ever want you to think that baby. You're incredibly sexy Lois Lane, don't you ever forget that. I got really confused when you just described Andy cause I don't see any of that. You know why?"

Lois sniffled as she pouted her bottom lip, "Why?"

Clark wiped her tears away with his thumb, "Cause I only have eyes for one woman in this world. And that's you. That's my wife, and the mother of our unborn child. You think you look fat? I think you've never been more stunning than you are right now."

Lois grimaced as she rolled her eyes, "You're just saying that to make me feel better."

Clark chuckled shaking his head, "Never. You're gorgeous... and so hot." Lois laughed, as he smiled seductively at her. Lois thought he sounded ridiculous. How could he want her looking like this? Clark smiled up at her as she returned the smile. He leaned in and kissed her sweetly, wrapping his arms around her as she hugged him back tightly, feeling a warm sensation. When he pulled away he kissed her belly and then her forehead before going back to his desk.
Lois bit the inside of her cheek as she stared back at Clark, who was carried away with his work. She looked down and smiled at her stomach, feeling a little better about herself.
