Okay, so i've made my peice with the fact that Clark probably got the job because of Tess (even if it wasn't actually said), but i still don't understand why their desks are across from each other
she writes the front page, he writes obits that have to be covered in red marks... how are they even on the same floor in a huge building like that? can anyone offer any kind of explanation that isn't 'it's just a tv show'
p.s. my head turned a bit when she said he had talent after readig 1 obituary that she had covered in corrections... sorry but an obit that small does not show anything about his writing skills.

i cant say why they are that close to each other.... but as far as lois' compliment on his writing, i took it as she was just trying her hand at some flattery. i think she is starting to crush on clark so why not just sugar him up a bit?

Well, the DPīs always worked like that, Chloe was in pet obits and printed 3 bylines, 2 which I belive where headlines and she was still working in the basement, not taking a stab at CHloe or anything (please no CHloe vs Lois thread again) just pointing out that the DPīs guidelines seem all over the place in regards of position, I think realistically obit people dont print headlines and if he/she does, a promotion would be at hand.
As for the being across from eachother thing, I think perhaps its to fullfill the anvil they droped on us a couple of seasonīs ago "Ill probably end across the desk of the most clumsy reproter" (or something along those lines).

It's because it was the only free desk. ;)

Okay this is my theory on it. Well they sit across each other maybe because Clark Kent knows Lois well enough... that she will get herself into some sort of mess and he would have to bail her out of trouble. Plus my being on the main floor of the DP he gets a good view of the latest news that comes in, so he keeps track on whats happening in case he needs to rescue the day.
Hopefulsuicide, since you believe Tess landed the job for Clark it's also plausible that she wants to keep a good eye on him because she's positive he is hiding something.
Maybe Lois wasn't only referring to the orbit, but also Clark's investigative skills and how he tracked down Bette etc... Yeah, it is true you can't tell talent from one orbit but maybe Lois read some of Kent's work at the Torch also, but is too prideful to mention that he had talent back then.

They're across from eachother in Superman 1 and 2 so might as well have them across from eachother in smallville

well, the only way they could put Lois "above" him is for her to get out of the basement...they are both at the bottom, and she is his boss...his senior at least...not shure how much official rank she has over him...they could have, perhaps, put him in another room for the newbies...the Daily Planet's kiddie table...maybe that's where Jimmy's desk is...off in a closet somewhere...
and i think Lois' complement was based more on his performance while they were actually getting all the info on the story...;)
edit: for what it's worth, I'm hoping we DO get an explanation on how he got hired...who the heck interviewed him? it obviously wasn't Tess...

exactly, applying real world logic to this show doesn't work...
I think we all need to recognize that, and move on...

is she still in the basement? i figured since she keeps getting front page bylines, she has been promoted...

I think she gets front page bylines every now and then because she gets the biggest stories. She goes out and gets them with her reporter instincts. She is trying to become a big time reporter by scooping stories before everyone else and being put on the front page but right now I think she is still a nobody in that world.
Why are they across from each other? I think the answer is obvious they like looking into each others eyes duh!

okay, i think people are missing the point of the question... it's not why have they put them next to each other, that's obvious... it's how on earth can they be on the same level if he's a beginner and she's a front page writer who gets 'all the best stories'... but if im wrong and they are both simply at the bottom then fair enough

I think in an interview Erica said that Lois appoints herself Clarks boss but in reality she isn't. So, on the show Lois is just trying to look out for him the same way one of us would look out for a friend who started to work at the same company you did.
Also, last season Lois told Clark that he had a chance to fill Chloe's spot and she sat across from Lois and since Clark took her place then it is fitting that he sits at the desk Chloe used to use which was across from Lois.
As far as Lois being a front page reporter I just think she had the best story for the day and so they put her up on the front page with it. I think it was her first time on it? I don't know

i thought she said that chloe's place had been filled by someone on a lower level, and so he could fill that other persons spot... which is why she was surprised to find out he'd made it up to journalist level

Oh, I don't remember her saying that but if she did then.......maybe they asked the person who sat across Lois nicely to switch desks with Clark?
