View Full Version : What is your opinion of Tess Mercer?

I'm starting to like her. She has an evil look and I think her and Clark can spare with words. It will not be as good as it was with Lex but I think it will be interesting.

I think she needs to do something unforgivable. A good villian needs to be hated and right now I don't see her as that evil. I think if she does something outrageous than it'll make it interesting.

"I think she needs to do something unforgivable. A good villian needs to be hated and right now I don't see her as that evil. I think if she does something outrageous than it'll make it interesting."
I agree that that should happen, but in due time. I say make her less villainous right now so that we can bask in the villainy of the invisible hand of Lex some more, and make her more of a pawn to his game, albeit a conflicted pawn. I see little glimmers of uncertainty and conflict-in her eyes and brief looks. I saw it tonight when Clark said, "I saw what this job did to Lex, how it consumed him. I hope the same doesn't happen to you." Tess had that little insecurity in her eyes. So I'd like if they explored that rather than try to make her too villainous from the start, because then I feel they're trying TOO hard to make her a "replacement" to Lex, which we all know can't happen. So if they have a totally different route where she's confused and conflicted and trying to fulfill Lex's will but also is falling for Clark and the sense of hope she feels around him, then it'll be that much more complex and fascinating to see what will happen with her...and if she does fall to darkness, it'll be really intense. Perhaps she won't even fall to the same kind of darkness as Lex? Maybe she'll be like Gretchen on "Prison Break"-intitially working for the head of the supervillains, but then is betrayed by him, and once that happens, all bets are off. She could become a horribly psychotic vigilante. Who knows? So many routes to explore. All I'm saying is that I don't want them to try to copy or top Lex in the sheer audacity of evil she possesses yet.

I'm starting to like her more. She was great in this episode, especially near the end and standing up to that henchman that compared her to Lex Luthor. I loved her scene with Plastique and I'm intrigued by the glimpse of her from the trailer for next week. I have to see more of her though.

Tess Mercer is fun to watch - I especially loved the part were she told her secretary that she thinks Clark is a liar; I totally wasn't expecting it. It is those types of scenes that show me she definitely has elements of Lex in her... that being said, I am undecided on how evil I think she should be on the show.
If I remember correctly, in Superman I, she actually saves Superman by helping him out of the kryptonite-filled pool. Yes, her motives were a bit selfish, she wanted her mother to be saved, but the point is she did something good and against Lex's wishes. So, maybe she is somewhere in between good and evil, maybe in the comic books she is a lot more violent (I haven't read much about her), but either way, I am interested in her character. She definitely isn't boring - and I still haven't missed Lex.

Great point on her saving Supes in Superman 1, but that was actually TessMACHER not Tess Mercer...it's weird how they changed the names and mixed them. Mercer sounds like Mercy who was Lex's assistant in the Superman Animated Series and comics, and Tess obviously is derived from the aforementioned Tessmacher in the movies...
Now the question is, why would they change her name? I have this theory that perhaps she really is Lex's long lost sister Lena from the comics, and she's guising herself under this alias...why else would she inherit the keys to the Luthor kingdom if not for the twisted familial bond? They could even bring Lucas back into it, keep the crazy Luthor family alive! But only time will tell...

Oh! That's really good information. I hadn't even realized one lady was Mercer and the other was Macher, and I certainly didn't know about a character named Lena.

I like Tess. I think they did good. It's not good as having Lex, but Tess Mercer is definitely a devious, intelligent villain. And of course, hot :p. And like Lex, she believes she is doing everything for the greater good. Did she not say to Bette, "We'll make a hero out of you yet"? I hope I wasn't imagining that.

ms tessmercer!!!!!!!, I just needed to see what that sounds like, but this thread seems somewhat familiar, you'll probably find a similar question when you go on the internets today from people wondering what your impression of sarah palin is, whom I think coincidentally would make a great ms tessmacher, and she knows the arctic already!

What was up with her last line......we can make Hero out you (or something like that) ? Do think there going to be abit more to that?
And if Choloe is taking over Isis to help "people with skill's"(as Davis sugested) ....why would the let Plastique go , instead of helping control her power's?
Just a few tid-bit's that did not connect for me with that storyline at the end of the episode.

Tess Mercer is based on both Ms. Tessmacher and Mercy Graves. I don't think she introduce Otis. I re-watched Superman II a couple of weeks back, and am so, that is such a lame character.

Different characters. Tess Mercer is more like Mercy when she took the LexCorp on the JLU. After alll, that's why the PS3 gave the Mercer name to Tess.

Personally, she does nothing for me (but she is hot). I am a die-hard Lex (M.R.) fan *go figure!!!!* and her presence in HIS mansion somehow annoys the hell outta me. I might take to her a bit better if she weren't an obvious "space replacment" for Lex. THAT is the part that just bends my butt backward. If she were just some chick that came in & bought &/or started running the DP and she was evil to boot, well ok then. But she's CLEARLY a "replacement" for Lex. And it just ain't working for me.

I can agree. Her directness with the croney at the mansion and that unwavering look kinda let you know she is playing for real and ain't taking no S**T from anyone.
The talking to Bette at the end was almost scary in its simplicity. She said what needed to be said to gain trust and she was as cold and manipulative as Lex was. I'm anxious to see where this goes.

I like Tess she is becoming multi-layered. When she is forceful and direct her eyes flash and appear darker. When she is flirty, she's soft and her eyes are soft and lighter. Well, if that makes sense:lol: I'm also liking the TW and CF chemistry.
Anyway, I like how Cassidy is giving us glimpses of Tess' character. I look forward to finding out more about Tess Mercer.

Well, I don't know if others addressed this, but:
- Tess is referring to, I think, the "Injustice League". It's basically the anti-JL. Instead of a bunch of super-powered people getting together to be heroes, they get together to become villains.
Tess is, I think, using the term "hero" because she suffers from the same issues Lex had: She thinks her work is noble, somehow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Injustice_League#Original_League
- Chloe didn't help Bette because it was too late with Bette. Bette had already killed someone and so Chloe had to give her up to the cops. What Chloe's point was that she wanted to help people deal with their powers before they got to the point where they used their powers to kill people.

me personally, her intentions were good for helping bette, but i think she's up to something.

I think she is a plant in Lex' organisation! Oliver planted her since he couldn't stop Lex any other way! You know destroy your enemy from the inside! Howver as Angel proved it, that method doesn't always work, so we'll just have to wait and se what Tess does next!

Voted "need to see more". What I've seen so far is promising. Cassidy seems like a really good fit for the show. I just hope they just don't try to make her the "female Lex", and instead let her character have some important distinctions. That's my one concern. And yes, she is easy on the eyes (though SV never disappoints in that department)

I agree, she needs to get out of Lex's mansion. Why is she even living there? Seriously, she has NO reason to be living there, it's his private home. I hated seeing her sitting by the fireplace. Is she sleeping in his bed too? Also, some of her dialogue is very Lex-like. All the stuff about it being destiny that Clark saved her. Where have we heard that before? She should have her own place, and carve out her own identity, rather than occupy so much of Lex's space.

This character is on the verge of making the series unwatchable. This character is supposed to be the heavy, standing in as a counterweight to almost-Superman. Are you kidding me? This actress has all the gravitas of a feather and the screen presence of a daytime soap-opera hack. Even with all the silly crazy stuff that happens in SV, these new episodes show just how vital Rosenbaum was to the show's success. I'm guessing it's possible to have a temporary stand-in villain, but it needs to be someone that can bring a credible threat to the screen. This actress is clearly not up to the task.

For me, the jury is still out on Tess.
She started off as grating (IMO) but has slowly been downgraded and added a touch of "intriguing". So yeah, I'll continue to see where she goes.
But one thing is for sure: she's nowhere near as interesting as Lex was.

Lex's character in smallville sucked. There I said it. He flip-flopped between good and evil too much. The only good thing was that it was Michael Rosenbaum acting so it made it watchable, the guy was great. But the way he was written? Lex sucked, just as people couldn't see Clark becoming Superman, I didn't see this guy becoming Lex Luthor.
Earlier seasons he was way more interesting, later he just flip flopped between a good and a bad guy. His whole undermining thing really was stupid, the only time he actually became a threat to Clark was all the way towards the end of last season, until then he was just a confused child.
All in All I would rate Lex's character with a C-.
