Discuss the television ratings for "Plastique" here!

I was way off with my prediction for Odyssey. Given the ratings we got last week, it is possible that we could stay around or above four million. Hopefully the ratings last week weren't merely due to the curiosity factor.

The competition starts this week (and it killed 90210 and Privileged), so I'm really not too sure. We have Plastique, and new series regular, and Clark's first day on the job, so that could help bring in the viewers. And hopefully good WOM spread, and the encore on Sunday evening and being on iTunes helped get the new season some exposure.

I'm hoping we stay above four million viewers...

That's what I was thinking too. Survivor premiere is also at 8pm.:/
Last year, DVR'd Live+7 added close to a million viewers to Smallville's ratings,
so I hope Odyssey tops 5 mil.

If anyone is interested, the 1st DVR ratings for CW posted Sept.22:

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/09/22/bones-has-largest-dvr-audience-top-model-greatest-dvr-increase/5252#more-5252

Results take about 2 or 3 weeks, so Smallville isn't on it. ANTM, GG and 90210.(at least CW may not fold):/

Here's the averages of the CW's shows so far...

Smallville (1 episode): 4.34 million
Supernatural (1): 3.96
America's Next Top Model (5): 3.94
90210 (5): 3.53
Gossip Girl (4): 3.44
One Tree Hill (4): 3.26
Priviliged (3): 2.29

I used only final ratings. I'm also not counting Smackdown since it will be leaving the CW next week, encores, or repeats.

Actually, CW's other shows are doing better this year. If we want a Smallville S9 (which I do) then CW has to stay afloat. But, yeah, I want Smallville to *trounce* the other shows:)

It's probably accurate. Smallville actually HAS competition this week (as opposed to last week when it had none). Not to mention that it was the premiere, and this episode isn't. I don't think it'll dip below 4 million, but it'll be close.

Not to be a downer, but this Thursday SV has to compete with the season premiere of Ugly Betty (on ABC), My Name is Earl (on NBC) and Survivour (on CBS) so that's some pretty stiff competition. I would guestimate that the show will bring in almost 4 million, but the numbers will be recovered once the DVR stats are accounted for.

scifigirl

I'm guessing 3.6-3.9 million.

Odyssey got 4.34 million, with the traditional premiere spike and no competition. I don't see Plastique doing much over 4 million, if that.

Early Thursday Nielsen Ratings: Survivor and Grey’s Anatomy; Old But Not Dead (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/09/26/early-thursday-nielsen-ratings-survivor-and-greys-anatomy-old-but-not-dead/5333)

Posted on 26 September 2008 by Robert Seidman
Remembering as always that these numbers are very preliminary (and also not nearly as much fun since they lack total viewers and demos) here are some early metered market numbers from Thursday night.
Grey’s Anatomy had an 11.0/17 (household rating/share) for its two hour premiere. If those numbers hold up, it would be down a bit from the two hour season finale (which scored an 11.8/19 and 18.09 million viewers in the final numbers last May ) and down even more from its premiere last September when it pulled a 13.2/20 and 20.9 million in the final numbers. And then, it was airing against a new CSI, last night CSI was a repeat. The two hour finale in May also didn’t run against a fresh CSI either though.
Survivor is experiencing attrition as well, but the old girl is long in tooth and still had a 7.5/12 from 8pm-10pm. Last year in the final numbers, Survivor China debuted to a 9.0/15. But both the Survivor or the Grey’s premieres last year seemed to only be one hour.
My Name is Earl pulled in a Knight Rider-esque 4.3/7 and The Office rose to a 5.8/9 in a one hour premiere from 9p-10pm and the tale for The Office will be in how it does in the 18-49 and 18-34 demos – which we imagine will be good. We won’t see that data for at least another hour (it’s 7:25am PDT as I write this).
Gordon Ramsay seems to have finally had a bad night as two episodes of Kitchen Nightmares only drew a 3.2/5 between 8pm-10pm. Meanwhile on the CW, Smallville had a 2.8/4 and Supernatural a 2.5/4.

tariksam
09-26-2008, 09:05 AM
You missed key info:

Meanwhile on the CW, Smallville had a 2.8/4 and Supernatural a 2.5/4. Last week in these same preliminary metered market numbers, Smallville had a 2.9/5 and Supernatural a 2.7/4, so it looks like both mostly held up versus increased competition.

All Smallville has to do is stay above 4 million for the first half of the season. Then the key is having a couple of really big episodes during that time that TPTB can promote to bring in more viewers, like "Justice" in season 6 and "Cure" in season 7(because of Dean Cain).

mistaguitarmasta
09-26-2008, 10:22 AM
4.10 is respectable enough. You have to take into account that this show gets a lot of casual viewers who just say "Oh this is a Superman show, let's take a look" as they channel surf. They don't know who Al & Miles are. They don't know who PS3 are. They don't know that there was a change in leadership this season. They may have casually watched the show casually in past seasons and decided they didn't like certain things (Clark making too little practical progress) and stopped watching all together. In other words, some of the mistakes made under AlMiles may negatively affect viewership among people who don't realize that there are new people at the helm who are taking the show in a fresh direction.

Against real competition, Kitchen Nightmares just got crushed in both hours (were they both orginial episodes?, my data is conflicting), shedding almost a third of its viewers and demo adults from last week (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/09/19/thursday-september-18-flashpoint-nightmares-and-supernatural-score/5193). Compared to that carnage, Smallville’s loss of only 6% of its viewers and a tick in each demo (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/09/19/thursday-september-18-flashpoint-nightmares-and-supernatural-score/5193) seems positively heroic.

So, you really didn't expect Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk leaving to have an impact? John Glover being gone too, effectively eliminating the Luthor story which is what many, many fans were watching for? You really, seriously thought Smallville would be doing the same as last year? Come on.

Yay for 4 Mil.

Competition was pretty steep, so I think all in all we were pretty solid.

Also, through various other means of viewing the episode, you can also add AT LEAST another 100000 to that count, so I think its pretty solid.

So am I, but it sounds positive. Just going by this year. Was there the big drop-off some were predicting after the premiere last week? It doesn't look like it. And I feel, comparing it to last season, is unfair considering the loss of MR and KK. To think that those two didn't have fans and that the stories they were involved in (which are now at an end) weren't in large part why their fans were still watching, is I think ignoring a very reasonable, big why there is a discrepancy (from last year to now). If the show starts to tail off week by week this year, then yes, I think an argument can be made. But, not for Season 7 (or 6, 5, and earlier) vs. Season 8. MR and KK are gone. I think it matters.

Considering that it was up against a few Season premieres, that is a GREAT number for Smallville! Add in the fact that it ALMOST beat a FOX show, which everyone who criticizes the show points towards that network as one it "would never survive on," I am even MORE impressed. Finally, add in the loss of fans who like Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, John Glover, and Laura Vandervoort, along with almost NO promotion by the CW, and the 8th season is looking up!

I think that if the CW airs that promo during their Monday-Wednesday shows, SV will get a lot of young female viewers. And, of course, the GA fans will watch.

Btw, SV tied with FOX for 4th in viewers. :)

I hadn't factored in the debates. I'm thinking more that the GA origin stuff will entice the more casual viewers. That and I thought Plastique was a relatively strong episode as far as propelling the season arcs forward.

There was an interesting conversation going on at the ratings message board (PIFeedback). It seems that the CW was planning to end SV at the Upfronts, but last week, Dawn Ostroff herself called Marc Berman (the owner of that website) and told him that SV was not ending. Craig also gives some information.

Andrew, thanks for the info, I would have missed it! I'm glad it's on the side of NOT ending Smallville. I am impressed that DO thought Smallville important enough to call Marc Berman to clear it up. Also glad Craig commented. Rumors are so rampant, let's just keep nipping them in the bud!

Wonder how Craig knew KryptonSite was being misquoted? He seems to show up wherever he is mentioned!..... Super Powers, maybe?

Wow, that was interesting! And hurrah for Dawn saying that Smallville would NOT be ending. I might, just might, change my mind about her.

Well it's a good thing, but could be a bad thing. I've been saying for a while- and still am saying- that I want a season 9. I love my SV, and I dont want it to end! But only if TW signs on. On that thread, Craig said that they were possibly grooming Justin Harltey to become the lead replacement if TW doesnt sign. If they ever did that, I would be so so sad. Smallville needs to end with Clark Kent!

^Like I said in that thread, I don't care if they make JH the lead, just don't call it SV.

Smallville 4.18
Gossip Girl 3.5
90210 2.9

This makes me happy. I wish Smallville could do better against the other networks but in season 8 that's hard to do. Sigh. People give up and move on not realizing that old doesn't always equal bad.

People gave up mid season 5, check the plunging ratings. The start of season 5 did a reversal on bad season 4 ratings but after seasons 6 and 7 the numbers appear to have leveled off to the die hards. Unfortunately I'm in for the long haul to see how it FINALLY ends.
The good that seems to be coming out of this season is that Lois is not just a couple of boobs and putdowns. Erica has been excellent on screen and in her promotion of SV. I've always stated her character was brought on board too soon but NO one would have guessed we'd be here at season 8. Especially after the wReckoning episode.
Now, I'm ready for CLois to proceed to where we ALL know it's heading, just as long as it done well, very unlike the Chlark and Clana.
I do expect to see ratings in the 3's before long. What a fall from Hidden and Aqua. I'm not a comic buff so all these new characters are only FOTWs for me. :\

jwm, You figure SV will get a little bounce from being scheduled against the debates? I think it might.

Why, cause you think folks won't watch the debates? In my area, "SV" is scheduled at 8:00 and the debates start at 9:00, so I don't really have a choice to make... but, even if I did, I'd watch the debates & Tivo "SV".

So, to compare:

Season 8:

"Plastique" - 4.18 (no final numbers, yet)

Season 7:

"Kara" – 4.586 (final numbers were 5.04)

Season 6:

"Sneeze" – 4.06 (final numbers were 4.05)

To me, this is pretty amazing. First of all, there's the fact that it's the 8th season and it gets almost zero promotion from it's network.

Not only is it holding up fairly well in comparison to previous years, it's even doing better than it did 2 years ago. And this in spite of series losing 2 of it's leads (MR and KK) and those fans more than likely did not tune in that only tuned in for MR and KK. So, this means that the vast majority of "SV" fans came back for S8 - not just the premiere, but the 2nd episode, and these fans had to come back not for Lex or Lana, but for the characters that exist in S8. (I have to believe that the majority came back for Welling/Clark.)

Anyway... my point is that I'm really happy with the ratings & it's no surprise that PS3 (and D.O.) are thinking of S9.

I just meant that nowadays it seems like the tv viewing audience in general has ADD, not just when it comes to Smallville. Not as many people commit for the long haul; once things lose their new, shiny, young luster then let's automatically discount it. It's like a typical Hollywood marriage nowadays. I'm grateful for the die hards, who stick it out despite all the bumps and unexpected forks in the road. By the time it ends, it'll be quite a ride. And yeah, exactly because of the ADD tv audience, a lot of people are probably amazed and confused that Smallville, a show about a comic book hero, is still around in it's eighth year and consequently we will see ratings in the 3's. And it's their loss because old does not automatically equate bad.

you think folks won't watch the debates?I don't know how the debates will affect ratings. SV will loose some viewers obviously but it's possible those viewers will be more than made up for by folks who typically watch one of the big networks Thursday nights and aren't interested in the debates. And like you mentioned the Eastern and Pacific times zones (which I'm guessing compromise about 80% of viewership) won't have to compete with them so whatever there is impact might be minimal.

"Sneeze" – 4.06 (final numbers were 4.05)I thought Sneeze came in at around 4.5.

I pulled it from K-site's thread from that season... did I quote it wrong?

This is great, considering SV was competing with big season premieres and that this is not a premiere, the scarce advertisement AND the fact that we lost 2 of our main three, specially two characters with relatively big fan bases, I honestly think, we couldnt expect better. a really small decrease between the season premiere and the second episode, usually the diference is bigger.

I might as well be changing my mind about her, since I as well want a ninth season.
