View Full Version : So what did you think of Tess?

I don't know she didn't really do it for me. But then again no one could ever replace lex.

For me it was too much like they were trying to make her a female version of Lex, which I would have prefered they made her her own person rather than a carbon copy.

I liked her A LOT. :D She didn't seem like a Lex Luthor carbon copy IMO especially in the opening scene. Usually, Lex would've just walked in there and started barking orders at the guy, but Tess did her own thing when she walked in there with the coat, introduced herself, and then started barking orders.
Then again, I didn't see the whole episode yet (just the teaser and the opening credits before I had to go), but I'm going to watch the whole thing tomorrow to get a better feel of her.

You might be on to something. The only way she could stay loyal to Lex, if she is in fact into women, would be her complete disinterest in him sexually. I can see it, but who knows. I thought she did pretty well. I sense something even more psychotic in her than I ever did in Lex, to be honest.

There could be more to it, actually.
Maybe she's the only one who knows he's alive. How and why could she just show up and take over for Lex if he didn't tell her to?

Yeah, I think she could have benefitted from an earlier introduction. Like Ana-Lucia's cameo during the first season of Lost. But you don't see that very often on TV shows.

Definitely too early to tell, but it wasn't a horrible introduction. I actually kind of like that she wasn't introduced last season. Plus, I can totally see Lex keeping her as a secret protege. It adds to the mystery and is totally in keeping with his dark twisty self.

I'm not sure... it's just such a sudden, abrupt change. We're all used to Lex.. I mean after 7 years... it'll take awhile for me to get adjusted to Tess. No one can ever replace Lex. I wish MR had never left the show

The actress was average, but the character was really lame. It’s all about her connection to Lex, without ever seeing Lex. It’s not even slowly building up to anything, as we’ve probably already seen Lex for the last time.
If Lex can no longer be part of the show, that's fine. But that means it’s time to focus on other villains like Brainiac, Bizarro, Mxyzptlk, Zod, Doomsday, or introduce new ones.... But to focus on this character who suddenly came from out of nowhere, and is all about her connection to Lex and nothing interesting about herself, is about the lamest character possible to create.
smallvillefreak24
09-18-2008, 08:35 PM
I like her fine but it just feels so wrong. Lex was a legacy of Smallville you can't jsut replace him. We have so much invested in him I jsut feel cheated. Like how come we never met her before and why her. lex is "missing" and will jsut never return wtf.,. you can't jsut walk up and replace lex. .... i wish they didn't try.. but maybe it will work out who knows

I'm beginning to wonder if Tess Mercer is Smallville's version of Mercy Graves. I don't know if Mercy was in the comics, but in the Superman animated series, Justice League, and Superman:Doomsday she was Lex's right hand woman. There seems to be a resemblance...
SnowBird
09-18-2008, 09:17 PM
She is okay. I'm going to have to get use to her but then I always have to get use to new actors introduced into Smallville. She needs to grow into her evil character. I don't feel she is replacing Lex the person but rather replacing him as a villian.

I think it would have been so unbelievably awesome if they would have replaced Lex with Morgan Edge & Intergang this season. Then they could have had Smallville's version of the JLA (Ollie, Clark, Bart, Victor, AC & Black Canary) vs. Smallville's version of Intergang (Aethyr, Nam-Ek, the true messed up Bizarro, and about 3-4 meteor freaks) headed by Edge. I could care less if they used Bergin for Edge instead of Rutger Hauer. Both actors did a tremendous job at portraying Edge. And SV's Edge, knowing about Clark, would have been so much more interesting and dangerous. Too bad!

She was okay, but she's copying much of MR's stoic moves and delivery, which I think is wrong, she should do her own thing. As others have said, I would have preferred them introducing a proper villain like the Intergang, Doomsday whatever. She's only there because of her connection to Lex, she has no real reason to be Clark's adversary.
She'll never replace Lex Luthor.

I was pleasantly surprised, although I'm going to have see her in several more episodes and how they develop her character before completely deciding.
I have to say, she really looked the part in the premiere . . . much more so than she did in that first headshot we saw of her in the off season.

I liked her. She has a certain vibe to her that seems interesting.
And that scene towards the end where she was gazing at the Luthor family crest and the Veritas symbol with that "look" on her face seemed interesting. Hinting at her obsession with Lex, perhaps?
And when she sat down at Lex's desk and started feeling it, I got a creepy vibe too. And I liked how she seems to have good lines too. I think she's going to be an interesting addition, and I'm eager to see where her storyline leads.
And yes, for those who are speculating about it, she is a homage to both Tessmacher from the movies and Mercy from the comics and animated series. ("Tessmacher" + "Mercy" = "Tess Mercer"). If I remember correctly, TPTB actually did say when they announced her that she was going to be a homage to two different characters from the DCU.

Anyway, I hate to be negative, but I didn't like her. I don't know why, she didn't do it for me, I didn't hate her character of course not, but I didn't find her Interesting, at least not yet. I'm more looking forward to see Doomsday, him I do find Interesting.

I was expecting a female Lex, but I didn't see it.
She was supposed to be shrewd and conniving, but I didn't see any of it. The only thing that resembled a "Lex-ism" (as it were) was finding and retrieving the crystal, and keeping the information to herself - I can totally see Lex acting exactly the same way, in fact with the same scene.
In fact...now that I think about it - that exact scene already happened!! Think about Lex finding Brainiac's hard drive in "Zod"!
Anyway, I just wasn't that impressed with CFs performance...but I'll give her a few episodes...she had some big shoes to fill.

Why does she need to live in the mansion? Isn't it privately owned by Lex? Just because she's taken over the business, doesn't mean she should be living in Lex's private house. That's a bit much. Will she be sleeping in his bed too?

with the others on here who would have liked to see some Intergang, Bizarro, etc. brought into the story. Honestly, I love MR/Lex Luthor, but it seemed like there was not much more to develop in his story, and with MR leaving, the show was given an opportunity to show how Clark handles other adversaries. Instead, it seems like they just dropped a girl in his shoes and are going to continue on like nothing happened. Like redRound said, its a little ridiculous that she's living at the mansion, practically living Lex Luthor's life.
I don't want to sound negative, but I was hoping for a new villians(s) to shake things up this year, and only got more Lex Luthor, albeit in less interesting, less menacing girl form.

Just in case I missed it somewhere in this Thread, I wanted to comment on what Regan said to Tess about the Information he'd found on her. He said that he learned that she was a person who rose to leadership after being Self-Taught in a Louisiana swamp, then going on to study and earn a degree at a prestigeous, well-known university. Well, I don't like that 'Louisiana' comment at all. Where do they get their information about Louisiana from? Yes, there's swampland about 2 miles west of where I live, and I've lived in Louisiana most of my life, except for a couple years out of state during my hubby's military tour, but I have Never heard of a "Swamp House". They made it sound like it was something more unusual than a house that was built in the swamp. There are Definitely some unique things about Louisiana that I'm very proud of. Maybe I'm just a little too sensitive about things uninformed people say about Louisiana. We already have so much stigma attached to various Louisiana lifestyles.
There Are still people who choose to live in the swamp. They are few in number now, but it's a "lifestyle" that doesn't require a 'formal' education, but do perform 'Services' that've been proven beneficial to our ecomomy. They have specialized survival skills that afford them the opportunity to live there, more or less undisturbed by much of the rest of us who've embraced society. We still have a goodly number of illiterate people whose lack of education dictates their lifestyle, however, if anyone who was raised under those conditions had strong enough 'dreams' and Ambitions to strive for more education and learn whatever they can to move away from 'that' lifestyle, they are to be commended for their strength of character and determination.

I dont like her. I think she is just a filler character so that the fans dont complain that no one is in charge of Lex's estate and what not. I find her pretty unneccecary. Davis, on the other hand is doing a great job filling up Lex's role as a villian, Sam as a great actor. But in my opinion, no actor is as good as Michael on that show.

I don't like her, I certainly don't trust her and I don't want her to mess with Clarky or Lois or even Chloe and Jimmy. I don't even like the fact that she seems to treat Ollie like cr*p.
I suppose that makes her great for the 'new villain' of the show then...quite refreshing from the same old same old Lex. Now we've got a shiny new toy we have to figure out. Hmmm, let the investigating begin!
