These two never interacted so how could he have his powers?

They met each other in the finale (or near it) of season 1. DL was with Nikki, everything else is hazy because I havn't actually sat down and watched the episode properly.

How Peter discovered that he absorbed the ability to phase is hazy. I don't think he saw DL phase before.
