I am completely a Season One Chlarker! It didn't surprise me. I shipped Chlark the first time I watched Season 1. The surprise this time was that I LOVED Clana friendship and liked Lana. A lot. :eek: LOL!
Anyway, watching Season One again, the end of the season really reminds me of Some Kind of Wonderful. Not only in the development of Chlark romance but also Clana friendship.
In the film Keith (Clark) can't see the forest for the trees and is obsessively in love with Amanda Jones (Lana Lang) while Watts (his best friend or Chloe) pines away for him. Finally Watts helps Keith arrange the perfect date between himself and Amanda. It goes wonderfully. However, Amanda can see how much Watts loves Keith and steps aside. Keith is then figuratively struck by lightening and realizes that Watts is a girl and beyond that... he loves her. :D
Of course the parallel isn't direct. Chloe pulls the passive aggressive card on Clark so we don't get to see how faithful Clark would have been to his choice to date Chloe. But there are a lot of similarities.
Lana has some of the most insightful quotes about Clark and Chloe.
Lana: "Sometimes the right person can be right in front of your eyes and you never even know it."
On Smallville I think Lana was realizing that Clark might be the right guy for her at the same time as she was acknowledging that Chloe might be the right girl for Clark. So it's not a direct parallel but it reminds me of the nice and easy friendship that grew between Keith and Amanda. Also Amanda didn't really fit into the rich and popular crowd at school as much as it seemed at first. That's a lot like Lana's struggle to find her own identity away from cheer leading and other people's expectations.
Chloe is Clark's best friend with two passions... Clark and Journalism. Watts is Keith's best friend with two passions, drums and Keith.
Chloe even helped Clark get ready for a date with Lana once.
And Chloe picking out her pink dress for the formal reminds me of Watts picking out the diamond earrings.

ETA: And how could I forget FIRST KISS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhzEzaYXxdo). I guess from SV purposes this kiss is comparable to the Clana kiss in RED. But Chloe WAS Clark's first kiss. :) That "missing Chloe" monologue from Clark is one of the best things about Obscura.
