Firefly/Serenity Fan looking to get into Buffy

So I've been putting this off for foreeeever, but I was never a "Buffy watcher." I remember tons of ads for it over the years on TV, but never quite got around to seeing it on TV. (I am really, really bad at watching TV shows when they're actually on TV, even the great ones.)

Since then I've become a huge fan of Firefly and Serenity, and now I want to see what all the hype was about. I love Joss Wheden's works, and if Buffy is as good as Firefly, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

So where do I start? I was going to get all the seasons of Buffy and watch them, but I don't know where this "Angel" series fits in. They were broadcast partly at the same time? So should I mix between the two? Or is it ok to watch Buffy from start to finish then Angel?

Any advice is appreciated. I'd rather not spoil myself a lot trying to find out what order I should be watching this stuff. :X

(As a side question, I can find out quickly enough, but I don't know how many seasons/episodes went into these 2 shows. How long did Buffy and Angel run?)

It's probably best to start off with watching Buffy Seasons 1-3.

Basically the break down is

There are certain episodes that are cross-over episodes, so it would be good to watch them back to back. One of the posters described it well in the Angel thread. Although maybe you will like one and not the other.

There is really a mixture fans on here. Some only liked Buffy, some only liked Angel. Many liked both of them (I am one of them, but I personally liked Angel better).

There is also some people who love everything Whedon. I personally wasn't able to get into Firefly but I know there are plenty of people whole loved it on here.

There are 12 seasons overall, 7 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 5 seasons of Angel, with Seasons 4-7 of the former and 1-4 of the latter happening concurrently. There are some pretty important crossovers, indeed, once Angel departs Sunnydale for his own series. Angel himself continues to be a recurring guest character at certain times in Buffy, while characters like Buffy herself and others in her cast guest on Angel (some even eventually becoming regulars). There are quite a few different ways you could go about watching the series; you could watch just Buffy w/t specific Angel crossover eps, just Angel (providing Buffy's first 3 seasons are viewed before it) w/t specific Buffy crossover eps, or you can watch the whole shabang; I'm assuming you'll be wanting to go with the third option. In that case, I'm going to help ya' out with a very extensively-worked-on episode guide of mine for the Buffyverse, definitely put to good use. Do remember that the 1992 Buffy movie, while providing an origin story for Buffy (which isn't entirely given in her own series), it's very much non-canon and not needed in the slightest, so feel free to ignore that and go with the following.
