Season 5: Episode 22 - "Vessel" - Lex is the vessel for Zod, and Clark can stop Zod, if he kills Lex. Lana stands by her man, and Fine releases an electronic virus.
Season 6: Episode 22 - "Phantom" - A Phantom Zone escapee seeks a bodily host, and Lex seeks the beings DNA for his army. Clark tells Lana the truth, Martian Manhunter returns, Chloe's powers surface, and so does a bizarre other-realm Clark Kent.
Season 7: Episode 20 - "Arctic" - Kara tells Lex he is destined to defeat the Traveler and offers to take him to the Fortress to learn how. Clark is stunned that Kara would go to Lex but it is revealed that Brainiac is impersonating Kara while she’s trapped in the Phantom Zone. Chloe is arrested and Lana awakens from her comatose state. Clark and Lex face off in the Fortress and Lex learns Clark’s secret.

Personally, Nothing had beaten season 4 finales, despite me not liking season 4 as a whole, the fact that we knew in 4 months we were getting the FOS was awesome, it made me look forward more to the next season then previous finales

breaks tonight and had to keep pausing as I watched.
However, it did catch up, and the ending was just so...so WOW!!

I think it's right up there with Commencement.

I'm pretty disappointed to see the lack of votes for tempest. I mean, come on guys! Lex standing over Lionel, maybe to let him die... Jonathan running after Nixon who knows Clark's secret into a raging storm to stop him from exposing Clark... and best of all, Clark running off to Lana just as she's picked up by the tornado... I get goosebumps every time I see Lana bang on that window as she's yelling "Claaaaark!" Great cliffhangers.

Phantom was great, the fight between Clark and Bizarro Clark was fun and the end hinted that Bizarro was permanently in his true form...Of course afterwards, we were left with a cheesy only-in-the-sun Bizarro. Bizz not acting like Bizarro would have been forgivable if he at least kept his true form. ahhh...

As with many others, Commencement wins hands down for me. It was also a longer episode (another plus), going past the usual hour, so more to enjoy. One of my all-time favorite SV eps. It also had one of my all-time favorite lines, when Jason (Jensen Ackles) said to the Kents with a gun pointed at them: "Oh, a mother always knows her son's deep dark secrets." Lol, classic.

My least favorite finale was Covenant -- too many boring/slow scenes involving the phony Kara girl's plotline. And I personally didn't really care for the Lionel "godfather/mobster" stuff, just didn't work for me.

Best to Worst

Season 3: Covenant - Great. Maybe not as Iconic as season 4, but iconography aside, as a story this one wins hands down.
Season 4: Commencement - Also Really good, for the first time it felt like Superman was finally coming.
Season 1: Tempest- It was a tough call between this and season 2 but this one was just damn good, and it was a sign of good things to come. This was the episode that got me really excited in the ship.
Season 2: Exodus - Good episode, good finale. Not as epic as some of the others but had a sense of forboding, and progression.
Season 5: Vessel - This was the last good finale, and this was at a time when Smallville was starting to lose its steam (although we wouldn't feel the first full blown effects of that until 'Sneeze') But this episode was still epic and had me excited for 'Zod'.

****THE DOWNFALL****

Season 6: Phantom - You know... everything was here in this episode... but I just couldn't be excited for it. I wanted to be, I was (foolishly) expecting this to be a good episode but it just did nothing for me. I knew that Lana had faked her death, I called it as soon as I saw it. I knew Lionel wouldn't die because Lex was the one who would Kill Lionel. I knew Lex was going to be saved somehow (didn't know at the time that it would be Kara but still), and I knew that Clark would beat Bizarro before the next premiere was up (although I was intrigued by Bizarro). The only thing I wasn't sure about was Chloe, and even still I didn't find myself really caring... and she's one of my favorite characters. On top of all this Martha Kent left the show and it wasn't even a big deal.
Season 7: Arctic - After a year and a three quarters of bad increasingly plothole filled stories Smallville had finally picked up some much needed steam for its seventh season. the last five episodes were better (if not perfect) and I was actually expecting something at least half decent. Arctic was terrible. It was rushed and the things that needed to be focussed on were almost an after thought. The only good thing about this episode was Chloe's 'defeat' over Brainiac, but (as many have stated) it ruined the fight between Clark and Brainiac later on. We all know Chloe will be out of Jail in an episode or two. Lana recovered, got admitted out of a hospital, made a 'dear John video letter', and left town in about five minutes (BAAAAAD writing). Clark should have just gone after Lex giving us more time with Rosenbaum and less time focussing on someone who's character will be able to wrap up next season (Lana is coming back for a few episodes after all). And the cliffhanger with Clark and Lex left me feeling incomplete.

The writers had several years of warning that Lex wasn't coming back, and he told them that for sure this year. Why couldn't they have wrapped up his character instead of wasting time? Overall Arctic was horrible.

Commencement is my favorite. It is my favorite episode of Smallville, actually. I give all of the season finales 10/10, with the exception of Vessel and Arctic. Every single finale has either put the world, the town or several characters in jeopardy, but in Arctic, it's only Clark, Kara, and maybe Lex that's in trouble. A lot less dramatic than the other finals, to be sure.

1) Commencement- though the finale to my least-favorite season, this episode just rocked. It was the first SV episode I had ever seen. The meteor shower was amazing. The crystal flying in the Arctic! Amazing.
2) Covenant- Cliffhangers were so good.
3) Phantom- Loved the Clark-Bizarro fight.
4) Exile- So emotinally powerful, with Clark trying to run from his destiny.
5) Tempest- Intriguing to see if Clark would have to fly to save Lana from the tornado.
6) Vessel- I thought Clark being trapped in the Phantom Zone was a little bit of the same thing from Covenant,when Jor-El trapped and rebirthed Clark in the PZ-like dimension.
7) Arctic- Loved Vandervoort's acting as Brainiac, and the moment where Lex discovers that Clark is his enemy is awesome. While really good, it just didn't seem to have the fire that most of the other season finales have had.

I totally agree. While season 5 may be the worst in the entire series of Smallville, I thought this was a GREAT cliffhanger. That's the question right? Best cliffhanger? Or is it "best finale"? There is a subtle difference. If you're talking about the entire final episode, then I'd probably vote for Commencement (loved the three stones of knowledge storyline finally coming together) but if you're JUST talking about how it ended and how it leaves you "wanting more", then I think it has to be Vessel. Clark ended up in the phantom zone for christ's sake! Talk about a "you're screwed" moment! The ONLY thing that could have made it better was having the real Zod come out of the phantom zone instead of just his spirit. I'm not crazy about the idea of a disembodied Zod. And I thought Lana was either incredibly fake or entirely shallow at the end of that episode. The city is literally ripping itself apart and all she can worry about is finding Lex so she can start a relationship with him? How selfish can one person be? "That's OK Lana! We're fine down here! The city's on fire. People are assaulting each other. Stores are being looted. Hospitals are overflowing. The infastructure has totally collapsed. But as long as you make it to Lex's side, all will be right with the world!" lol

My favorite season finale is season 6 "Phantom" . In my opinion this season finale left me wanting more and really excited for the new season. It had everything that makes a good season finale....Drama, action and of course cliffhangers!

It ended with Clark sent hurling in mid air with Bizarro right behind him with that weird face !!!! That sent chills down my spine!!!

I didn't know if Lana or Chloe were gonna be back next season I had no idea!

Season 6 season finale hands down was the best .

Tempest (S1) - The whole plot was pointless to the storyline IMO, No real thriller, just seemed like an everyday thing. 2/5

Exodus (S2) - Definitely had me wondering what was gonna happen next. 4/5

Covenant (S3) - I liked the Girl-from-krypton thing, Not totally, but it satisfied me. The ending was great though. 3.5/5

Commencement (S4) - The whole season came to a great ending. That's all i can think of. 4.5/5

Vessel (S5) - Probably my favourite, Again it came to a good ending, And the electronic virus idea was good. 5/5

Phantom (S6) - Not really all that good, Didn't like how all the main characters (Excluding Martha and Lana) ended up at a dam... 2/5

Arctic (S7) - What.The.Hell. The Lex/Clark confrontation came up WAAAY too late. 1/5

Overall I enjoyed Vessel the most.

My second pick would be Tempest. It was incredibly suspenseful, too. To me, the quality of the season finales steadily dropped after Season 4. Anyone feel the same way about that?
