Even though the Veritas plot has come out of nowhere in the latter half of this season, it has been one of the better-developed storylines on the show in a long time. The story of four families and their pact to find The Traveler has dealt with a good amount of the mythos that the show has created within the Superman universe and combined that with the larger picture of Clark and Lex's destiny. This week, Lex's quest to find the device that will control The Traveler (Clark) continues as he unravels the mysteries of the enigmatic clockwork device he retrieved a couple of weeks ago. At times, "Quest" almost feels like an episode of Alias with a mysterious Rambaldi style device and a globe-hopping adventure. Well, if you count Montreal as "globe-hopping."

While some may have enjoyed last week's alternate universe storyline, it's hard to deny that "Apocalypse" lacked focus. Thankfully, a bloated plot that tries to do too many things at once doesn't hamper "Quest." Instead we are treated to a much more focused story that features Lex trying to decipher the clues left by Veritas. It's a very refreshing attempt at trying to tell a larger storyline on a Smallville budget.

Michael Rosenbaum is in good form here and we have to give him credit for his consistency in playing Lex Luthor over the course of the series. Some actors grow noticeably tired of playing a part over the years but Rosenbaum has delivered quality performances every week. We just wish that he had been given better material to work with this season. "Quest" does allow him to shine though, especially in the final moments of the episode as he makes a key discovery.

"Quest" does have a few noticeable shortcomings. As usual of late, Clark is absolutely useless for the majority of the episode. Chloe puts the pieces of the puzzle together, sending Clark on a trip to Montreal where he is quickly captured by a kryptonite cane wielding Edward Teague (Robert Picardo). I'm starting to think you can buy kryptonite on every street corner in the Smallville universe as everyone seems to have some. I'll concede that Teague is definitely in a position to get his hands on kryptonite but it would be far less of a crutch for the writers if these green pieces of rock were much harder to come by.

Also, Chloe's miraculous appearance in St. Christopher's cathedral to save Clark, yet again, was a bit too convenient. Lex's jet was in the air before Chloe left and yet she managed to arrive in Montreal not too long after him. Are we to assume that Ollie's jet is twice as fast? It would have been nice to see Clark work his way out of this situation on his own, instead of relying on Chloe to save the day.

The character of Edward Teague was horribly underdeveloped. He's been hinted at over the course of the last few episodes and while it was an interesting twist to see that he really wasn't dead, his surprise appearance wasn't all that exciting. Robert Picardo is a great actor who has given a lot to sci-fi, but even he couldn't make me interested in this character. Someone who could have been a fascinating new addition to the Smallville> universe comes off as nothing more than a clichéd religious zealot.

Once again, Lana's absence is noticeable but is she really missed? Besides being the damsel-in-distress, there really is nothing else left for Lana to contribute to this storyline. The show is already juggling so many characters that it doesn't know what to do with (Kara, Jimmy and Lois) that Lana has fallen by the wayside. "Quest" benefits from cutting most of these characters out of the story and only focusing on four regulars from the cast.

Having the final piece of the Veritas puzzle be Luthor mansion was a nice touch and a good way of bringing the story home. The map appeared to show the arctic as Lex's next destination so we'll assume that is where we are headed. Also, calling the next episode "Arctic" helps. Don't forget, Lana, Kara and Brainiac's stories have all yet to be resolved so it should make for quite a jam-packed conclusion to this season.

final score : 7.7 out of 10

i agree. this was a decent episode but Veritas is making the story convoluted.

I agree with most of this review.....however.....I feel that if Kristin was available, that the Chloe role would of been hers and it should have been. Since everyone is using the ISIS equipment it would of been the logical part in the story. However, with Lana's present state, there is not much the writers can do... now is it??

That particular point has been my main problem with Smallville for over 2 seasons now. How come the show doesn't know what to do with its lead character?

Pish posh mish mash hodge podge of a missed mass (;-P) of half witted hits... [Must Stop Reading Comics!]

Seriously, Teague is a great character. If you dump on a character who has less than 10 minutes of screen time (9 minutes, 26 seconds to be apprx. precise...), that seems a little unreasonable and says more about blotted expectations than what's actually being presented. In those barely 10 minutes, he manages to rather successfully put Veritas The Group and its apparently centuries-old history into perspective. No.Small.Feat. And lays out the breadth and depth not only of his own life but his family's as well. I like that. It had depth, breadth and a cool cane.

Lots of ppl are freaked about the intensity- let's put it that way- of Quest's graphic nature. In Canada there were viewer warnings after every commercial break. I thought it served the story very well (not the warning, the graphic stuff). But I'm not squeamish and others are so I respect this. But as pure story device and texture, it fit very well into where the story is heading: seriouser, curiouser & dangerouser (in my AU, yes, ALL those words exist in our dictionary which is called Anything Goes that has Letters & Sounds Kool. Kids love it; parents burn it!).

The look on Teague's face when he spies Clark after he saved Lex from him is priceless. Woo-hoo! "So the Traveler is not so lame after all!", Teague thinks to himself, "Perhaps I can now use my cane to contact Senator Kent & give her the honorary Veritas Code which will trigger an hypnotic green glowing force field that freezes time and gives her the materials and work station where she can make Clark's super suit...!" -

...with the red hot booties. Anything but green, naturally! She (Annette O'Toole AKA Martha Kent (YAY!!!)) will then appear at the very last minute in the FOS in the 42nd minute of "Arctic", give him his super suit with the red hot booties so he can fly out of the FOS through that off-rectangular opening that we all saw at the end of Season 5 Premiere "Arrival" -which was a reference and Homage to Superman The Movie when The Man of Steel, upon completion of his training, flies out of the FOS in the wake of the rectangular shape expanded out of the right eye of the crystal mask of Jor-El's face that appears following the graphic representation of Clark's training that is all shown in space with Marlon Brando's voice.

Woo-Hoo! Say it's true!

Anyway, just my take on Teague; he's a compelling character and the introduction of the religious element, however creepy in it whole ritual sacrifice (the actual sacrifice never begin too clear), is IMHO, a very clever take on the religious elements of Superman The Movie (which Donner et all have spoken about at length so it's certainly nothing new and should not be surprising to anyone that this whole Superman as god, savior, christ...etc comes up in Smallville. Bryan Singer was explicit in his use of the Messianic theme for Superman Returns and anyone looking for proof need only have a look at two of the final scenes of SR; when Superman rises beyond the clouds to meet the Sun to his Apollonian godhead, and when he passes out on the edge of the Earth after throwing the big kryptonite island into space, he falls backwards arms stretched out Christ-like on the cross, head slightly tilted. Plus his dialogue with Lois about the world needing a savior..."I hear people calling for one all the time...".

About Chloe appearing to help Clark, I saw no big problem with it. She's a sidekick and that's what a sidekick does. SO there. And as she said a few episodes ago, "Time to up my game...!" Fine, so she meant hacking but she's broadening the theme with big iron crosses. Works for me.

WHat doesn't is MR leaving the show. I'm off to cry. BUt then again maybe more James Marsters!!! Now there's a tradeoff that might actually be copasetic, if not actually worth it.

I for one am glad that Chloe won't be around each week to help Clark save the day (or saving it in spite of Clark). This will force Clark to take problems head on and solve them himself.

I did not like the religious zealot idea. It just seemed way over the top and cartoonish compared to rest of the Veritas members story. A secret ritual to kill the Traveler? All you need is Kryptonite, it's not that hard. And even with all the Kryptonite just lying around, Edward Teague still failed. That's the problem with Smallville, they have to make the villians so INCOMPETENT at times.

I agree with everything IGN stated. Hopefully now that god willing Allison may not come back, Clark may actually talk and think at the same time.

And, IMO, it should have been Kara who swooped into Montreal and saved Clark, not Chloe./

But as we know, Kara was not available.

The plot hole is that, even though we know the spoilers, Clark does not. She must have cleaned up the milk and talked to Clark on "Offscreenville".

One quick note: I thought Veritas was centuries old too! But it was founded by the four families (Teagues, Luthors, Swann, and the Queens) around 1987, I believe.

I three am glad that Chloe will leave the show. She's done her purpose and now Clark has to work on his own and develop investigative skills and other things Chloe did for him. His new help should be Lois of course!

Robert Picardo is a great actor who has given a lot to sci-fi, but even he couldn't make me interested in this character.

I agree, I love the Doctor, but his character was not fleshed out at all, and he came off kind of nuts. They should have made him as smart, methodical, and there should have been a star trek reference for god's sake!
