View Full Version : Please cut the Veritas storyline some slack!

I don't think the Veritas storyline has been airtight... but come one, please cut the writer's some slack!
They first started the storyline in Season 2 back when the secret society was gonna be called the "Seers"... then Christopher Reeves/Virgil Swann died and Jason Teague/Jensen Ackles left after only one season (into a planned two seasons)... so they had to abandon that storyline (turning Jason Teague evil a season ahead of schedule, so that it felt ridiculously rushed).
Then just when they got the Veritas storyline re-started (in "Veritas"), the writer's strike hit. Among other changes they had to make, the writers had to move Lionel's death scene into the opening of the next episode (Descent), rather than at the end of the episode where it would've been much more powerful (but where it wouldn't have worked as a potential season cliffhanger).
And by the time the strike was over, Kristen Kreuk had started filming Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li... so her character was written out through some sort of Kryptonian catatonia. Which wasn't that bad for the Veritas storyline, but caused Clark to start moping around rather than fight Lex - causing a chorus of "BDA" comments.
I realize that the writers haven't nailed everything, but I think they've done a pretty solid job. Check out TV.com's ratings of the top Smallville episodes ever:
* http://www.tv.com/smallville/show/1718/top.html?tag=subtabs;top
There were four main episodes in the Veritas arc: Traveler, Veritas, Descent, and Quest. Three of them are in the top 15 rated episodes of all time: Quest (#3), Descent (#4), and Traveler (#13).
I think the Veritas storyline has been pretty popular overall. I do have my own issues with it... but come one, let's cut the writers some slack! They've been forced to write around some pretty difficult obstacles, no?

Hey I never said anything bad about it. I actually think its the best thing they have done all season. Giving Clark some hero scenes, which he hasn't been able to do in a long time.

it's a good story line, but the episode 'Veritas' itself wasn't the best.

I do think that Veritas story is great but not well implement, they are "forcing" the pieces of the puzzle to fit with the past and the current ones.

The whole Veritas story would of been great if they had spread it out more but with the death of CR, Marrgot Kidder's dislike of how they wanted season 4 to go so they changed it, plus alot of unessisary distractions like all of season 6 it got a huge slap in the face. My point is the writers wasted time and now they're trying to put it all together and it's causing a whole mess of problems.

I think veritas is a great idea even though some parts they can't link up, I think they tried their best and it annoys me people always posting here saying how they're ruining smallville and all the plot holes and so on. but it's all good :) lol

Yes..it is not well implemented.
I agree though season 7 is not my favorite I like the Veritas storyline...yeah it has it's potholes and inconsistencies but it's the solid ground of this season. Maybe I'll cut the writers some slack with the writers strike, but I still think they could have made things a lot better this season especially with Descent. It was a good episode but I think Glover deserved a better send off.

I thought the writers did an excellent job finally connecting everything from the past together. It makes the series so much more of a whole.

I like season 7...What I have to say to those who have negative ideas about the Smallville writers is:...There are many armchair critics that couldn't put a good paragraph together much less an episode. This reminds me of sports where would be players sit in their living-rooms criticizing everything but have never played or coached a college or pro game...Sorry if I stepped on some toes but I just get tired of reading negative posts. Thanks to those who have good things to say about Smallville.

No you haven't stepped on any toes...lol  I love Smallville and I think the writing is great but I think it was far better in the earlier seasons. It's just my opinion that the writers could of kicked it up a notch this is the 7th season! and I'm not bashing the Veritas storyline either...It's just my opinion that this season hasn't been the best for me and I think I'm entitled to my opinion.

Any writer worth his salt can use constructive criticism to turn his next work into something better than it might have been otherwise. But I agree that taking potshots doesn't help anyone or the show improve.
I haven't been a fan of the "Veritas" arc, because it came out of nowhere and feels unnatural and rushed. I am willing to cut the writers a little slack because of the strike but, hey, their union was the one striking.
All that said, the writers are not producing dog meat: They're finally growing Clark up.

for a lot of people, Veritas has been good and others it has been bad. I like it, but i do think they are trying too hard to wrap things up for MR seeing as his last episode is this week so they arent considering everything in the long run and there are plenty of plot holes in there.

I thought I was in the minority, thoroughly enjoying most of season 7. I feel like the Veritas storyline has brought a lot of great moments and has helped in darkening the show up a bit, as it were. Yes, there are plotholes. Things that don't make sense and don't really tie together. I just prefer to watch and enjoy rather than going back and giving myself a brain melt trying to figure out how it can possibly tie in to things. No offense to those who do, lol.
Could it have been handled better? Sure. Most things in life can be in hindsight. Considering they have 7 seasons worth of storylines that they have to eventually tie into the generally known Superman mythos, I think they're doing a pretty good job. As it comes to an end, I'm sure they're somewhat kicking themselves over some earlier choices that just make no sense. They have to try and get those stories to fit in overall, without using 45 minutes of monologue to spell it out for us.
I think that while there are things that we all ***** about and stories that make you stare at the screen thinking "WTF??", they've done a good job of working as a story on their own as well as a story that's connected to many others. Not easy to do, imo.

My husband keeps wondering how many more sharks SV can jump before I stop watching. I guess I'm too much of a Superman fan :rotfl:

I like Veritas story very much too but,it's just their timming that sucks. They should have started this interesting storyline in the beginning of the season instead of the stupid Lana's revange that made no sense whatsover.Really, too bad because there would have been more time to devellope it,added details and Lionel would still be there to provide further explanations for Clark.I agree that the strike didn't help though.
