The Fortress was made from the Crystal of Knowledge, which was made by Jor-El on Krypton (based on the diaries of Genevieve Teague which were given out as prizes during the Justice and Doom contest - http://osck.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/diaries-p01.jpg <-- just change that number from 1 to 9 to read the whole thing).

When Clark combined the Stones of Power into the Crystal of Knowledge, the Crystal then transported him to the Arctic. Then Clark helped it transform into the Fortress of Solitude.

So it seems like Jor-El had already picked a home for Clark's Fortress of Solitude... so if he made the Globe too, I could see it knowing where the Fortress was?

What I can't figure out though, is that I thought the Stones of Power were hidden on Earth years ago. According to that diary above, two of General Zod's soldiers hid the stones on Earth. Did they use time portals to hide them in the past? Cuz otherwise, it kinda makes no sense...

They probably did travel back in time ...if the Fortress can time travel then I don't see they couldn't.

It kind of seems to me that the Arctic is the most logical place for the Fortress of Solitude anyhow. It's the one place on earth that most closely resembles Smallville's Krypton. I think I remember someone calling it a big ball of ice in season 6 or something.

I'm still trying to understand the purpose of the globe. That Justice & Doom thing really sounds crappy. I doubt Jor-El would have let the stones fall into the hands of Zod or his soldiers. Why would they make a globe to something that did not exist? I was hoping that the globe would track not the FOS but the Eradicator which they could have explained to be buried underneath the FOS. That would have made sense. That way, the Eradicator would have been what guided the "crystal of knowledge" to land where it did to create the FOS.
