I dunno if I like smallvilles implications. There were some definite anti catholic undertones in it.

How is that anti catholic? Superman is basically a savior to the people. That's what they call him lol

I don't see any anti-catholic undertones, but there were alot of illusions to god and the bible and jesus in this episode. then again they do that in the comics and the movies, so no biggie for me.

I agree. They've done that numerous times over the years. In "Wrath", they brought up Paul being struck by lightning before he sought his higher calling from God and Delilah's betrayal towards Samson.
It depends if you're actually going to take what the show is saying personally and use that to affect your spiritual beliefs. I for one won't let the show do that. :o

Why just anti-catholic? That's fine if you feel that way. I just wondered why you made it one specific denomination. Why not anti-Lutheran, or anti-Methodist, maybe anti-Presbyterian? Just wondering. I know this episode took place in a catholic church, but surely they don't have total claim on "savior".

So Jesus was an alien?
You're taking it too seriously in my opinion. :o It's kind of like you're letting the show and what they've said change your perception about your beliefs.

Superman has always been looked to as a Christ reference. See Superman Returns.
It's a logically jump that's made many times in comics and other mediums. So it made perfect sense in the context used in this episode.

Think about it: Jor-el an imensly powerful being from beyond the stars, sends his only begotten son to earth, and he's constantly saving humanity from the brink of disatour.

I didn't see any anti-catholic undertones, these kind of story lines do have biblical references but nothing seemed negative. The cathedral scene was quite beautiful. Don't take it to seriously.

yeah, it wasn't anti-Catholic.
The point was the opposite: to show that it's not peoples' beliefs that make them "dangerous" but how they go about it. This guy worshiped Clark, but was willing to kill in his name. Clark didn't want that. I think they were making more of a statement about how people kill in Jesus Christ's name, and that is defeating the whole point of Christ, which is love.

How was it ant- catholic? I didn't see them diss the catholic's redeemer (mary). Besides, they were talking about clark as a 'god'. This is science fiction not science fact .

I agree with you mozart requiem. The best evidence is Chloe's line about how god felt about the crusades. If this episode was anti-anything, it was anti religious fanaticism.

Thanks, scifigirl! :) Yeah, that quote truly represents that, and I'm really glad they included this theme.
It's ironic: today at my school, some religious guy was waving a sign around that listed groups of people he thought were going to hell. I, being a devout Christian, but NOT believing it's right to judge people, asked him, "where in the Bible does it say that? And do you think maybe your approach could be handled differently? Perhaps teaching people about Jesus's love instead...?" But the guy wouldn't listen to me. And it makes me mad, because so many people see THIS type of behavior and assume that it is the Christian way, when in fact, it is the opposite.

Has anybody else noticed in the trailers at the end when they go back to the Smallville logo, you see a cross in the background? I've only seen it in the last four or five episode trailers. :\

MozartRequiem, just a little curious, what did he have on his sign? This may be a little off topic so send me a message or something.

I didn't sense any religious overtones either. They used a church setting but just because of the plot.

i don't think superman has ever had catholic overtones, the episode was inside a church, with kryptonian symbols, not many churches have those symbols, so I am sure Mr.Teague, made his own variations on the water.

I dunno if I like smallvilles implications. There were some definite anti catholic undertones in it.I TOTALLY AGREE with you. You are 100% CORRECT. It went against what the bible says about worshiping and it spit in the face of everyone by having that satanic crap inside of the church. It was complete and utter bull crap.
The show should BE FORCED TO END because of the crap it portrayed and the manner in which it portrayed it without parental warning for satanic overtone.
I think it was STUPID STUPID STUPID.

It was more adressed to religious fanatics in general who sometimes are going too far with their beleives.

it didn't seem anti-catholic 2 me. in fact, it had nothing to do with any specific religion in general.

There has always been religious symbolism in Superman, and Smallville is not exception. Remember the famous picture from the Pilot, with Clark crucified in the feild of corn?
However, I've been finding the religious iconography a little heavy-handed lately, especially in "Quest". I also find Chloe's comments comparing Clark to Christ a little creepy, in the last three episodes. She is no longer his friend, she's his acolyte. It's not a healthy relationship. By contrast, Lois is now the one who still treats Clark as a friend.

I totally agree! chloe is way out line!
I was very offended by what this eppy brought, it was awesome don't get me wrong but all those comparisons to Christ is just WAY OUT LINE, too many comparisons not just one here or there but all over the eppy!!!
I found it very offensive and I'm baptist, so not only catholics got offended...

It is very 'in' for Hollywood writers to bash or demean Christianity and even as a fan of Superman, I find this repeated 'saviour' bit insulting. The episode itself drew on St. Christopher (a former saint in the Catholic church), it had Teague in a monk's habit and holy water and a church with a set up for basically torture in a dungeon like atmosphere. The writers knew fully well what they were doing and realized that in their peer group, this kind of demeaning association would be fully accepted.

I agree SteveS. I guarantee the number of viewers will drop DRASTICALLY for tonights episode. They always seem to stick some BULL CRAP in shows at the end. They just have to try and F*CK SH*T up. Always.
