I thought Krypton exploded first, but this episode showed the sun exploding first. Who knows which way it was suppose to be. It does make sense that if one exploded it would affect the other, but how was it in the comics or other media.

They took this almost directly from the Superman movie, where it was the sun that exploded and took Krypton with it. In most other media though, the planet exploded on it's own. I've always wondered though, if it was the sun that destroyed Krypton, why was the planet having earthquakes and falling apart before it exploded?

This is another plothole. Kara said that Zod activated a doomsday mechanism. Such a device would destroy Krypton. There's no way Zod had the power to destroy the sun.
In Lara we saw Krypton rumbling as if there were quakes happening from within the planet. I would guess that those were a bunch of explosions within the planet that went off in a chain reaction until the planet was just totally ripped apart & destroyed.

In a really cool book I read "The Last Days of Krypton"
If you want to read a SUPER INTERESTING BOOK then DON'T READ THIS:
****BOOK SPOILER*****
the end was the Planet blowing up due to the Counsil throwing Jor-El's Phantom zone into a Volcanic crater, and it sucked all the energy from Krytons core.
Really really REALLY cool book gotta read it.

I don't remember when Kara said this, please refresh my memory.

Well if you have a big unstable object in your solar system chances are the forces of gravity will cause other smaller objects in that solar system to become unstable as well

I don't think it would cause quakes. It may cause the planet to shift its orbit, but probably not quakes. Quakes are caused within a planet due to plate shifts and pressure building up from beneath the surface.
Plus, Kara (in Kara) assumed that Zod activated a doomsday scenario that her father told her of (much like Gabriel Duncan did with the nuke in Hidden). The explanation was that war caused the destruction of Krypton, not a natural disaster.

In an animated Superman movie I saw (believe it was the last son of Krypton or something), Jor-El was trying to convince the counsel Krypton would self-destruct because of their sun. who knows, it may be changed a lot.

I thought it had something to do with the case of 'green death' that went throughout Krypton, which was resulting in the deaths of the fellow Kryptonians. Also something about Jor-El discussing what has happened to the planet and how it needed to be destroyed.
Well there's many stories, so it's hard to follow just one cause.

in the comics i read krypton was destroyed from an explosion from within. i hate the fact that in the movies and smallville was destroyed by Rao, the red sun. If a sun destroyed the planet, there wouldnt be a such thing as kryptonite. why? because there wouldnt be any, the power of the explosion would eviscerate everything!

Yep, you jarred my memory more. In the last son of Krypton film, it was because of the sun that the planet was destroyed. I don't like when they go that angle either really, I prefer more in the lines of something inside the planet.

yeah because then you have to deal with the explanation as to why the kryptonite is poisonous. they never give an explanation as to why with that approach. they cant say that it has red star radiation in it because then it would be like "well why does it kill him instead of take his powers away?"
its seriously a cop out for a deep explanation that would be appreciated by the fans if tptb cared.

The different ways in which Krypton has been shown to blow up are as follows...
1. The original way - An unexplained chain reaction in the planets core blows Krypton up
2. The Movie way - The Red sun which Krypton orbits blows up taking the planet with it.
3. The Byrne way - A chain reaction that starts a 'green death' begins that starts to poison the inhabitants. Eventually the chain reaction leads to Kryptons demise in the form of an explosion.
4. The Animated way - Same as the original. Brainiac could have saved everyone but lied instead and saved his own life.
5. the Smallville way - Same as the movie (it would seem), except that we know that a devastating civil war involving Jor-El, Zor-El, Zod, Brainiac, and some kind of 'Doomsday weapon' were all involved in triggering Kryptons destruction, and the star it orbits.
This is another plothole. Kara said that Zod activated a doomsday mechanism. Such a device would destroy Krypton. There's no way Zod had the power to destroy the sun.
Really? I wouldn't assume to know exactly how Zod went about his plan, but how do you know that he didn't have the capabilities to blow up a star? The Kryptonians were far more advanced than us, and as soon as you give me a story where someone is capable of blowing up a planet I can also accept that they (Zod) might be able to also blow up a star. Besides, traditionally stars are known for blowing up. Planets are not.

It seems the Smallville way is a mixture of both the movies and the animated way with the addition of a civil war caused by Zod.
In "Lara" Lara said:
"Krypton may never see the end of this war. Jor-el's BrainInterActive Construct may very well save us but I wont' risk my son's life on that chance.[...] I can't let the destiny of my child be dictated by the fate of our planet "

In Superman Returns, Krypton ate the sun, then exploded.

In that book about the physics of superheros, it's postulated that Krypton is a unique kind of planet that is a crust over a neutron star. I suspect it's a shellworld grown with Krypton-tech, judging by the look from the movie.
So, imagine a bad interaction between the neutron star and the red sun it orbits. That could certainly cause bad gravity waves, and they would be concentrated on the red-sun side of the planet, causing uneven tectonic forces, hence earthquakes.
yeah because then you have to deal with the explanation as to why the kryptonite is poisonous.
What if Kryptonite powers are activated by the yellow sun, the same as the Kryptonian's powers?

In the Superman movies the sun blew up as (I guess it was a dying star). In the comics the red sun still exists and the planet was destroyed. The reason the planet was destroyed depends on the current continuity DC has. Before Infinite Crisis, Krypton was destroyed because 200,000 years prior to it's destruction a cult detonated a nuke in Kryptons core. That started the chain reaction that eventually destroyed the planet.
