I'm confused about that. I thought it was the government, but was it Lex? At first I thought that the government was catching on to all of her hacking and snooping, but then I thought that maybe Lex was trying to put an end to it all.

Clarifications, please? Thank you!

I think it was the government that hired her. If Lex hired her, then Lex would want all of the information that Chloe received without just shutting the operation down or whatever by telling Vanessa to stop pursuing Chloe.

That's what I think at least...

I was a bit intrigued, too. Because when Vanessa says your secret or your life, I thought immediately of Lex who's always wanted to know Clark's secrets. And it was just too easy to call off the dogs of government for Lex, which means he may have had the connections to put those government dogs onto Chimmy in the first place. Maybe it was a set-up so Jimmy would fall into his hands like a ripe plumb. I'd like to know who approached whom first with the idea of saving Chloe.

But I tend to think of it as being a legit government operation because Vanessa referenced StarHawk project which was a project run by Flintlock that Kara and Jimmy broke into in Cure. That's right! The government was watching Jimmy because of Karimy computer hacking and I think that's how they caught onto Chloe so fast. So if she hadn't gotten back together with Jimmy, she might have gone undetected for at least a while. Getting back together with Jimmy hasn't done her many favors so far.

I think that the whole government aspect of this episode was poorly done, it was like they suddenly decided to pump up the comic book flare for this episode, the super secret spy kit? the sequin dressed agent? the torture? This had to be re-edited from an episode originally intended to be like Noir.

OK thanks I thought it was a government agent, but a post on another thread threw me off.

For me the real question is; why would Lex pull strings to get Chloe off the hook and NOT demand to know what she was up to? Since when did Lex become benevolent and accommodating??

For crying out loud rewatch the episode she was a government agent thus working for the Government although she did overextend her authority quite a bit, she was just a Government agent though a pretty overzealous one...

She probably worked for Black ops or something. The she beat Chloe makes me think that.

That's quite a probability. She said she was some sort of homeland security officer but she might be a Badass CADMUS agent after all!

Lex know has Jimmy in his pocket. I hardly see that as benevolent and accommodating. Lex probably has all of the information obtained from this operation and now can use Jimmy in the future to uncover anything more that he needs. I could be reading to much into this, however.

I don't think you are reading too much into it. Lex definitely had a Godfather moment there with Jimmy - I like to think of us as family - and families help each other - so I can call on you in the future --- strings attached, no question.

And it would be like Lex to set up the trap to get Chloe in trouble so he can rescue her and have favors owed later. Any info he got on Clark/Chloe's secrets would make it worth his while. Maybe he sees Jimmy as the weak link in the people close to Clark group?

Very astute observations. I agree wholeheartedly.
