View Full Version : The Box/ Veritas Compass discussion
Superman of Krypton

It's very obvious..yes I know
But I thought I'd make a thread to discuss it anyway.
I thought this was the best scene of the episode.
So Lex will be able to use the Fortress to control Clark? How did Veritas know about the FoS?
It could have something to do with the Teagues and the element stones.

This was a good scene even though it felt kind of rushed. Did you happen to notice if the guy who handed him the box was the same guy who tried to strangle him? I can't remember.
Superman of Krypton
04-23-2008, 08:30 PM
Yeah. The guy who I thought was Edward Teague.
I guess we'll find out in the upcoming episodes. Lex finds a new ally in the upcoming eps; the identity of that person is in the Ksite spoilers.

So Lex opens the box in Zurich to find what appears to be coordinates to the Fortress of Solitude. Lionel has said that if he opens the box, that it would "destroy him, no redemption..." Does he mean in the sense of his heart and soul, or literally, as if Jor-El will do something to him, for Lionel knew where the box would lead him?

Lionel meant the lure of the dark power would destroy Lex. There would be no going back once the box was opened, and he would continuously seek out more, more, and more, eventually destroying everything by his ambitious greed.

Thats what I thought ;) But you always got to fear the impending mind-wipe...? Possibly...?

Oh my God Nooooo. I can't take anymore tonight after this episode, I'm blocking my mind to the mindswipe thing.

this is a huge plot hole to be honest. how is it they knew about the fortress when the crystals were never collected to construct it before? they didnt know about what the crystals would do therefore they didnt know how to build a compass to track where the fortress was going to be. i just dont like the idea of this storyline when it comes down to the essential storytelling.

ok so lex opens the box.. which was hilarious when it was empty and he almost had a tantrum but anyway... he gets a compass to the fortress... so what if someone opened this box 4 years earlier.. the coordinates would have led to nothing.. idk this veritas thing is cool if we didn't consider that it contradicts like everything in the first 5 seasons...idk thoughts?

i do think the veritas story is interesting and when he opened that box i was definitley laughing. Who though would have opened that box 4 years earlier w/o possesion of the two keys. Patricia Swann and lionel had the two keys and i dont think the two took a sneek together.

Isn't that from Willie Wonka or something, the golden wrappers, or is there an actual golden compass in another movie I don't know about?
In Lex's defense, it didn't really look gold.

Yes, there is a movie called the Golden Compass that stars Nicole Kidman :)

The Envelope = the secret to controlling "the traveler"
and
The Envelope = the way to the Fortress
so Obviously
the way to the Fortress = the secret to controlling "The Traveller"
since it's the magical plot device that blotts out the sun and controls time and is pretty much a giant philosopher's stone allowing the owner to do any goddamn thing he wants ever!
In its defense, it should only BE so lucky. 1 armored magic polar bear would be 10x the better hero than 1 Clark Kent 85 out of 100 times

Perhaps that it was not really important for that scene I don't know but I have the impression that this episode was kinda rushed....:)

Simple - the compass leads the way, once he gets there he will find the machine of life that controls everything, full of knobs and levers :)

You know what would be funny is if Lex actually hits the wrong button and reverses time and goes back before he did what he did in Descent :)

and now that I think of it, how did Virgil/Veritas know where the Fortress was going to be built? wouldn't that have required knowledge of what would happen when the stones were assembled?
Kevin24
04-25-2008, 11:06 AM
Yeah they have foresight. Somehow they knew it was going to be built and exactly where it was going to be built. I like the Vertias story but it just doesn't make sense with the rest of the seasons.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS
=====================
Though there was no reference in or aluded to it whatsoever in RELIC/1969. But what if Traveler also refers to Jor-El from his time on Earth during the RELIC story line? It would explain how the Veritas organization knew about the FoS, and Where it would be built...
Drakaun
04-25-2008, 12:00 PM
I don't get the reference, I do not think the thing in the box looks anything like the Golden Compass, not in the least, and besides, it isn't a Golden Compass, it is an Aletheometer. Getting back on topic when he was going to open the box I was thinking to myself, wouldn't it be funny if when he opens the box he finds a Pezz despenser, well needless to say the box was empty for two seconds, but it was still a laughing reaction from me. I try not to speculate too much, but I enjoyed this episode and am really looking forward to net week's episode, I have a feeling it will be a strong end of season, hopefully leading into a really strong Last season. Here's to hoping.

So now Lex has the thing to grant him 'ultimate power'. I have to say it was a bit of an anticlimax when he finally opened the envelope - it looked like something that wouldn't look out of place in a maths lesson
I did wonder if it really would be such a bad thing if Lex found it as would it necessarily tell him who the traveller was?
In terms of the storyline I think Lex was meant to uncover the device. Although what he does with it now I don't know

I'm surmising that it leads him to the location of the Fortress. It's kind of a Kryptonian GPSr.

[QUOTE=Billy Jor-El;3753101]I'm surmising that it leads him to the location of the Fortress. It's kind of a Kryptonian GPSr.[/QUOTE
I kind of agree, it looked like a clockwork machine from a few centuries ago (possibly the time Kryptonians started visiting Earth) and the dials in the right combination show a list of numbers that could be similar to a latitude and longtitude grid reference. I was expecting it to be a map but this could be the same result. Point is that it will lead Lex to a specific location where he will find this whatever it is.
My personal belief is that it will lead him to the mountain where Doomsday is buried.
Harrison_Bergeron
04-27-2008, 01:52 PM
How would Doomsday be beneficial? Veritas was supposed to have a way of controlling the traveler, not killing him and being stuck with a bigger problem.
According to the spoilers the thing in Zürich is not how Lex finds the Fortress, so that makes its purpose even more intriguing.

this is a huge plot hole to be honest. how is it they knew about the fortress when the crystals were never collected to construct it before? they didnt know about what the crystals would do therefore they didnt know how to build a compass to track where the fortress was going to be. You are assuming the compass gave the coordinates to the Fortress. We don't know that for sure, do we? It may have been a star map compass, giving astral coordinates.
TigerLily83
04-28-2008, 04:19 AM
Astral coordinates to what? The only thing that would make the Veritas envelope's contents so bloody dangerous is if it led Lex straight to the fortress; because if Lex finds the fortress then he also discover's why it's there, and who it's for.
What I am wondering is where Jor-El's AI has gone to because it didn't answer Clark when he was there in Sleeper and heard Kara's message about being on Krypton and if it's somehow unavailable then that would give Lex a chance to do whatever it is he wants or feels he needs to do to it.

oops, i missed the end of one of the sentences...kinda a key detail to miss, but i get ya now!

well presumably it leads to where something is hidden that can actually control clark...solves the issue of how lex would use the fortress to control clark, he doesnt! now just to work out what it is....if its a lump of the green stuff, ill be pissed

You're absolutely right it is a dumb move. Unfortunately as I recall from the original Death of Superman series that is pretty much exactly what Lex was trying to achieve - the Death or at least neutralisation of Superman, and ended up with something that only Superman could defeat before it destroyed the world a piece at a time. Such is the way of nemesisses. eess.

It has to be more than a device that locates the fortress or anything like that. Cause even if Lex gets to the fortress he won't be able to control clark.

umm, we definetly dont know what it does yet.
of course it turning and clicking isnt the only thing it does. of course it does something else, remember its supposed to control clark.
and just for the record, when the circles clicked into places, there were shadows on the individual circles and if you watch it again you'll see that its actually the "V", for veritas, in the weird shape with the jagged edges.
it looks like the v, the same one on the wax seal. at first I really didnt notice that.
TigerLily83
04-29-2008, 10:28 PM
I saw that too ThrillSeeker - though I'm not sure why it needs to be there.. symbolic I suppose. It just confirms to Lex that the compass is what the Veritas clan were safekeeping and we all already knew that.
*Waits patiently, and slightly longer than the rest of you, for the next episode to arrive*
