Anyone remember that quote from Lex from way back? I think it was around season 1 sometime, but Lex was comparing his father's funeral to Clark's father. It's kinda interesting to see that we actually did get to see both of their dads die in the series.
"When my father dies, kings will come to his funeral but when yours does, his friends will come.".

Not only any king went to the funeral, but he was buried in an ordinary cementery...awful and sad.

Lex basically buried him in a cardboard box in the ground. Lionel hasnt been an angel by any means...but he deserved better then that. I half expected Martha to make an appearance...but nothing.

At least Clark was there to honor his memory.

wow! it's impressive that you would remember that
Oh, I remember that quote - great reference! It seems in the end only Clark was his friend - Jonathan would have loved that. I really liked how in Lionel's message to Clark he said he felt he was greater than all of the kings etc he met in his life. Awesome ego on him! But I can't say Lionel deserved a great funeral - he got his comeuppance after all. This is the same Lionel who killed his own parents, killed the Veritas members, and tried to kill Lex, Chloe, her father and who knows how many others because he thought what he wanted (power, control, money etc) mattered so much he had the right. Which is what he taught Lex.

yeah i remember this, well too bad for Lionel, Lex is a jerk and left him no memory he deserved. and Lionel has changed, he was an evil mofo in the first 3 seasons but in season 4 he genuinly was for good

I know what you mean. :( Hopefully they all go individually to pay their respects to him. I know that he's done wrong to them, but Chloe and others should at least go and pay their final respects IMO.

It truly dissappointed me that it was only Lex vs Clark at the funeral.. I mean maybe a moment or something like that.. but no martha, Chloe, even Jimmy and Lois (to show that they will try and avenge his death bc in a way they 'witnessed' his murder).. I'm ok with the show and the death were about the descent of Lex but the Funeral itself should have been about Lionel. For any number (other then just clark) to show up and defy Lex's disrespect of his father would have been at least a little more profound then clark and Lex making it all about them..

You're all forgetting what Chloe said about how Lex restricted anybody from coming to Lionel's funeral. Clark just ignored the restriction and came, and Lex smiled it off.

if lionel was an internationally known personality, i don't think lex could have prevented the press and onlookers, i mean lionel luthor could have been as famous a trump kind of personality. plus with all the press of "jumping" out of his own building.....

Yeah I'm not forgetting.. I'm just ashamed that people that should have made a diffence didn't care enough to make it happen..

I think that towards the end of his life Lionel did try and redeam himself though.
Hey, I know that forcing Lana to marrying Lex and placing Clark in a Kryptonite cage isn't exacting what most people would consider helping out Clark...but it is Lionel we are talking about.
I think the writers protrayed Lionel's intentions towards the end of his life were good, he just made some poor choices when it came to the end justifing the means.
It was more important who came to the funeral as oppossed to how many people. Clark showing up at the funeral made more of an impression on Lex than thousands showing up to be counted among the who's who. Having one person who truely cared about Lionel dying was more significant than all the Kings and other "important people" showing up. Lex knew this and it served to rub salt in the wound. He was wrong about what his father's funeral would turn out to be.
I couldn't agree more about losing the MB, but it was necessary to further the story of Lex and Clark, which is what I have always hoped the focus of SV would be. Thanks to JG for a great run on the show!

Lex didn't invite anyone to the funeral. I like that Clark sneaked in anyway. I bet Lex wasn't surprised that somehow Clark got in without any trouble. :D You could tell by the look on his face that he wasn't surprised to see Clark.

If you look at that phrase metaphorically, it rings very true. Kal-El is a God. Lex is a powerful Tyrant who will become President. Kings DID come to Lionel's funeral, and Jonathan's friends DID go to his. Its very poetic in a way.
And Lionel died a very changed man. His methods may have been cruel at times, but he was always on Clark's side. He spent the end of his life trying to atone for his past sins, and I really feel he did that. He had a very Batmanesque approach to helping Clark, he was still a cool cat with MB traits, he still took his badass "end justifies the means" approach; but he was absolutely loyal to Clark.

Wahhhhh!!! yeah, kings will come to the funeral, unless I, Lex Luthor, un-invite them. MWAHAHAH!
There are so many contrasts and similarities between the death of Jonathan and Lionel.
For example, Lionel died alone, murdered by his son, but Jonathan died in the arms of his wife and son.
But no Martha! Even though Lionel DIED!!! too bad
I'm gonna miss this guy on Smallville...

"When my father dies, kings will come to his funeral but when yours does, his friends will come.".
I remember, and sad that at the end no one came to lionel's funeral, lex's fault.
Clark is the one that really makes end so truly good in last episode "veritas" in the end scene lana and clark that was sad and good, just like this one and even better !
Lex is so bad evil and the way that they looked at each other it just felt so ... gaaah!!

Im sure Kings and other VIP's would have shown up had Lex opened the funeral and passed out the invites. prick.

Did anyone notice how Ghetto that graveyard was?! Overlooking a nice view of Skyscrapers? He didnt even have a Tombstone, buried right next to someone else. In the comics Lionel is buried in a Tomb with some dignity. The coffin he was buried in looked like something they bought at Costco. Luthorcorp couldnt spring for a nice one?
What a jerk. He kills his Dad, doesnt invite anyone to the funeral and buries him in some piece of crap John Doe box beside a pine tree.

Lex was right, better than a king came to Lionel's funeral....Clark came.

Yep, even in death, Lionel bested Lex. At least he had one person there who truly cared. I doubt Lex will. And Clark bested Lex as well. Again, Clark did the noble and right thing. He paid his respects, respectfully and honestly. Something Lex is unable to do. Lex, again, is reminded that he just can't measure up to the lowly farmboy.

I'm not entirely sure they would've. Lionel was once accused of murder and eventually had to rely on Lex for an income. Lionel's standing with kings and sultans may have no longer existed.

Yeah I remember that line and no one but Clark went since Lex didn't allow anyone. Clark felt like Lionel deserved better than that.

remember, lex closed off all people coming, which means he was the only one invited/in lex;s mind allowed to go.
thats why that final scene was so powerful, cos clark came even though he wasnt supposed to come.

And, in the comic/superhero world one might say Clark/Superman is the ultimate King on earth...In that reality 1 would be honored having SM at their funeral
