I've waited years to see that murder, and it was neat, but does anyone else feel it should have come at the end of the episode? Or at least had more build up? I just feel it was sort of: Okay you've waited for it, we might as well do it.

i rather they didn't show the death in the previews, would have made the show more dramatic

I was surprised it was in the beginning, but I'm not disapointed because all the aftermath was really really interesting and the death itself was neat. I thought it was very well written.

This should have happened years ago. They should have killed Lionel instead of trying to turn him into a good guy. Turning Lionel into a good guy means Jonathan died fighting for nothing, and I think we can all agree that Jonathan was a character we cared about a lot more than Lionel.

I liked the episode but two things bothered me.

--> They showed him get killed in the effing preview!
--> There was absolutely NO build up to it, being the first scene and all.

I didn't even realize until part way into the episode that this was a continuation off of "Traveler". Because of the gap between new episodes I didn't realize it was on the same night.

If this episode had been about Lionel's death, I would have been disappointed about the fact that he died in the first five minutes of the show. Sure, Lionel dying played a major part in tonight's episode, but "Descent" was all about Lex and his journey down to the dark side.

What was disappointing was all the hype about a major death, and then seeing Lionel die in the trailer. Of course, once again, because the episode wasn't specifically about his death, it makes sense why the network made that decision. Showing Lionel die in the trailer may have taken away from the shock value, but IMO did not make the event any less profound.

I wasn't let down but I see where you are coming from. The first thought I had as Remy Zero commanded someone to save them was thinking how well that scene would have worked at the end of an episode. Thankfully the rest of the episode worked for me.

That was disappointing, there was no way to avoid spoilers. They could have said "someone will die" instead of showing it. But the episode was still awesome. :D

I was only a little disappointed that Lionel died so early in the episode. I thought that the clip we saw be4 the episode when Lionel was dying that Clark would save him or something but he'd really die at the end.

No, not at all. This episode was great.

Anti-climatic and a horrid way for one of the best characters ( if not they best) of the series to leave.
Disappointment abounds.

Kudos

But as a side note, I also think that they should have built up to it a lot more than they did, even though Lex's final transformation was the focus of the episode

Well, the death scene was supposed to have been a cliffhanger at the end of Veritas,
when they thought that would be the Season Finale. So they just moved it to the beginning
of Descent, so it was basically the same day as Veritas.

I would have liked it to be more of a surprise/shock. WTH, with these way too spoilerish Trailers? The Quest isn't much of a mystery now is it!

I remember thinking, as the first scene of Smallville alighted onto my screen, that maybe I had missed something.

But then Remy Zero kicked in and I was proven wrong, thankfully.

Considering how the rest of the episode panned out, and having watched the last few episodes immediately before, it makes sense to have Lionel's death where it is - if it came last, nothing else would have made sense.

I think that was the point.

Through Lex's eyes, Lionel's worthless, something to be casually discarded. So he did. A thankless, heartless, meaningless death to the (&$)*($^*$^*(^*($* who tortured me for my entire life.
