I can't remember an episode being this dark in all the time i've been watching Smallville and i don't just mean the lighting.
I liked it alot, some really powerful scenes, superb acting from Michael almost all the way through, this was dark pretty much from start to finnish, particularly with Gena's execution (Lex will be kicking himself for that!).

Perhaps the darkest episode in the series, and I would probably put either "Crisis" or "Tomb" in that list as well, imo.

Based on what I have seen and heard, I think it could be. Lex is embracing his dark side and eliminating his good side or what was left if it and of course what he does to Lionel. Can't wait to see it.

Hell yea it was dark, and crazy too. Good acting from MR as always too, he's good at acting delusional hahaha. Lex seeing young Lex in front of him, that liddo kid annoys the hell out of him man. And damn Lex dragged young Lex into the fireplace, how brutal!!

Tomb was pretty dark, and Viod had its moments aswell with the drug addict girl coughing up blood and dying infront of Chloe, but i think overall, for the consistency of darkness and adult tone this tops the dark chart of Smallville epsiodes.
Alexander III : Crazy Lex is good, very good.
A note, i has occured to me through other threads that Lex might have not killed Gena, but at the moment i'm in the dark about it, haha.

I don't like it already, it's not about Clark, too much about Lex, and way too dark.

Remember that worse and dark mean two different things here, Clana = Worse, usually.

Not the darkest, I still think Shattered and moreso Asylum were a lot darker. This was the darkest, and best in awhile though. Oddly enough, in those episodes we saw the friendship between Clark and Lex at its best hour. In Descent, we see the true ending to it and the start to the war.

I never though Asylum was super dark.

its one terrible thing to have someone murdered as people did in previous episodes.
its another thing to murderer your own father with your bare hands.
I find it very dark and the darkest episode of the series.

Absolutely.
that was very dark, lex has gone evil. the good left in him has gone and he has killed his own father.

Yeah you can't get darker than that! An excellent episode highlighted by even better acting! MR certainly has solidified into the true Lex that will be Superman greatest nemesis. Man what a great episode. I thought that TPTB were just luring us into believeing that Lionel would die. I guess I just didn't want to believe it to be true. I was still in denial when it happened too, lol.

it was an amazing episode and yes it was very dark but it was also very much needed for it to be that way. i mean i wouldnt want a light hearted episode of lex going evil. we've had too many of those. This truly marks the point where there is no going back for lex.

Lex has gone over to the evil side. How dark can you get.

Yes. There was no happy scene whatsoever.
Lex is officially the most evil guy ever. murdering his father and his 'good' side 4eva. creepy

one of the darkest, maybe the darkest. others are fracture, labyrinth, reckoning, and promise.

To have to identify a body that just fell from 47 floors up would be intense!!! There (in real life) wouldn't be too much left to identify

I think it was the darkest ep so far because we've never seen Lex look so blasted as he did after he viewed/ID'd Lionel's body. That dead eye was rough to see, and the way the special effects had everything blur into monochromatic 'otherness' - when Lex exists only inside himself with the fact of what he'd done - this shows him outside of the rest of humanity.
Totally fab acting on MR's part. Loved the face-off over Lionel's grave at the end. I can't wait to see Clark defend himself against interloper!Lex at the frozen Fortress.

Very dark, but I think Shattered was dark, too.
it was dark but lex wasn't evil just crazy, descent has proved that lex has no good in him anymore. rip Alexander

YA, it was creepy just how dark it was. It was evil. I mean Lex killed his own father, then his good self...

Also don't forget the ending of Covenant. That was extremely dark. Not even Clark was able to escape.

Splinter from season 5 was darker. And also the best acting from Tom.
But i agree this one was one of the darker episodes in a loong time, hope to see more like this in the future:)

the darkest with the exception of reckoning...the subtle death of johnathan kent was artistic and poignant...it was useless and real ..the clearest example of reality within the series...a man dies of a heart attack..it was great and his death is very much paralleled in LIonel's ......johnathan kent died under the stress of clark, clark didn't kill him, his secret did....and lionel too died for clark.. lionel had a hand in JK's death at the end...and ultimately JK had a hand in Lionel's because lex had within his mind a picture of what a father should be and that didn't mesh with what Lionel was... so he died for it...these are psychological the cinematographical parallels are obvious...with the funeral..there is also some inversion..JK dies at the end...Lionel dies at the beginning...which was nuts

First of all, Hi everybody ;) ... I'm new here. :)
And The Darkest Episode was ""3x22 Covenant"" without any doubt.
The Great MB punished those Who betrayed him at the Court IN THE HARSHEST WAY !!
((Chloe & Her dad & Lex... all were gone.))
On the other hand, Jor-El took care of The Kents... Jonathan went into a coma... Clark disappeared.
Descent not even close to Covenant.

By far. Just look at the story matter, not to mention the lighting. It seems like EVERY scene's lighting was dominantly dark, or even black. At the start of the episode, the final Lionel/Lex confrontation, where the LuthorCorp office is using metallic silver and blue, almost everything was black.
People complain about how dark the last three seasons have been, and claiming that trend began in Season 4, and I agree that it wouldn't hurt to see smiles once in a while from the main characters. But I give exception to this episode. It needed to be as dark as it was.

The only thing worse than Lex killing Lionel... The continuation of Clana.

its the darkest cause almost the entire episode takes place at night.
but really, I don't recall seeing an episode darker than Descent. Not just anybody, but a major character who's been with the show since the start killed by another major character. Plus all the events surrounding it.

Splinter anyone? Clark going hallucinating on silver-K and almost choking the life out of Lana. Not the darkEST but it was a nasty episode.

The end of shattered will always stick in my head as the darkest scene ever... and then moving on into Asylum with the electro shock therapy... my mum actually made me fast forward through that scene

I would describe covenant as... magnificant, and bastardful, it has its dark moments but i really don't think its the same kind of darkness. IMO covenant was too epic to be really dark.
Splinter had a couple of moments but the beginning of the episode starts off quite normal and the end is a little more upbeat. Perhaps splinter has the most dark moments, it certainly had the wtf,omg moments.
Tomb was dark, it was very dark particularly with Chloe's theme of possible insanity, but overall it wasn't dark from start to finnish.
Descent had 1 light, moral of the day, scene, and EVERYTHING else was dark.

Of course,it was supposed to be the darkest...It was Lex falling into the dark side forever. He embraced his evil side completly. He killed his father and decided to not listened his good conscience(Alexander) nomore,he killed his assistante because she became too nosy, firing Chloe because she wanted to get on his way and the argument he had with Clark at his mansion.Yes,the true villain of the story has finally arrived ;)
All about Clark

There's been quite a few dark episodes. I think this one was designed to be the darkest, but I think at least 1/4 of all the episodes are dark. Especially Season 3.

the darkest ones yet would be descent. dang you lex. i think the only other good episodes showing the bad bad lex we know and love are hourglass (season one, the vision), scare (season four... vision/worst fear) and onyx (season 4, black kryptonite)
i agree though with most of you, Covenant was a dark episode.
