View Full Version : Lois was my favorite part!

I loved the Lois scenes where she was snooping and investigating, especially when she was dressed like a plant caretaker with Jimmy, lol.
My second favorite part was Lex, and how he's tracking down the mystery of Veritas.
I also liked Clark, but poor Clark is stuck in a boring story with Lana. Even the Braniac story was boring to me because it was all about what he did to Lana, and how Clark is now hurt and sad yet again over Lana. Yawn.

Lois and Jimmy are almost as Cannon as Lois and Clark - while it was good to see them together, I thought more attention should have been put on Clark/Brainiac/Lex
I prefer Chloe and Lois scenes as well. Jimmy just annoys me now after that whole Kara eye fock when he was with Chloe. So I don't like him...in fact I hate him.

Lois saves the day yet again. Jimmy was awesome, too. I love that this was classic iconic Lois Lane at her best. Snooping, investigating and getting herself and Jimmy into trouble. Gotta love her.
Clark seemed like a bystander in this entire episode, he wouldn't even try flying. Kara was kind of yawn, and so was Brainiac, but I guess it is because he had to be so cryptic and whatnot. Chloe was kind of OC for me, the way she wouldn't even believe Lionel. Lex was kinda meh, it seemed to me he was primarily there for a voice over retcon. Lionel was awesome, but waaaaaay OC. It was weird to see him so distraught and weak.

With 5 episodes left and ED being under contract for 4 more episodes, perhaps Descent, which apparently has parts from Veritas reedits, we may have ED parts of Veritas show up in Descent and the final four episodes following that, making her present in all remaining episodes.

Me too! I'm glad you said that, because I was hoping he'd notice also.
Yes, the best parts for me were the Lois Lane parts. She was awesome in this episode. Loved "Big Cool Headline Here". Loved the part where she was undercover with Jimmy (tending to a plant!) and barges in to confront Lionel. And, then, follows him to see where's he's going next... and her hunch works because he goes straight to Lana & leaves incriminating evidence against Lex.
I was waiting to just see him acknowledge Lois had written the article on the front page. :o
I don't think she wrote the article. It doesn't fit with the timeline of the episode. Why would she write the article linking Lionel to Swann's death, when she's clearly aware that it's Lex who is the real suspect? Also, she wouldn't have time to write the article, submit it, get published and still go about her business investigating and following Lionel.
The way I saw it, the e-mail about the "update" regarding the body in the river was a mass e-mail sent to everyone. Lois clicked on it and saw a potential story. It was probably evident to a lot of reporters (through records, contacts, etc.) that Lionel was the obvious link to Swann's murder because he met with her before her death & there were the phone records. There were probably a lot of reporters willing to write a generic story about this and Lex would be more than happy to publish anything that linked Lionel to Swann's death, because - in reality - he killed Swann.
Lois didn't just jump the gun and write a story about the link and point fingers at Lionel in a generic article. Instead, she chose to take the investigation a few steps further. She decided to ambush Lionel and try to get a quote from him (while also seeing, first hand, his reaction to the detail of the locket). She used her ambush to send him running and then followed him to see what he would do next. And, now, she knows that she needs to keep tracking the story to Lex Luthor. She's not done with the story, yet, so why would she publish anything?
The thing that distinguishes Lois Lane from other reporters (not just this Lois - any canon Lois) is that she doesn't just see a story and write a generic article about the facts at hand. She takes those same leads given to other reporters and tries to find another angle. She runs with and keeps digging until she gets to the bottom of the story in a way that no other reporter would try to do. It's this attitude and determination (with a healthy dose of not being afraid to get her hands dirty or make a fool out of herself for a story) is what will make such a great reporter in the future. That's what makes her legendary.
Needless to say, I loved Lois in this episode and I'm looking forward to seeing where she goes with all this.

I was actually wondering if she wrote it. You may be right. I was relating it to Lois and Clark, The New Adventures of Superman. Lois would get really ticked if anyone stole her headline or her story. And I had thought she was looking at the coroner's access site, or something similiar when she found the info. I didn't realize it was a community email, was it?
I thought maybe she wrote the initial headline, and then went after a follow up story.
It's just a thought. But either way could be correct. They didn't really tell us.
WickedJenn

If what tariksam said is right and the article only reported on Patricia's death itself and no mention of Lionel, then there would be a follow up article on WHO did it, I'd assume. So this was just a precursor, so I'd think it be plausible that she DID write it, especially since we saw the layout screen in the beginning of the episode.
Lois could obviously only report on the fact that Patricia's death was suspicious at this point, which if we're remembering the headline correctly, it would be correct.

I found the scene on youtube.
Everyone's right - it says, "Prominent Metropolis Citizen Dies a Suspicious Death". No mention of Lionel.
This scene takes place between Lois confronting Lionel & Lionel going to Lana's house. (Clark immediately speeds to the Isis foundation after seeing this article.)
The beginning scene with Lois and Jimmy goes like this:
When she was talking to Jimmy, she hears that she got an e-mail and pulls it up. She checks the e-mail she just got and clicks on it. And what pops us is the shot of Swann's dead body, which is a copy of the coroner report.
Lois: OK, better make sure that camera is loaded with ammo, because I've got tomorrow's headline. "Daughter of Nobel Winning Astronomer Murdered".
Jimmy: What? That Swann woman they fished out the lake last night?
Lois: Yeah.
Jimmy: I thought that she drowned.
Lois: More like sank. Kind of hard to swim after you've been shot.
So, this is how I see it:
- Swann's body is fished out of the lake the previous night. The Planet's headline that morning says, "Prominent Metropolis Citizen Dies a Suspicious Death", because - at this stage - the coroner has not determined cause of death. We don't know who wrote this article.
- That same morning, Lois is looking for a story to write and she gets an e-mail with an update on Swann's death... it's a copy of the cornoner report and it's now been determined that cause of death was a bullet. We don't know who sent Lois this e-mail. I can assume one of two things: Lois had been investigating the death herself and was waiting for an e-mail with the results of the autoposy, or everyone recieved an update - not just her. The reason is because Lois was not surprised at all to see an update on this story. So, either it's par for the course that reporters will get an update from the coroner on this sort of story, or she has been waiting for an update from someone.
- Then, she decides to investigate Lionel and we know the rest. It ends with her thinking it's Lex who hired the driver.
Bottom line, though: As much as I wish it, I don't think she wrote that article. But I do think that she was smart enough to realize that there was more to the story.

Ok that makes sense, and I agree, it DID seem like she was not surprised to get an update, and knowing her, she probably thought the death was suspicious to begin with, even before that update.
I thought maybe she wrote the initial headline, and then went after a follow up story.
It's just a thought. But either way could be correct. They didn't really tell us.
I guess we can infer that she wrote the original article and was sent the coroner report as kind of a "follow up" to her original story. (She made a contact at the coroner's office and asked them give her head's up if something out of the ordinary happened.)
But, honestly, I don't think so. It would take a lot of fanwanking on my part to make it that way. I think she may have thought that something was odd about Swann's body being fished out of the lake and may have been waiting for an update about it. But, honestly, it looked like she was pretty much waiting to get a lead on something at the start of the episode. I think that if she had just published that article, she'd be on the phone with coroner's office saying, "Yeah, I'm calling to follow up... what's going on with this? Nobel winning astromer's daughters don't get fished out of lakes everyday! How'd she die??"
Instead we got, "Big Cool Headline Here" and her telling Jimmy that she likes to work backward... meaning, she had no subject for her headline, yet. That's not say that she probably didn't read the article. More than likely, she knew that something weird was going on and would be more ready to work on that story - once she knew there was something tangible to go on.
I err on the side that she was not sent the e-mail especially from some anonymous source. I think that it was open records and she got an update, along with everyone else. She just chose to do something about it. (Who knows, maybe other reporters did, too, but she chose to go after Lionel and ended up connecting it to Lex.) I have no doubt that the next day's headline is going to read exactly how Lois said it would. The question is: Will Lois write it? Probably not, given that she's still researching it and has just connected it to Lex. For Lois, the story isn't done, yet. Any other reporter would just write a general story on how she was murdered and the driver is the suspect and missing. She's going to go all out and get to the bottom of it.

There's no byline so anything is possible. Maybe they don't want us to know for sure. So many times with SV they want us to believe what we want to believe. But she's clearly competing for, and writing headlines at this point. This would lead me to believe she was waiting for the coroner report from a source, possibly.

No byline. They don't want us to know for sure that Lois wrote it, or someone else wrote it. lol
My first impression was she didn't do it since she is still on the case looking for her big cool headline. I went back and rewatched that part(with a pause button) then i was even more sure she didn't because of no name on the paper(you would assume clark would have made reference to it if she did).

I agree. This show always has the worst newspaper articles. I remember in "Tempest" there was a headline that spelled "Cited" as "Sited." Stupid prop department.

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but I DID work on a paper at college, and I was a copy editor, so I aaaaaaalways notice stuff like that, they just jump out at me.
Anyhow, sorry to stray from the topic, but I couldn't resist :D

Maybe the byline is at the bottom? Like this... "- Lois Lane, DP staff reporter".
Personally, I think that the props department got lazy.
I think that people can interpret it any way they want, obviously. But, even as a huge Lois Lane fan, I don't think she wrote the article. I do think that the props department (and director) would have been sure to show that it was written by Lois Lane, if it was. If nothing else, they'd use it later in promotional stuff, like they've used her Green Arrow story and the barn door story from "The Inquisitor". Plus, I think that Clark would mention that it was Lois's article. And that Chloe would have a moment of "what the hell?" if she saw that Lois wrote an article about a subject she didn't even know about.
We know that both Jimmy and Lois knew about it (and had probably read the article) but there wasn't a mention by either of them that Lois wrote the original article.
So, really, I don't think she did. Nor do I think she's going to write a follow up about the bullet until she figures out the whole story. For her, there isn't anything worth writing about, yet. At least that's the way I see Lois. To me, what makes Lois different from a random reporter is that she's not going to just report that people now know that Swann was shot before she was dumped into the lake. Lois Lane will report who shot her, when they shot her, why they shot her, and what's being done about the killer and what's going to happen next. To her, this is just the tip of the iceberg and she's not going to talk about the tip when she can write about the whole iceberg. :)

Or what about the headline when Lionel was out of jail in Season 4? I don't remember it exactly, but they said he was found "innocent" when, in reality, the charges were dropped.

So did anyone realize right away that it was Lois bending down and trimming the plants when Lionel was walking to his office? I sure didn't, I only got it when they showed Jimmy hiding behind the plant. I think they did an excellent job with that.
I wasn't expecting them to be undercover like that, it was great. :)

Yeah, I didn't get it, at first. I mean, I did think it was odd that they were showing the worker, but I thought the girl was going to attack Lionel. Then the zoom in on Jimmy and, two seconds later, Lois pops up onscreen with the hat! I squealed! I loved it... and thought that ED looked gorgeous.

You know, it's kind of cool that you can actually read the "Prominent Metropolis Citizen Dies a Suspicious Death" article. Someone actually took the time to create a full backstory for Patricia Swann...
Apparently, she graduated from MetU with a Master's in Cultural Anthropology, and a Minor in Physical Anthropology. She started the Swann Foundation, which takes a holistic approach to stemming drug addiction, and founded several awards programs. Patricia also spent three years working in Relief Programs in South Africa, recieved numerous awards for her humanitarian work, and traveled extensively.
Usually they just repeat the same information and make it look like an article, or put it just enough out of focus that they aren't obligated to write anything of meaning.
It's fun to see that they put some thought into it when it wasn't meant to have an impact on the plot of the story. It's very detailed of them...even if they did neglect to print a byline.

Yeah, of course, you are. Everyone has a different reaction to the different parts of the show.
But, if you go to a thread that clearly supposed to be about people talking about how Lois was their favorite part of the show and then say that you thought it was boring, you're going to get weird looks. That would be like me going into a "Lana is great" thread and saying that I think she's completely useless to the plot and I fast forward through all her scenes. It's true - I do feel this way and I'm entitled to. But no one's gonna be happy that I posted it. :)

To add more to the side that she didn't write the article, When she saw the picture of Patracia dead, she quickly told Jimmy, ok you better make sure that camera's loaded with anmo because i got tommorow's headline "Daughter of Nobel Winning Astronomer Murdered."
I never picked this up the first 10 times I watched because i was to busy looking at her boobs, but i think it was on purpose they made her come up with the headline right away when seeing one picture of Patrica dead(with the "Big Cool Headline" on the Screen). Going into the mind of Lois, i guess she realizes that the Title of the Article is what sells the paper, she just want to find that title, then will go out to find evidence to prove in her article.
The Headline on the paper is not the one she came up with and i assume Lois will come up with an article exactly titled "Daughter of Nobel Winning Astronomer Murdered."

Yawn.
